Some viewers heard the cast of The Gilded Age speaking Spanish during season 3, episode 7, “Ex-Communicated,” on HBO Max. It was an apparent audio-track mix-up—not an intentional Spanish-language release—and Carrie Coon had the perfect joke about it.
Some viewers opening The Gilded Age season 3, episode 7, “Ex-Communicated,” on HBO Max on August 3, 2025, were greeted by an unexpected soundtrack: the cast was speaking Spanish. The problem was not a new creative direction or an intentional Spanish-language version of the period drama. Reports described an apparent HBO Max audio-track mix-up affecting some viewers during the U.S. premiere window.
The issue was later reported as resolved. During the incident, however, viewers discovered a counterintuitive temporary workaround: selecting “Spanish (Latin America)” from the episode’s audio options could cause the English track to play.
What happened to The Gilded Age episode 7?
The affected episode was season 3, episode 7, titled “Ex-Communicated.” It is part of Julian Fellowes’s drama about rival old- and new-money families in 1880s New York, led by Carrie Coon as Bertha Russell and featuring Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, and a large ensemble cast.

Viewers reported that the episode’s audio did not match the normal English-language presentation. Instead, dialogue played in Spanish even though their HBO Max settings had not changed. The available reporting supports describing this as an apparent audio-track labeling or mapping error. It does not establish whether the underlying cause was an upload, encoding, localization, or software problem.
It also was not a universal failure for every HBO Max subscriber. The incident generated multiple or widespread viewer reports, but that is different from saying that everyone who watched the episode encountered it.
Carrie Coon joked about the unexpected “accent”
Carrie Coon responded on X on August 4 with the playful message: “¿A todos les gustó mi acento?”
The Spanish sentence translates as “Did everyone like my accent?” Coon included a smiley face and hashtags associated with the series and her character, Bertha Russell, turning a frustrating streaming mishap into a brief entertainment-news moment.

There is no indication that Coon dubbed herself or deliberately recorded a Spanish version of the episode. Her post was a joke about the platform error.
HBO Max apologized with a Spanish-language pun
HBO Max also acknowledged the problem in a joking social-media post. The streamer referred to the show with the Spanish title La Edad Dorada and added: “But for real, lo siento.”
“Lo siento” means “I’m sorry.” The post was a playful acknowledgment rather than a detailed technical explanation, and HBO Max did not publicly identify a specific system or production error in the reporting available about the incident.
The reported workaround: choose “Spanish (Latin America)”
During the glitch, multiple viewer discussions and contemporaneous reports said that changing the episode’s audio selection to “Spanish (Latin America)” made the program play in English. That seemingly backward result is consistent with the English and Spanish tracks being reversed or mislabeled for the affected episode.

To try the workaround on a device that exposes the episode’s audio menu:
- Start “Ex-Communicated.”
- Open the playback controls.
- Select the audio, language, or subtitles menu.
- Choose “Spanish (Latin America)”.
- Resume playback and check whether the spoken dialogue is now English.
This was an incident-specific workaround reported by viewers, not a general HBO Max troubleshooting rule. It may not work on every device, app version, territory, or language configuration. If it does not work, close and reopen the episode, check the available tracks again, or wait for the corrected version to appear rather than assuming that changing the app’s overall language will fix the problem.
Why could selecting Spanish produce English audio?
Streaming services can provide multiple audio tracks and may remember the last track a viewer selected. HBO Max’s help guidance also explains that the service can use the app’s language setting when an appropriate audio option is available.
That behavior helps explain how a mislabeled or incorrectly mapped track could affect playback: the menu may identify one language while the file actually contains another. But the platform’s general audio-language documentation does not confirm the root cause of this particular The Gilded Age incident. It is more accurate to call it an apparent audio-track mix-up than to claim a confirmed encoding or localization failure.

Was the HBO Max Spanish glitch fixed?
Yes. Later reporting said the issue had been resolved after the initial viewer reports. The available coverage describes the event as an accidental Spanish-language stream, but no detailed primary postmortem explaining exactly how the mistake happened was located.
That means viewers should distinguish between what is known and what remains uncertain:
- Known: Some viewers heard Spanish audio during season 3, episode 7, “Ex-Communicated.”
- Known: Carrie Coon joked about the incident, and HBO Max issued a playful apology.
- Reported: Selecting “Spanish (Latin America)” sometimes restored English audio.
- Reported: The problem was subsequently resolved.
- Not confirmed: The exact technical cause, such as a particular upload, encoding process, localization workflow, or software component.
Where can fans watch or keep the series?
Streaming availability, pricing, and digital purchase options can change by country and date. Listings associated with Amazon have shown The Gilded Age available for digital season or episode purchase, while U.S.-focused availability information has also listed HBO Max, HBO Max through Amazon Channels, and Amazon Video purchase options. Check the current listing and your territory before purchasing.
Fans who want a physical backup can also look for The Complete First Season on DVD. That release is relevant for offline ownership, but it is not a fix for the HBO Max audio bug and covers the first season rather than the affected third-season episode. Prices, stock, sellers, and regional compatibility should be verified before ordering.
