Rotten Tomatoes currently shows Carry-On at 87% on the Tomatometer and 52% on the Popcornmeter. Those figures were displayed when the page was checked on October 8, 2026. They are current values, not a confirmed launch-day score, and the gap between them is simply the difference between the two published numbers: 35 percentage points.
What the two Rotten Tomatoes scores measure
Rotten Tomatoes reports two separate aggregates for the film. Each one answers a different question, so they should not be read as competing verdicts on the same audience.

| Rotten Tomatoes measure | Value shown (checked October 8, 2026) | Basis as displayed | What it reflects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tomatometer | 87% | 107 reviews | Aggregate of professional critic reviews |
| Popcornmeter | 52% | 5,000+ ratings | Aggregate of audience ratings |
The Tomatometer is built from a relatively small pool of professional reviews, while the Popcornmeter draws on thousands of individual ratings. Neither figure is a measure of box office, viewing numbers on Netflix, or how many people finished the film. Rotten Tomatoes does not, in the material available for this article, explain why the two groups diverge, and no published analysis of the gap is cited here.
Why no launch-day score is cited
The headline in circulation refers to a “debut” score. The current Rotten Tomatoes page is accessible and shows live numbers, but no archived first-day snapshot or date of first appearance for either percentage was available to confirm one. For that reason, the 87% and 52% figures should be treated as the page’s values on the check date, which will move as more reviews and ratings are added. Any statement about how the film was received on its first day would need a dated record that is not currently on hand.

The film at a glance
According to the Rotten Tomatoes listing for the 2024 film:
- Runtime: 1 hour 59 minutes
- Rating: PG-13
- Genres: action, drama and mystery-thriller
- Director: Jaume Collet-Serra
- Cast: Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler and Theo Rossi
Netflix’s official logline sets the premise: a young TSA agent fights to outsmart a mysterious traveler who blackmails him into letting a dangerous package slip onto a Christmas Eve flight. Netflix Tudum’s December 13, 2024 article describes the story as a contained airport thriller, with Ethan working a TSA bag scanner while the Traveler presses him.
What critics said, and where the praise lands
The critics consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads: “Taron Egerton and an against-type Jason Bateman make for great adversaries in Carry-On, a throwback thriller that clears all checkpoints of plot logic with its confident execution.”

- Carry on Cleo
- Carry on Cleo
That line puts the praise on two things: the two leads working against each other, and a plot that holds together on its own terms. It does not claim the film is realistic in every procedural detail. The audience side of the page is more restrained, and the consensus does not explain it.

Performances and the kind of hero Egerton plays
Netflix Tudum quotes Egerton on how he approached the role: “When Jaume first approached me about the role, I told him I didn’t want to do something that felt like an archetypal action hero,” Egerton told Netflix. He continues that neither he nor Collet-Serra thought that was what made Ethan interesting, and that they focused on making him relatable and normal.
That choice matters for how the film works. Ethan is not a trained fighter piling up kills; he is an ordinary worker pulled into a situation he cannot easily leave. Viewers who came for a conventional action lead may read the film differently from those who came for a tense, character-driven thriller.

Building a thriller inside one building
Collet-Serra explains the approach in Netflix Tudum: “Contained environments force us to get to know the movie’s characters very quickly and personally — we’re immediately in the thick of the story with them, which creates a genuine investment in what’s happening on-screen,” Collet-Serra tells Tudum.
The setting is therefore central rather than decorative. Most of the tension comes from a small cast of people in one location with a clock running.
The airport setting and production consultation
Netflix Tudum reports that the story is set at LAX, while production used a retired airport in New Orleans that was redesigned to resemble LAX. The same article says TSA advisers and Dr. Erroll G. Southers, a former airport-police and intelligence official, advised the production.

- Full HD 1080P Resolution: Watch the latest Blu-ray Disc movies in Full High Definition quality, for depth and image clarity far exceeding that of DVD, so you can enjoy astonishing detail for all of your favorite movies
- Compact Space-Saving Design: Slim size allows the Blu Ray DVD player to fit neatly in narrow spaces and on thin racks, making it suitable for any entertainment setup
- Superior Picture and Sound Quality: Offers full HD support, beautifully up-converting images to high-definition image quality (1080p), and boasts superior audio with Dolby Digital sound
- Included Components: Comes with a Remote Control (Batteries not included), HDMI cable, AV Cable for projector, Smart TV, TV or other portable screen devices
- Extensive Compatibility: Supports Max 128G USB Flash Drive and all DVDs and Region A 1 Blu-Rays with built-in PAL/NTSC capability
That consultation shaped the film’s setting and procedures during production. It does not establish that every airport procedure shown in the story is accurate, and readers should not take the advisers’ involvement as an endorsement of the film’s realism.

The Christmas Eve flight in the logline is more than a backdrop. Collet-Serra says: “My hope is that Carry-On can be enjoyed all year round as a fun, popcorn thriller,” Collet-Serra says. “But of course, the holiday travel theme is integral to our story, and we definitely had fun with it in terms of Christmas decorations in the airport and some classic holiday tunes in the soundtrack.”
That framing explains the film’s pitch to holiday viewers. The director presents it as a thriller first, with the season adding texture rather than defining the genre.

Where to watch
Netflix released Carry-On on December 13, 2024, according to Netflix Tudum and Amblin’s official film page. Rotten Tomatoes lists Netflix as the streaming option. Availability varies by country and can change, so confirm that the film is included in your territory on Netflix before planning to watch.
Should you watch it?
The scores point in two directions. Critics are noticeably more positive, and their consensus praises the lead performances and the plot’s internal logic. Audiences are split, with the Popcornmeter at 52% on the check date. If you are choosing based on critics, the film looks like a well-executed, tightly built airport thriller. If you are choosing based on audience ratings, expect a far more divided response, and decide whether the film’s contained, character-focused style suits your taste.
For a holiday night in, the premise is the main selling point: a single airport, a Christmas Eve flight, and a man who has to outmaneuver someone who has trapped him.
