Follow the matching branch below.
If you cannot click a YouTube video, first determine which kind of failure you have:
- Clicks fail on other websites too: troubleshoot the mouse, touchpad, touchscreen, connection, or operating system.
- Only YouTube thumbnails, titles, or recommendations fail to open: test the browser, extensions, cookies, and YouTube page loading.
- The video opens but Play or the player controls do nothing: suspect blocked scripts, stale site data, an outdated app or browser, sign-in problems, or a temporary YouTube failure.
- The video opens but says it is unavailable: the video may be private, age-restricted, region-blocked, policy-limited, or unsupported by the app or embed.
- A URL shown on YouTube is not clickable: it may be a Shorts comment or description link, which YouTube intentionally leaves non-clickable.
Use the decision tree below rather than immediately reinstalling software or deleting all browser data. Most causes can be isolated with a few low-risk tests.
1. Check whether your mouse or touchscreen works elsewhere
Open another website and click several ordinary links. Then click the browser’s address bar, type a web address, and try pressing Tab to move between controls and Enter to activate one.

If clicks fail across multiple websites, YouTube is probably not the cause. Check the following:
- Reconnect a USB mouse to another USB port.
- Replace or recharge wireless-mouse batteries.
- Reconnect the wireless receiver or Bluetooth connection.
- Clean dirt from the mouse sensor and make sure the surface is suitable.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the mouse on another computer, if possible.
On Windows, install available updates through Settings > Windows Update. You can also check the pointing device in Device Manager, but use Windows Update or the device manufacturer’s driver before trying third-party driver software.
If the mouse fails on another computer, replacement is more sensible than changing YouTube settings. A wireless computer mouse can be a practical option when the existing mouse has a defective button, depleted battery, damaged cable, or unreliable receiver. This is a hardware recommendation for a broader clicking failure—not a solution for an unavailable video or a YouTube account restriction.
If the pointer moves and keyboard navigation works but mouse clicks do not, use Tab and Enter temporarily while you diagnose the pointing device.
2. Refresh YouTube and test a private browser window
If clicking works elsewhere, refresh the YouTube page and try a different video. Close and reopen the browser if refreshing does not help.
Next, open YouTube in an Incognito or private window. In Chrome, select More (the three-dot menu) > New Incognito window. Sign-in state and most extensions are isolated in this test. YouTube recommends this approach when browser extensions or ad blockers may interfere with playback.
Interpret the result:
- Videos work in the private window: an extension, stored site data, or your normal browser profile is the likely cause.
- Videos fail in both windows: continue with the page, account, network, app, and content checks below.
Ad blockers, privacy tools, script blockers, download helpers, and browser-customization extensions are the highest-priority suspects because they can change YouTube’s page or block network requests. This does not prove that any particular extension is defective.

To isolate one, open the browser’s extensions manager, disable extensions, and test YouTube. In Chrome, select More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Re-enable extensions one at a time until the problem returns. Chrome also provides options to repair, remove, or restrict an extension’s access to particular sites.
3. Clear YouTube’s cached files and site data
Do not begin by deleting every saved password and browsing record. Start with the least disruptive reset:
- Clear the browser’s cached files.
- Reopen YouTube and test a video.
- If the problem continues, remove site data for YouTube and Google.
- Open YouTube again and sign in if prompted.
- Test before immediately restoring or re-enabling all extensions.
Cookies and site data can become stale or conflict with a changed page. However, deleting them can sign you out and remove saved preferences. Blocked cookies can also prevent some websites from working properly, so check the browser’s cookie settings if YouTube repeatedly returns to a sign-in or loading screen.
After clearing data, a first load may take slightly longer. The expected result is a fresh YouTube session in which thumbnails, titles, the player, comments, and controls respond normally.
4. Check whether YouTube loaded only part of the page
Sometimes the watch page appears to load while its interactive features do not. YouTube documents an “Error loading the page, please try again” condition in which a limited version of the page may still show the title, channel name, view count, and publication date but omit or disable features such as Like, Share, Download, the description, and comments.

When several YouTube features fail at once:
- Perform a hard refresh or close and reopen the tab.
- Try another video and another YouTube page.
- Test a private browser window.
- Try another network, such as a phone hotspot, if available.
- Wait briefly and retry if the failure affects multiple YouTube features simultaneously.
A page-wide failure is different from a single video being unavailable. If only one video is affected, inspect its availability message before changing browser settings.
5. Update the browser, YouTube app, and device
Use the latest available version of a compatible browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. Browser updates are not guaranteed to fix YouTube, but they address compatibility problems and known regressions that can leave pages partially rendered.

On a phone or tablet, update the YouTube app through the device’s app store, then restart the device. On a smart TV or streaming device:
- Close and reopen YouTube.
- Restart or power-cycle the device.
- Install any available YouTube app and system updates.
- Test YouTube again.
If the issue occurs only in a third-party television, media-center, or mobile app, the app may not support the YouTube feature you are trying to use. Switch to the official YouTube app or access YouTube in a supported browser.

