Spoilers for the complete film. James Stokes is the operative behind the Severus leak, while senior official Arthur Stieglitz is the architect of the wider scheme. Kathryn is framed as a suspect, not revealed as the traitor. Zoe Vaughan and Freddie Smalls are secretly pursuing a separate plan to stop the operation.
Who leaked Severus—and who planned the operation?
The ending separates two roles that can be easy to conflate: Stokes is the operative traitor, and Stieglitz masterminds the plan to get Severus to Pavilchuk. Stokes helps advance that plan and directs suspicion toward Kathryn. Stieglitz’s objective is to use the malware to destabilize Russia, accepting the risk to innocent people.
George begins with five possible suspects after learning that Severus has been compromised. As the investigation unfolds, apparent clues point toward his wife: an unexplained movie stub, a trip to Zurich and a supposed £7 million account attached to one of her old aliases. The evidence prompts George to watch Kathryn, but the trail is a false lead rather than proof she arranged the leak. What to Watch’s ending recap describes how the reveal reframes the clues as part of the scheme against Kathryn and George.
How the final confrontation exposes Stokes
George and Kathryn eventually work together. Kathryn uses a CIA contact to stop Pavilchuk’s route to Russia, while George explains at the final dinner that Zoe and Freddie have their own counter-plan to frustrate Stieglitz’s operation. Their secrecy does not make them the main traitors: they are trying to prevent the dangerous scheme from succeeding.

Clarissa has manipulated the polygraph, but the ending does not identify her as part of the leak. George’s evidence points to Stokes, including his connection to the account story. Stokes tries to shoot George, but the gun he grabs is loaded with blanks. Kathryn kills him, and the confrontation captures his confession.
Why Kathryn looked guilty
The clues against Kathryn are designed to make George question both his marriage and his loyalty to his country. Her Zurich trip and the account in an old alias appear incriminating when he investigates them in isolation. The reveal changes their meaning: Stokes steers suspicion toward her as part of the wider plot, rather than the film establishing her as the person who leaked Severus.

The film’s official synopsis describes the investigation as a test of George’s loyalty to his marriage and his country. That conflict is more than a spy-thriller puzzle: George must judge evidence about his wife in a world where secrecy and deception are part of the job. Screenwriter David Koepp says the story grew from conversations with intelligence advisers during his research for the first Mission: Impossible film and from the strain secrecy puts on relationships.
What Severus is—and what it is not
Severus is fictional malware in the film, described in the production notes as capable of destabilizing a nuclear facility. Koepp says the idea drew in part on Stuxnet, which he describes as malware that caused Iranian nuclear centrifuges to spin out of control. That is an inspiration for the fictional device, not evidence that a real program called Severus exists. Director Steven Soderbergh describes Severus as an inciting incident and, more importantly, a way to explore what happens when someone suspects a spouse of breaking an unspoken agreement. The malware gives the characters a high-stakes reason to investigate; the film’s central tension remains the difficulty of knowing whom to trust when even intimate relationships contain secrets.
What the ending says about George and Kathryn
George and Kathryn end the film together, but their resolution is not a simple moral victory. They stop the scheme and keep the £7 million associated with Stokes’s account. That choice reads as a wry, morally gray coda: their loyalty to each other survives, while they are willing to benefit from money tied to the conspiracy. It does not mean they supported Stieglitz’s plan.

The title also plays into the film’s interest in secrecy. Koepp says he repurposed “black bag” as spy slang that “doesn’t actually exist—but maybe it should,” borrowing the phrase from a producer who used it for things that would never be discussed. It should not be taken as established real-world intelligence jargon. Clarissa’s question in the film captures the problem the title points toward: “If you can lie about everything, how do you tell the truth?”
