The result is a streaming-first action movie whose clearest strengths are its straightforward premise, Beckinsale’s central role, and accessible runtime, while its screenplay attracted predominantly negative critical reactions.

What is Canary Black about?
Canary Black follows Avery Graves, a highly trained CIA operative whose husband is kidnapped by terrorists. The kidnappers force Avery to betray her country, obtain a coveted intelligence package, and deliver information that could cause a worldwide crisis. Cut off from her agency team, Avery turns to criminal contacts while navigating an international conspiracy and repeated betrayals.
Prime Video’s official trailer describes the setup this way: “A top CIA operative, Avery Graves, is blackmailed by terrorists into betraying her own country to save her kidnapped husband.” The promotional description adds that Avery must rely on “cutting-edge training and primitive fighting skills” during a race to deliver a ransom that could trigger a global crisis. Those are Prime Video’s marketing statements rather than independent critical assessments, but they accurately capture the film’s central hook. Prime Video’s official trailer description provides the quoted premise.

Where was Canary Black filmed?
Canary Black was filmed largely in Croatia, with Zagreb serving as the principal production base. Croatian locations were used to represent multiple international settings, helping the film create a broader European and global scale without shooting in every location depicted in the story. Trade reporting from the start of principal photography identifies the Croatian production and Zagreb base in Cineuropa’s production report.
Production-location notes also associate the shoot with Zagreb, Rovinj, and Ljubljana. The production involved Anton, Sentient Entertainment, Brickell & Broadbridge International, Oakhurst Entertainment, and Croatian service production.
From a technical perspective, Sony Professional Cinema identifies the film as shot with the Sony VENICE 2 camera and credits Thierry Arbogast as director of photography. Camera equipment is a production fact, not evidence that the film is automatically better or worse; image quality also depends on lighting, lenses, grading, editorial choices, and the final presentation. The technical credit appears on Sony Professional Cinema’s Canary Black production page.

Is Canary Black worth watching?
Canary Black is most likely to suit viewers who want a compact, female-led action thriller with a kidnapping hook, international locations, and a familiar lone-operative structure. Viewers looking for an intricately original spy plot, sustained suspense, or substantial emotional development should approach it more cautiously because the critical response was strongly negative overall.
The film’s appeal and its main weakness are closely connected. Kate Beckinsale provides the star presence and anchors the action, while the premise supplies immediate stakes. Critics generally recognized familiar or serviceable action ingredients, but reviews commonly described the screenplay as formulaic, overcomplicated, insufficiently suspenseful, or lacking emotional depth.
Rotten Tomatoes’ 2026 access snapshot recorded a 10% Tomatometer from 10 critics and a 32% audience score from more than 250 ratings. Those figures are dated snapshots: review counts and audience percentages can change, so they should not be read as permanent scores.
| If you primarily want… | What Canary Black offers | Likely qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Action set pieces | A recognizable international action-thriller format led by Beckinsale. | The action may appeal more than the narrative construction. |
| A tightly engineered spy story | A CIA operative, intelligence package, criminal contacts, and global stakes. | Critics frequently objected to the formulaic or overcomplicated screenplay. |
| A strong central star | Kate Beckinsale carries the role of Avery Graves. | Reviews questioned the depth of the character development and emotional material. |
| Easy streaming access | The dated U.S. check found the film on Prime Video and Prime Video with Ads. | Availability is regional and time-sensitive. |
The fairest verdict is that Canary Black is a convenient-to-find streaming action thriller with a clear hook and international production scale, but its weak critical reception suggests that the film’s familiar ingredients do not consistently become an original or deeply suspenseful spy story.

Reports described allegations in a legal complaint involving long working days, inadequate preparation or support, and a left-knee meniscus injury. The allegations should not be presented as proven findings.
The Guardian reported a statement attributed to producer John Zois in response to concerns about the shooting schedule: “I don’t know what else to say other than you’re right … The days are too packed for the pace we are moving and it’s CLEARLY not sustainable.” The quote is reproduced as reported by The Guardian’s June 12, 2025 report. TheWrap also covered the lawsuit and the allegations in its June 11, 2025 report.
The available research does not establish a final court disposition, settlement, dismissal, or judgment as of August 13, 2026. No conclusion that the producers were liable or that the allegations were proven should be drawn from the filing or from news coverage of the lawsuit.
