Chimney Swift Habitat: Why Large Hollow Trees Could Matter Again

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chimney swifts may rely more heavily on large, hollow trees as suitable chimneys disappear, but no evidence shows that the species is already making a broad return to forests or that tree cavities can replace chimneys at population scale. The strongest conclusion is narrower: hollow trees were probably important before European settlement, chimneys became a major substitute after logging reduced mature forest habitat, and protecting the remaining trees and chimneys is increasingly urgent.

That history comes from Environment and Climate Change Canada’s 2023 recovery strategy. The physical requirements are demanding: a usable site needs a vertical cavity with rough, stable interior surfaces for clinging and nest attachment. Traditional chimneys generally have openings larger than 28.5 centimetres, while large hollow trees used by swifts are generally more than 50 centimetres in diameter at breast height (DBH). Whether enough such trees remain to offset chimney losses is unknown.

Why chimney swifts may need trees again

Chimney swifts are aerial insectivores: they catch flying insects while in flight and use enclosed vertical spaces for nesting and roosting. Before European settlement, the species likely used large hollow trees for much of this shelter. Large-scale logging beginning in the early nineteenth century reduced the supply of mature trees with suitable cavities. Masonry chimneys then provided a new, abundant-looking substitute in settled areas, and swifts adapted to them.

The adaptation worked because a chimney can reproduce several features of a tree cavity: a tall, enclosed shaft, a rough surface that allows the bird to cling, and a protected place for a nest. Canada’s recovery strategy says chimney swifts are now primarily associated with urban and suburban chimneys, although an unknown portion of the population remains associated with mature forests. The historical sequence is plausible and documented as an inference; it is not proof that modern swifts will automatically switch back to trees when chimneys vanish.

What makes a cavity usable?

A hollow space is not automatically swift habitat. The interior must be vertical, stable and rough enough for a bird to cling to it and attach a nest. The opening, depth, condition and surrounding habitat all affect whether a site can function as a nesting or roosting place.

Habitat option Evidence-based physical guidance Questions that determine usefulness
Traditional masonry chimney Openings are generally greater than 28.5 cm; an open top and adequate height matter. These chimneys are most commonly used in urban and suburban settings. Is the top open, or has it been capped? Is the interior rough and stable? Is the structure safe and maintained? Are swifts already using it?
Large hollow tree Trees used by swifts are generally more than 50 cm DBH. The cavity needs a vertical, rough interior and must remain stable. Is the tree mature and structurally sound? Does the cavity provide enough vertical space? Is mature forest nearby, and can the tree be retained?
Purpose-built swift tower A hollow artificial structure designed to provide an alternative nesting or roosting site. Is the design appropriate, is it sited where swifts occur, and will it receive ongoing maintenance? Conservation results are not guaranteed.

These dimensions are general guidance, not a pass–fail test. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service notes that swifts sometimes use exceptions, so a site should not be dismissed solely because it differs from a typical measurement. Conversely, meeting a dimension does not prove that birds will occupy it.

Why suitable chimneys are disappearing

Modern buildings rarely provide the same opportunities as older masonry structures. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says suitable swift chimneys have not been built since before the 1960s. Existing chimneys can become unavailable when owners add caps, renovate interiors, demolish buildings or allow structures to deteriorate. Changes in heating systems also reduce the number of large, open chimneys.

Loss of chimneys is therefore a continuing habitat problem, not a one-time historical event. A chimney that remains physically present may still be unusable if its opening is blocked, its interior is altered or the structure is unsafe. Because swifts can use a network of sites across a landscape, the loss of several older chimneys may matter even when some alternatives remain.

Chimney loss is only one threat

Federal conservation sources identify several pressures on chimney swifts. Flying-insect prey has declined in many landscapes, and pesticide use can reduce insect abundance. Habitat degradation, collisions and climate-related or severe-weather effects add risk. The Canadian assessment links much of the documented population reduction to habitat loss and reduced insect abundance associated with pesticide use.

This broader picture matters when interpreting a possible shift to trees. Even if suitable cavities were available, fewer insects could limit the food needed to raise young and survive migration. Protecting a chimney or tree is valuable, but it cannot by itself resolve every cause of decline.

Can hollow trees replace lost chimneys?

No population-scale replacement has been demonstrated. COSEWIC’s Canadian assessment explicitly says it is unknown whether currently available trees can compensate for continuing chimney loss. Mature trees with large, stable cavities are unevenly distributed, and many forests no longer contain the age structure that produced them.

