Gupta’s physical sketches and Raina’s conceptual stand-up offered two very different routes to the same result: they became the season’s co-winners.
What was Comicstaan 2?
Comicstaan 2 was an Amazon Prime Video stand-up competition series. Scroll’s 2019 account describes ten contestants, seven mentors and a new challenge in each of seven episodes. Challenges ranged from observational and anecdotal humor to sketch comedy, improv and topical humor. The official Prime Video listing names Gupta and Raina among the contestants; catalog availability can vary by location.
Gupta and Raina ultimately shared the title. The Indian Express reported that each received a trophy and Rs 10 lakh in prize money.
Aakash Gupta’s standout sketches
The renaming act
One of Gupta’s strongest moments, according to Scroll, came in the fourth episode: a sketch satirizing the Uttar Pradesh government’s renaming spree. Gupta said he wrote it from scratch in exactly four days and found the ending the night before the performance, too late to work it fully into the act. “I wrote the renaming act from scratch in exactly four days and found the ending for it on the night before the final performance,” he recalled.

The tailor sketch
In the fifth episode, Gupta played a tailor whose regular female customer is discovered cheating on him with a rival tailor. He described the act as something shaped through repeated rehearsal, not simply a sequence of finished written jokes: “A sketch has to be rehearsed again and again, from which the writing will develop.”
The cooking-show host
Gupta also exaggerated the mannerisms of a host standing beside a chef and reacting dramatically to dishes. Scroll reported that hosts Abish Mathew and Urooj Ashfaq picked up the impersonation and repeated it during the season. Judge Kenny Sebastian regularly showed affection for Gupta’s acts; Gupta said hearing Sebastian express love for them made him blush.

Samay Raina’s future-comedian routine
Raina’s memorable alternative-comedy bit came in the episode before the finale. He played a future version of himself, a comedian jailed for offending an audience member. Asked about the idea behind the premise, he answered: “It’s simple – it came from my name.” The routine showed a different side of a performer Scroll characterized as more traditionally mic-in-hand in his stand-up delivery.
How they handled the pressure
Gupta’s slideshow improv
In the sixth round, “Comedy of Terrors,” contestants had to improvise jokes from slideshow prompts. Gupta said rehearsals went badly. He then worked with mentor Biswa Kalyan Rath for three or four hours and surprised himself with the performance.

Raina’s rankings dip
Raina’s pressure came after a sharp drop in the rankings, following consecutive first-place standings in episodes two and three. The contrast was less about one performer being better than the other than about where each found difficulty: Gupta had to find his footing in a live improvisation challenge, while Raina felt the effect of a change in standing.
Early encouragement
Raina recalled a validating moment when judge and mentor Zakir Khan responded to his early act: “I have only word for you: I am a fan”. Raina said, “I slept early that day.”

Two different ways of performing comedy
Scroll’s feature presents Gupta and Raina as contrasting performers. Raina favored a conventional stand-up setup with a microphone; Gupta drew on theatre and improv, building comedy through physicality, sketches and act-outs. “Some people like telling jokes. I like to act them out,” Gupta said. Raina identified discovering open mics in college as a turning point.
In a separate post-finale Indian Express interview, Raina said he had planned to save his strongest act for the finale and considered Gupta tough competition. He also said he learned from Gupta’s use of his whole body on stage, his act-outs and voice modulation. Gupta, in his own post-finale interview, described his challenge as: “To maintain the quality and not disappoint myself.” He saw the competition as a chance to show skills beyond conventional stand-up, including sketch work and improv.
