Cash Out is a 2024 bank-heist action thriller built around a personal standoff: retired thief Mason Goddard returns to help his brother after a robbery goes wrong, only to find his former lover, Amelia Decker, leading the negotiations. That setup promises more than a routine hostage siege, but the film is classified as an action thriller—not a comedy—and its caper appeal depends on how much viewers enjoy its familiar heist ingredients and central pairing.
What is Cash Out about?
Mason Goddard (John Travolta) is a criminal mastermind planning a major robbery with his lover and crew member, Decker (Kristin Davis). She reveals that she is an undercover Interpol agent. Mason escapes and retires, but the past catches up when his younger brother Shawn (Lukas Haas) attempts a bank robbery that goes beyond his abilities.

Mason returns to help, and the crew becomes trapped with hostages. Decker is assigned as lead negotiator. She knows Mason personally, so the standoff is also a reunion between former partners on opposite sides of the law. The film’s central tension comes from that relationship: Mason has to get his crew out with the prize while dealing with the woman who once betrayed him.
Is Cash Out funny or worth watching?
The premise has the ingredients of a comic caper—an overmatched crew, an ex-couple facing off, and a robbery that unravels—but the available catalogues classify the film as action and thriller. It is safer to approach it as a heist thriller with a personal hook than to expect a full-on comedy.

Critical reception has been unfavorable overall. Rotten Tomatoes’ listing reported a 20% Tomatometer from 20 critic reviews and a 21% Popcornmeter from 50-plus ratings when consulted; both scores and counts can change. Its critics consensus reads: “With its undercooked plotting and uninspired execution, Cash Out leaves John Travolta stranded in a thriller that feels assembled from better movies.”
Individual responses point to the film’s uneven appeal. Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times praised Travolta’s screen presence and described the movie as a B-movie riff on The Thomas Crown Affair in an April 27, 2024 review. Sara Michelle Fetters of MovieFreak.com criticized the pacing and rudimentary plotting on April 30, 2024, while Catherine Bray of The Guardian criticized the screenplay and plot on July 5, 2024. These are critics’ assessments, not a substitute for a viewer’s own taste: the cast and ex-lovers premise may appeal to viewers who are forgiving of familiar plotting, while viewers seeking taut suspense or sharply original heist mechanics may find less to enjoy.
