Can I Play Copyrighted Music in a 24/7 YouTube Live Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Usually, not without permission that specifically covers the live broadcast. Buying a track, subscribing to a music service, or seeing another channel use the same song does not establish that you can broadcast it. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may interrupt or terminate a stream. If you have a license, you may also need the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.

This is practical guidance on YouTube’s published rules, not a legal determination about a particular song. Copyright and exceptions vary by jurisdiction; YouTube’s live-stream terms require the necessary rights worldwide. YouTube’s live-stream guidance explains how detection and enforcement work.

What YouTube can do when it detects music in a live stream

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. If it detects a match, it may show a placeholder in place of the stream, warn you, temporarily interrupt the broadcast, or terminate it if the content remains. A copyright strike can also terminate a live stream. These are possible platform actions, not a guarantee that every match will be handled identically.

A Content ID claim and a copyright strike are not interchangeable terms. For an archived live stream, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the live stream finishes. That does not mean the live broadcast itself is protected from interruption while it is running.

What permission a 24/7 music stream needs

YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility on the person providing the content to have the necessary rights to use it on Google services worldwide. For music, rights may involve the recording and the underlying composition, along with artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Permission from one party may not cover every right in a track.

Before using commercial music, get written permission or a license from the relevant rights holders or an appropriately authorized administrator. Check that it covers each of the following:

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Live YouTube broadcasts: A license for private listening, downloads, or an uploaded video may not authorize live use.
  • Continuous duration: Confirm that the grant permits a 24/7 stream rather than a single broadcast or a limited number of plays.
  • Territories: Identify the countries where the stream may be available. Do not assume a regional grant covers a worldwide YouTube audience.
  • Monetization: Confirm whether advertising, donations, or other commercial use is allowed if relevant to your channel.
  • Archives and VOD: Check whether the permission continues to cover the recording after the live broadcast ends.
  • Both music rights: Verify coverage for the particular sound recording as well as the composition where required.
  • Content ID handling: Ask the rights holder or its authorized representative to add your channel to its allowlist, and retain confirmation and license records.

YouTube notes that a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not on the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when planning to use protected music in a live stream. Keep the agreement and allowlisting confirmation accessible in case a claim or interruption occurs.

Music sources and what their terms mean for live use

Source What to check for a 24/7 stream
YouTube Audio Library YouTube describes its Audio Library music and sound effects as copyright-safe on YouTube and says its library tracks will not be claimed through Content ID. Some tracks require attribution. The help guidance is framed around videos and does not expressly resolve every continuous live-use scenario, so check the individual track terms and current guidance for the broadcast and any archive.
Music you created Confirm that you control the relevant rights in both the composition and recording, and that you have not transferred or exclusively licensed them in a way that conflicts with the stream.
Public-domain music YouTube identifies public-domain music as a safe category, but status can be complicated. Check the composition and the specific recording, including the rules in the territories where the stream is available.
Creative Commons or another open license Read the actual license. It may require attribution or limit commercial use. YouTube’s guidance says commercial use is permitted only when the license grants it; a license for one element does not grant rights in unrelated third-party material.
Third-party “royalty-free” libraries The label alone does not establish permission for a continuous live broadcast. Check the written license for YouTube live use, duration, territories, monetization, archives, and Content ID claims and allowlisting. YouTube says third-party licenses define where and how their music may be used.
Creator Music Not a live-stream license. YouTube says Creator Music does not support licensing for live content. Its availability is currently described as limited to U.S. YouTube Partner Program creators, with expansion elsewhere pending; a track licensed for an eligible uploaded video does not thereby become licensed for a live broadcast.

YouTube’s Audio Library and other sources are not a universal guarantee against every claim or interruption. Follow the terms for the specific track and use, and keep evidence of permission where applicable.

Common assumptions that do not clear music rights

  • “I bought the song.” A purchase or personal-use subscription does not by itself establish permission to broadcast the recording. Microsoft’s official streaming guidance likewise distinguishes personal-use access from permission to use content in a stream.
  • “I’ll credit the artist.” Attribution may be a license condition, but credit alone does not grant permission.
  • “I won’t monetize it.” Not monetizing a stream does not itself establish that the broadcast is authorized.
  • “It’s only a few seconds.” There is no automatic safe number of seconds established here.
  • “I’ll delete the replay.” YouTube scans the live broadcast while it is happening; deleting an archive does not undo live enforcement.
  • “Other channels use it.” Their rights, permissions, or platform arrangements may differ from yours.
  • “It’s fair use.” Fair-use and similar exceptions depend on jurisdiction and specific facts. No blanket conclusion can be made for a 24/7 music stream.

What to do if the stream is interrupted or claimed

  1. Read the YouTube notification. Identify whether YouTube reports a live match, interruption, termination, strike, or a claim on the completed archive. Do not assume these are the same issue.
  2. Check the exact track and rights coverage. Compare the recording, composition, territories, live duration, monetization, and archive against the written license.
  3. Verify Content ID allowlisting. If the use is licensed, contact the rights holder or authorized administrator and confirm that the correct YouTube channel was added. Keep the confirmation.
  4. Remove or replace material you cannot verify. Do not restart with the same track on the assumption that a warning will not recur.
  5. Use YouTube’s stated dispute or appeal process only when you have a valid basis. Retain your permission records and follow the instructions attached to the specific claim or enforcement action.

Or let it run in the cloud

For the streaming setup itself, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo handles delivery, not music clearance: use only audio whose rights cover your live broadcast and archive, and resolve any Content ID requirements with the rights holder. Start your free StreamNeo day.
