Castr YouTube Stream Latency Settings for a 24/7 Channel

Normal latency is the sensible starting point for a non-interactive 24/7 YouTube stream. Here’s how YouTube’s modes differ from Castr’s player settings and what to check when playback buffers.

For a mostly one-way, continuously running YouTube channel, start with Normal latency in YouTube Studio. It gives viewers the most buffering headroom, supports all resolutions and live features, and is the best fit when immediate chat interaction is not the priority. Choose Low or Ultra-low only when shorter conversational delay matters more than the increased risk of buffering; neither supports 4K. YouTube’s latency guidance describes the trade-offs.

Which latency setting should a 24/7 channel use?

For a continuous documentary, music, ambience or other non-interactive feed, use Normal. A 24/7 channel can have live chat, but if viewers are primarily watching rather than responding in real time, shorter delay usually adds little while reducing the buffer available to absorb network or playback problems.

YouTube describes Normal as best for non-interactive streams: it offers the highest viewer quality because it has the least buffering, and supports all resolutions and live features. Its help page does not give Normal a numeric latency target.

Latency is the delay between the event being encoded and a viewer seeing it. The setting affects how much video can be buffered ahead of playback. A smaller buffer can make interaction feel more immediate, but leaves less room for problems between the encoder and the viewer. YouTube notes that network congestion can add delay even when the average bitrate is sustainable.

YouTube latency modes compared

Mode Best suited to YouTube’s published guidance Trade-off
Normal Continuous or otherwise non-interactive programming No numeric target stated on YouTube’s help page Highest viewer quality and least buffering; all resolutions and live features are supported.
Low Limited audience interaction YouTube says most viewers experience less than 10 seconds of latency. Does not support 4K; shorter buffer means more exposure to buffering than Normal.
Ultra-low Real-time conversation or interaction YouTube says most viewers experience less than 5 seconds of latency. Does not support 4K and may increase buffering; more sensitive to ingestion issues.

The “most viewers” figures are YouTube’s published guidance, not guaranteed end-to-end delays for every viewer. The actual experience can vary with the viewer’s connection and playback conditions.

Set the YouTube destination’s latency in Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room for the stream.
  2. Open the stream dashboard and select Stream Settings.
  3. Under Stream latency, choose Normal, Low or Ultra-low. For a low-interaction 24/7 channel, leave it on Normal.
  4. Save or apply the selection if Studio presents that option, then verify the stream is using the intended setting before relying on shorter delay for an interactive segment.

YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are always set up for interactivity and do not offer a selectable latency setting. The selectable stream-latency control applies to eligible encoder-based streams.

What Castr’s LL and ULL settings actually change

Castr’s latency labels refer to playback through Castr’s own player, not a replacement for the latency mode configured for the YouTube destination. Set the YouTube audience’s mode in YouTube Studio. If viewers also watch through an embedded Castr player or Castr player link, configure and verify that playback separately.

Setting or feature What it applies to Published latency guidance
Castr LL Castr player playback, where the account and plan support it Castr says latency is less than 15 seconds.
Castr ULL Castr player playback, where available Castr says latency is less than two seconds.
Castr Sub-Second Streaming Castr player only Castr describes sub-second playback; its documentation says social destinations use standard latency.

These are Castr’s published service descriptions, not independent measurements, and they should not be added to or substituted for YouTube’s latency estimates. Castr’s January 2026 low-latency guide says LL is available to Ultra and Premium-yearly subscribers. Check your account and current dashboard before planning around LL or ULL, since availability is plan-dependent.

Configure a Castr-to-YouTube stream

  1. Create or open the livestream in Castr and select an ingest region near the broadcast source.
  2. Configure the stream input using a supported method such as RTMP/RTMPS or SRT.
  3. Add YouTube as a destination using Castr’s YouTube API connection or the YouTube server and stream key. Follow Castr’s setup flow for the connection method you choose.
  4. Set the YouTube destination’s latency in YouTube Studio using the steps above. Do not assume that selecting LL or ULL for Castr playback changes YouTube’s setting.
  5. If using Castr playback as well, select the appropriate Castr player mode in the Castr dashboard and confirm its plan eligibility and viewing destination.
  6. Monitor stream health in Castr’s dashboard and check the YouTube viewer experience separately. A Castr player setting cannot guarantee the same delay on YouTube.

Keep a 24/7 stream operational

Castr says it supports unlimited stream duration while the subscription remains active and has enough streaming bandwidth. That is a condition, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery: the source encoder, power, network connection, account and available bandwidth still need to remain in service.

  • Prefer wired Ethernet for the source encoder. Castr recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can introduce packet loss and latency spikes. Ethernet can improve the local network link, but it cannot choose YouTube’s latency mode or guarantee a particular viewer delay.
  • Watch stream-health information. Castr’s dashboard provides stream-health information that can help identify issues at the ingest side.
  • Match the mode to the programme. If the channel is mostly a one-way continuous feed, Normal avoids trading buffer headroom for interactivity most viewers may not need.
  • Check the conditions behind “24/7.” Duration depends on active subscription and sufficient streaming bandwidth; source equipment and connectivity must also continue working.

Troubleshoot delay, buffering and mode confusion

Viewers report buffering after switching to Low or Ultra-low

Likely cause: The reduced buffer makes playback more sensitive to network or ingestion problems. Fix: Return the YouTube stream to Normal if real-time interaction is not essential. If keeping a shorter delay, check encoder-to-Castr network stability and Castr’s stream-health information; wired Ethernet may help with local Wi-Fi packet loss or latency spikes.

YouTube viewers do not see the Castr ULL or sub-second delay

Likely cause: Castr’s LL/ULL and Sub-Second descriptions concern Castr player playback. Castr documents Sub-Second as available only in its player and says social destinations use standard latency. Fix: Set the YouTube destination’s mode in YouTube Studio and treat Castr player behavior as separate.

The YouTube latency selector is missing

Likely cause: YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are always set up for interactivity and do not have a selectable latency setting. Fix: If you need a selectable mode, use an eligible encoder-based stream and inspect its Stream Settings in the Live Control Room.

A 4K stream cannot use Low or Ultra-low

Cause: YouTube’s Low and Ultra-low modes do not support 4K. Fix: Use Normal for a 4K stream, or choose a lower resolution if shorter latency is more important than 4K; verify the selected resolution and mode in the stream setup.

Latency rises despite a sustainable average bitrate

Likely cause: YouTube notes that network congestion can cause delay even when average bitrate is sustainable. Fix: Check the source network and stream-health indicators, and consider Normal if the stream is too sensitive to transient network issues.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your 24/7 YouTube channel plays uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Frequently Asked Questions

Does YouTube publish an exact Normal-latency target?

No. YouTube’s latency guidance describes Normal’s buffering and quality trade-off without giving it a numeric target.

Can I use Castr ULL to make a YouTube stream sub-second?

No. Castr’s Sub-Second playback is documented for its own player; YouTube’s destination latency is configured separately in YouTube Studio.
