What Roan said about Trump
On September 24, 2024, Roan posted a TikTok clarification after an interview with The Guardian prompted criticism. In that first clarification, she said she was not voting for Trump and urged people to question those in power, themselves and the information their social-media algorithms show them. TheWrap quoted her saying it was important to ask whether a claim someone posted was even true. (TheWrap, September 24, 2024; The Guardian, September 25, 2024)
That statement was about not voting for Trump. It was not a statement that she would abstain from voting altogether.
Why her earlier interview drew criticism
The controversy began with a Guardian interview published before Roan’s first TikTok clarification. Roan said she had many concerns about government and did not feel pressured to endorse a candidate. She also urged people to think critically, use their vote and pay attention to local elections.

A brief excerpt in which she referred to “problems on both sides” circulated online. Some readers took it as political neutrality or false equivalence. The Guardian reported that Roan objected to her comments being taken out of context. Reading the excerpt alongside her broader remarks matters: she was discussing why she would not endorse a candidate, while still encouraging people to vote.
What she said about Harris—and why she would not endorse her
In a follow-up video reported the next day, Roan made her voting intention explicit: she said she would vote for Kamala Harris, but would not endorse her. The Hill quoted Roan saying, “So, yeah, I’m voting for f—ing Kamala,” and The Guardian and TheWrap also reported the distinction between voting for Harris and endorsing her. Roan explained that she did not want to put her “entire name” and “entire project” behind one candidate because she disagreed with policies on both sides. She named trans rights and the Israel-Gaza war among the issues shaping her view. These are Roan’s descriptions of her reasons and of the policy disagreements; they should not be mistaken for an independent assessment of either candidate’s positions.
On trans rights, The Guardian quoted her saying, “They cannot have cis people making decisions for trans people, period.” The quote reflects her stated concern about who makes decisions affecting trans people.

“Not endorsing” described Roan’s refusal to publicly put her name and artistic project behind a candidate. It did not mean she was refusing to vote. The comments concerned the 2024 U.S. election and should be read as statements made at that time, not as a current voting position.
