Yes—but only on Xbox One-family consoles. Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One X can play Blu-ray 3D discs through the Blu-ray Player app, when connected to a compatible 3D TV or projector. Xbox Series X currently does not support Blu-ray 3D playback, despite its 4K UHD Blu-ray drive. Xbox Series S has no disc drive, so it cannot play movie discs.

Microsoft’s Xbox One specification sheet lists optical drives for the Xbox One family. Series X has a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive, while Series S is disc-free, as shown on Microsoft’s Xbox console page. A 4K disc drive does not, by itself, guarantee Blu-ray 3D support: current specialist coverage reports that Series X does not provide it. See Windows Central’s Series X review.
What counts as a 3D movie?
Blu-ray 3D is a specific disc format that carries separate images for the left and right eyes. A compatible player sends those images to a Blu-ray 3D-capable television or projector, which presents them for viewing with the display’s compatible glasses.

It is also different from 3D spatial audio: Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Windows Sonic position sounds around a listener; they do not add depth to the picture. Xbox’s discussion of spatial sound concerns audio, not stereoscopic movies.

Streaming apps are a separate case. The fact that an Xbox runs a video app does not establish that a particular 3D title is available there. Streaming support can depend on the service, title, country and display, so check those details separately.
How to play a Blu-ray 3D disc on Xbox One
- Connect an Xbox One, One S or One X with a working optical drive to a 3D-capable TV or projector using HDMI.
- Make sure any receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch or other equipment between the console and display can pass a 3D signal. For diagnosis, connect the Xbox directly to the display.
- On the console, open the Microsoft Store and install or update the Blu-ray Player app. Xbox’s disc movie playback support page explains the app requirement for DVD and Blu-ray playback.
- Insert the Blu-ray 3D disc. If playback does not start, open Blu-ray Player and select the movie.
- Set the TV or projector to its 3D mode if it does not switch automatically, then use the glasses required by that display.
The console is only one part of the setup. The display must explicitly support Blu-ray 3D; being a 4K or HDR television is not enough. You also need compatible glasses, the right display setting and an HDMI path that preserves the 3D signal.

Why Series X’s 4K Blu-ray drive is not enough
Series X can play DVDs, standard Blu-rays and 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays, but those capabilities do not mean it supports every Blu-ray feature. Blu-ray 3D playback is a separate capability, and current reporting indicates Series X does not currently provide it. Microsoft’s specifications identify the drive as 4K UHD Blu-ray but do not explicitly spell out 3D Blu-ray support; treat the Series X limitation as a current compatibility finding, not a promise about what future updates could or could not change.
An external USB Blu-ray drive is not a practical fix. Xbox is not a general-purpose PC Blu-ray player, and connecting an external drive does not add missing platform playback support.

Why Series S cannot play disc movies
Series S has no optical drive. Microsoft describes it as an all-digital console, and says external USB disc drives are not supported in its Series X|S FAQ. It therefore cannot play a physical Blu-ray 3D disc. Streaming video is a different matter, but does not turn the console into a disc player.
If the 3D disc plays in 2D or will not start
- Nothing happens when you insert the disc: Install or update Blu-ray Player, confirm the console has internet access if you need to download the app, and check that the drive reads other discs.
- The film plays in 2D: Confirm the disc is actually authored as Blu-ray 3D, enable 3D mode on the display, and check that the required glasses are working.
- The display reports that 3D is unavailable: If you have Series X or Series S, this is consistent with their current limitations. On an Xbox One, verify that the display supports Blu-ray 3D and test with the console connected directly to it.
- It works direct to the TV but not through a receiver or switch: The intermediate device or its settings may be preventing 3D signal pass-through.
- You have an Xbox One but no playback: Check the exact model and ensure the optical drive works. The Xbox One name alone is not enough if the console is a digital model or its drive is faulty.
Which Xbox should you choose for 3D movies?
If you already own an Xbox One, One S or One X, try it before buying another player. If you are buying a console primarily for physical 3D movies, do not choose Series S, and do not assume Series X will work just because it plays 4K discs. A compatible Xbox One or a dedicated player whose exact model specifications explicitly list Blu-ray 3D is a better starting point.

Check the whole setup before spending money: the player needs a working optical drive, the disc must be compatible with the player and region, and the TV or projector plus every device in the HDMI chain must support Blu-ray 3D. Many newer televisions lack 3D support, so a console cannot make a non-3D display show a stereoscopic movie.
