These are separate problems with different controls. For a finite local video that should repeat, enable Loop in the OBS Media Source properties. If the broadcast itself ends, check YouTube Live Control Room’s auto-stop setting; if OBS disconnects, check its reconnection settings.
Find which part of the stream stopped
A source reaching the end of a file does not, by itself, establish that OBS stopped sending output or that YouTube ended the broadcast. Check OBS’s streaming status alongside the event status in YouTube Live Control Room before changing settings.
- The video or other source disappears, but OBS still says it is streaming and YouTube is receiving data: inspect the source’s playback settings.
- OBS reports a dropped connection or a reconnect attempt: investigate the encoder connection and OBS’s Automatic Reconnect settings.
- YouTube reports that the event ended: inspect the event’s broadcast controls, including auto-stop, and confirm how the event was started.
The exact cause cannot be identified without the source type, OBS status or logs, Live Control Room status, and the event’s settings. The distinction matters: looping a file will not restore a broken connection, and reconnecting OBS will not make a finished file play again. OBS documents the playback controls separately from reconnection, while YouTube documents auto-stop as a stream setting. Make a local video repeat in OBS
Enable Loop for a finite file
- In OBS, select the scene containing the video and select its Media Source in the Sources list.
- Open the source’s properties.
- Turn on Loop so the file starts again after playback completes, then apply the change.
- Test the scene and confirm that the file restarts while OBS output remains active.
Restart playback when source becomes active is a different setting. It restarts the file when the source becomes active in the current scene and visible; it does not make a file loop continuously. Use it when you want playback to start over after hiding the source or switching scenes and returning.

Understand the other end-of-playback and inactive-source options
- Show nothing when playback ends hides the source after the file finishes. It does not instruct OBS or YouTube to end the live broadcast.
- Close file when inactive unloads the file while its source is hidden or off the current scene. It may take a moment to load again when the source becomes active.
These properties apply to OBS’s Media Source. If you use a different source type, look for that source’s own playback controls rather than assuming the Media Source options apply. OBS’s guide describes these behaviors in its Media Sources documentation.
If you use VLC Video instead of Media Source
OBS’s VLC Video source has playlist-oriented controls, distinct from a single Media Source file. Its Loop Playlist option is on by default. The source also has a Visibility Behaviour setting for whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is not visible.
VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. With 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Check the playlist and visibility behavior that match your intended playback before diagnosing the broadcast itself as stopped. See OBS: Media Sources.

If OBS disconnected from YouTube
OBS’s Automatically Reconnect option concerns recovery of a disconnected streaming output; it does not loop local media or restore a source that is no longer available. Find it under OBS’s Settings > Advanced options, enable it if appropriate, and test the event rather than relying on it without verification. OBS lists Automatic Reconnect in its Overview Guide.

Those practices can help assess connection resilience, but they do not fix a local file that has ended or a remote source that has become unavailable. See YouTube live streaming tips.
If YouTube ended the broadcast
In YouTube Studio, open the event in Live Control Room and inspect its auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube says that when these encoder-stream settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from the encoder. Auto-stop therefore affects whether stopping the encoder can stop the broadcast; it is not an OBS media playback control. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop passage applies to encoder and mobile streams, not webcam streams. Manage live stream settings.

If you reused stream settings or an event, check the current selections rather than assuming they reset: YouTube says reused settings copy the auto-stop selection. For a scheduled event, follow the Live Control Room workflow. YouTube’s encoder instructions say that after the preview appears, a scheduled stream may still require you to select Go live. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Match the symptom to the control

Troubleshoot common cases
The video ends, but the live broadcast continues
Enable Loop on a finite Media Source file. If it is a VLC Video playlist, check Loop Playlist instead. Confirm that the source is still present in the active scene and visible.

The source goes blank after playback
Check whether Show nothing when playback ends is enabled. That setting hides the source at the end of playback; it does not mean the broadcast must stop. Enable looping if the content should repeat.

The source is slow to return after a scene change
If Close file when inactive is enabled, OBS unloads the file while the source is inactive, and loading it again can take time. Test the source’s behavior with that option changed if the delay disrupts your scene transitions.
OBS shows a disconnect or reconnect attempt
Check OBS’s output status and Automatic Reconnect configuration, then test the event and monitor YouTube’s stream health. A reconnect control addresses the output connection, not missing media.
YouTube says the event ended or never went live
Inspect auto-stop in the event’s Live Control Room settings. For a scheduled encoder stream, verify that the event has progressed through preview and that you selected Go live if prompted. Recheck settings on reused events.

The OBS source is remote rather than a local file
Looping a local file is not a remedy for an unavailable remote source. Verify the remote source’s availability and its own playback behavior, while separately checking whether OBS output and the YouTube event are still active.