Young trees cannot quickly solve the problem. Canada’s recovery strategy cautions that forestry rotations may be too short for trees to grow large enough to develop usable cavities. Planting a sapling today may support future habitat, but it is not an immediate substitute for an occupied chimney or an old hollow tree.

Ontario recovery guidance adds an important population distinction: human-altered habitat may be sufficient to maintain the species at its current level, but probably not to restore the higher historical level that existed before decline was detected in the 1970s. That statement does not establish a continent-wide threshold, and it should not be read as proof that any particular town or forest has enough sites.

What the Canadian population figure actually means

COSEWIC’s 2018 assessment estimated a 49% reduction over three generations, or 14 years, in Canada, with the reduction occurring largely outside towns and cities. The estimate has both geographic and temporal boundaries. It is not a current North American total, and it should not be presented as a direct measure of every urban population.

Canadian status material also discusses a much larger long-term decline since 1970 in areas outside towns and cities, but that figure requires the underlying assessment’s exact scope and wording before it can be used as a general statistic. The 49% estimate is the clearer, bounded figure.

How to assess a chimney without disturbing swifts

Owners of older buildings can check whether a chimney might provide habitat, but safety comes first. Do not enter an unstable structure, block an opening or dismantle a chimney to inspect it.

  1. Check the exterior. Look for a traditional, vertical chimney with an open top. A cap, screen or recent alteration may prevent access.
  2. Consider the opening. An opening generally greater than 28.5 cm is the U.S. and Canadian guidance point, but unusual sites can still be used.
  3. Consider the interior surface. Rough, stable masonry is more suitable for clinging and nest attachment than a smooth or damaged shaft.
  4. Watch from a distance. Swifts entering repeatedly at dusk or circling before dropping into a chimney may indicate a roost or nest site. Avoid shining lights into the shaft or approaching during active use.
  5. Get qualified advice before work. If repairs, capping or demolition are planned, contact a local wildlife authority or experienced chimney professional first. Schedule work to avoid disturbing an active site where regulations require it.

A chimney’s potential is also a landscape question. Nearby roosts, nesting sites and insect-rich habitat can make a usable structure more valuable than an isolated cavity.

How to protect large hollow trees

Retaining mature trees is the most direct way to preserve the option of tree-based habitat. Where safety permits, land managers should keep large trees with cavities and known nesting or roosting sites. They should avoid cutting, heavy pruning or other disturbance around active sites and maintain surrounding mature forest.

Tree retention requires professional risk assessment. A hazardous tree may need action, but removing a cavity solely because it looks old or hollow can eliminate scarce habitat. If a tree must be managed, an arborist and wildlife specialist can determine whether part of the structure can safely remain and whether seasonal timing can reduce disturbance.

Where a swift tower fits

A chimney swift tower is a purpose-built hollow structure intended to offer an alternative nesting or roosting site. It can be useful where older chimneys are scarce and swifts are present, but it is a targeted stewardship measure rather than proof that artificial structures can replace lost habitat everywhere.

Planning should address tower design, rough interior surfaces, height, placement, local swift activity and long-term maintenance. A tower placed without suitable surrounding habitat or without a local population may remain unused. Canada’s recovery material cautions that stewardship methods are not guaranteed to achieve population or distribution objectives.

What residents and land managers can do now

  • Keep suitable, safe mature trees and avoid removing cavity-bearing trees unnecessarily.
  • Record known swift nesting and roosting sites so repairs or construction do not erase them accidentally.
  • Before capping, renovating or demolishing an older chimney, obtain wildlife advice and check applicable local rules.
  • Reduce pesticide use where practical and protect areas that support abundant flying insects.
  • Use purpose-built towers only as part of a site-specific conservation plan, not as a guaranteed replacement.
  • Report observations to regional monitoring programs so changes in urban and forest use can be tracked.

The most defensible outlook

Chimney swifts may use more large hollow trees as human-made cavities become less available, and the species’ pre-settlement history makes that ecological response credible. But the available evidence does not show a broad return to trees, quantify how many birds now depend on them, or establish that enough cavities exist to replace chimneys. Conservation therefore has two immediate goals: keep suitable chimneys accessible where they remain safe, and retain the mature trees that could provide habitat now or in the future.

Those actions should be paired with work on insect prey, habitat quality and other threats. Treating chimney loss as the sole cause would misrepresent the evidence; treating tree cavities as an assured substitute would do the same.
