Spoilers for “In the Rubble” follow. “In the Rubble,” which aired March 26, 2025, gives Dermot Mulroney a powerful showcase as Dom Pascal tries to return to work after his wife Monica’s death. Calling it his best episode is a matter of opinion, not an established series-wide ranking; what makes this one stand out is how grief unsettles Pascal’s judgment and forces the firehouse to decide how to care for its chief without ignoring the risks of his behavior.

What happens in “In the Rubble”

In Season 13, Episode 16, Pascal returns to the firehouse and asks the crew to treat him as usual. But a workplace rescue draws him beyond his supervisory role and into danger. His effort to find answers about the crash that killed Monica grows increasingly personal: he brings firefighters back to the scene and presses them to reconsider their response, even as the episode presents evidence that points away from the other driver being impaired or culpable.

Severide recognizes that Pascal may cross another line and confronts him. The problem is not simply that Pascal is grieving; he is a leader whose choices affect the safety and judgment of the people working under him. The crew’s concern therefore has two sides: compassion for a bereaved colleague and a duty to hold a chief to professional boundaries.

Why Mulroney’s performance makes the episode hit

Mulroney plays Pascal’s grief as something that compromises his ability to separate the search for answers from the need to act. That tension gives the episode its dramatic engine: Pascal is not portrayed as a stranger to the crew, but as their chief and a person in pain. The role asks Mulroney to make both truths visible at once.

#1 Best Overall

In a March 24, 2025 interview with TV Insider, Mulroney said Pascal “winds up making some bad decisions even and needs to kind of be reined in by his crew.” He also described the story as “an amazing depiction of traumatic grief at the workplace.” The episode gives that description shape through the crew’s difficult position: they can support Pascal without endorsing his choices.

The firehouse’s response is the emotional payoff

The episode’s resolution shifts the focus from Pascal’s pursuit of accountability to the people who refuse to leave him isolated. Pascal describes Monica’s funeral as family-only, yet the firehouse leaders and crew attend. Their presence turns the show’s found-family theme into an action rather than a slogan: they offer care while still having confronted the danger in Pascal’s conduct.

That ending is affecting because it does not erase the earlier conflict. The crew has not solved Pascal’s grief or proved his suspicions right; it has made clear that concern and accountability can coexist with solidarity.

How Violet and Damon’s stories balance the hour

Violet’s letter to Carver

Violet struggles to write a letter to Carver, and her own history with grief informs the scene. Tell-Tale TV reviewer Ashley Bissette Sumerel finds the voiceover less effective than Violet’s actions. The thread offers a quieter parallel to Pascal’s loss, though it does not carry the same dramatic weight as his command crisis.

Damon’s return to the floater pool

Damon returns to the floater pool hoping for a permanent place at Firehouse 51. He is approved for a spot on Truck while Kylie is unavailable. A kiss initiated by Novak adds a possible romantic complication at the same firehouse, giving the episode a lighter, forward-looking counterpoint to Pascal’s grief.

Is this Dermot Mulroney’s best episode?

“Best” is a defensible personal verdict if the measure is emotional force: Pascal’s grief, authority, and vulnerability collide in a way that gives Mulroney substantial material. But the available critical record does not establish a definitive ranking of his episodes. Rotten Tomatoes displays four critic reviews for “In the Rubble,” including Ashley Bissette Sumerel’s 3.5/5, Brittany Frederick’s 8/10 for CBR, and Carissa Pavlica’s 4.75/5 for TV Fanatic. Those are individual assessments, not a consensus ranking of Mulroney’s work.

Sumerel calls it “a strong, emotional episode” and highlights the show’s found-family theme. The episode’s success also depends on its ensemble: the crew’s response supplies the emotional resolution, while Violet and Damon keep the hour from becoming a single-character showcase.