Some YouTube features do not work correctly while signed out. Sign in through the official YouTube website or app, then retry the video. Sign-in can also matter for protected content involving minors and for features such as offline downloads.
Restricted Mode
Restricted Mode is separate from age restriction. It operates at the browser or device level and can be enabled by you or enforced by a school, library, university, workplace, or other administrator. When active, comments are unavailable and some videos are filtered.
Check the YouTube account or profile menu for the Restricted Mode setting. If it is locked or controlled by an organization, contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the control.
Age-restricted videos
Age-restricted videos cannot be watched by signed-out viewers, viewers under 18, or viewers using most third-party embedded players. The legitimate options are to sign in, complete an official age-verification prompt if one appears, and use the official YouTube site or app. Do not use unofficial workarounds to evade age restrictions.

- Private video: the owner has not made it publicly viewable. A link alone does not grant access.
- Region restriction: the owner may have limited distribution in your country, often for licensing reasons, or YouTube may be complying with local law.
- Age restriction: the account, age, or embedded player does not meet YouTube’s requirements.
- Policy or account limitation: YouTube or the owner has restricted access.
- Unsupported app or embed: the third-party app cannot play that YouTube content.
A private video may not appear publicly or in search results at all. If a third-party app displays “The following content is not available on this app,” use the official YouTube app or a browser. Changing the mouse, clearing cookies, or repeatedly clicking the thumbnail will not make a private or region-limited video public.
8. Check whether the “link” is deliberately non-clickable
YouTube treats different link locations differently. Channel profile links, some external brand-deal links, long-form video descriptions and comments, selected Live chat contexts, end screens, and YouTube-native links may be clickable. URLs in Shorts comments and Shorts descriptions are intentionally non-clickable.
Before troubleshooting the browser, identify where the URL appears:

- Shorts description or comment: copy the text manually if appropriate, or open the creator’s channel and use its profile links.
- Long-form description or comment: the creator’s formatting, moderation, or the page-loading problem may affect whether it opens.
- End screen or card: verify that the video has fully loaded and that scripts are not blocked.
If only a Shorts URL is not clickable while other YouTube controls work, this is a product-design rule—not evidence of a broken mouse or browser.

A weak connection usually causes buffering, quality reduction, or playback errors rather than a completely dead click target. Still, network testing is worthwhile if YouTube pages partially load or several videos fail.
- Restart the modem or router and reconnect the device.
- Try another video and another device on the same network.
- Try a different network if possible.
- Check whether the selected video quality exceeds the connection’s sustained speed.
YouTube’s approximate sustained-speed guidance is 0.7 Mbps for 360p, 1.1 Mbps for 480p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 20 Mbps for 4K. These figures describe approximate playback requirements, not a guarantee that every click or page load will work.
If “Something went wrong” continues across networks, review DNS settings. YouTube advises checking whether a third-party application has changed the preferred DNS servers. Do not install random “YouTube fix” utilities to change DNS automatically.

10. A Windows-specific fallback for persistent system problems
If YouTube works in a clean browser profile but Windows has continuing mouse, browser, privacy, or performance problems, address the broader system issue first: install Windows and manufacturer updates, remove conflicting extensions or recently installed utilities, and test another input device.
Some Windows users may also consider a Windows PC repair tool for broader browser or system maintenance after the basic checks are complete. It is not established as a direct fix for a YouTube click defect, so treat it as a conditional maintenance option—not a guaranteed YouTube solution. What not to do
- Do not bypass age, region, school, library, or workplace restrictions.
- Do not assume clearing cookies will fix every case; it can sign you out and remove preferences.
- Do not install random codec packs or unofficial YouTube downloaders.
- Do not disable antivirus protection as a first-line test.
- Do not edit the Windows registry for an ordinary YouTube clicking problem.
- Do not treat every unavailable video as a mouse or browser failure.
When to escalate the problem
Contact YouTube support or your device administrator after you have tested a clean browser session, cleared relevant site data, updated the browser or app, confirmed sign-in and restrictions, and tested the hardware and network.
Record this information before reporting the issue:
- Exact error message or wording shown on the page.
- Device type and operating system.
- Browser or YouTube app name and version.
- Whether the failure affects one video or every video.
- Whether thumbnails, Play, comments, descriptions, and other controls fail.
- Whether the same account works on another device or network.
- Whether keyboard navigation works when mouse clicking does not.
That evidence separates a defective input device from a browser profile problem, a temporary YouTube page failure, an account restriction, and a video that is genuinely unavailable.

Why does my mouse work everywhere except YouTube?
If the mouse works on other websites but not YouTube, test YouTube in an Incognito or private window. If it works there, disable extensions—especially ad blockers, privacy tools, and script blockers—one at a time. If that does not help, clear YouTube and Google site data, sign in again, and update the browser.
Why can I open a YouTube video but not press Play?
If only the Play button and player controls fail, refresh the page, test another video, use a private window, and temporarily disable extensions. A partially loaded YouTube page can show the title and channel while leaving interactive controls unavailable.
