Raspberry Pi documents H.264 encoding up to 1080p30 on Pi 4. Pi 5 uses software video encoders, so Pi 4 has the clearer documented hardware-encoding path for this job. Either way, the result depends on the full playback-and-encoding setup, stable power and cooling, and a reliable upload connection. Test the exact system for a sustained period before relying on it for a long stream.
What determines whether frames drop?
A live stream has to keep producing correctly encoded video and audio while sending the data to YouTube. A Raspberry Pi can fail to keep pace if encoding load exceeds what it can sustain, if the connection cannot carry the outgoing bitrate reliably, or if power, heat, software, or another workload disrupts operation. A board’s published encoding capability is not a continuous-stream benchmark.
Raspberry Pi’s processor documentation lists H.264 encoding up to 1080p30 for Pi 4. Its camera documentation states that “Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders.” Pi 5 can encode in software, but sustained performance depends on resolution, frame rate, encoder settings, heat and power conditions, and competing work. Raspberry Pi’s performance note, updated 6 May 2026, compares specific Pi 5 software-encoding configurations with Pi 4 hardware encoding; it does not certify a general 24/7 streaming setup.
Pi 4 or Pi 5 for this job?
| Board | Encoding basis | What that means for a pre-recorded stream |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 4 | Officially listed H.264 encode capability up to 1080p30. | The better-documented choice when the Pi itself must encode H.264. The capability does not guarantee uninterrupted long-duration operation. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 | Software video encoders, according to Raspberry Pi documentation. | Can encode in software, but the sustainable target depends on the complete configuration and workload. Do not assume it has a hardware H.264 encoder. |
Choose based on the resolution and frame rate you actually need, the source file and encoder pipeline, measured upload capacity, and how you will monitor and recover the stream—not on model number alone.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. For an initial Pi test, a conservative 720p30 or 1080p30 target is easier to assess than starting with a higher frame rate.
| H.264 output target | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube listed minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a promise that a particular Pi can encode the source at that rate or that your internet connection can sustain it. If the Pi or upload connection struggles, lower the resolution or bitrate and test again. Use an encoder that exposes the required codec, CBR, keyframe interval, and audio settings; exact menus and commands depend on the software and operating-system build you install.

Prepare and test the complete setup
- Choose a target and inspect the source. Start with a supported H.264 output such as 720p30 or 1080p30, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and compatible AAC or MP3 audio. Use the actual pre-recorded file and check that its motion and audio are representative of the stream you intend to run.
- Measure upload where the Pi will operate. Test upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% bandwidth headroom above the total outgoing stream load. A speed test is a snapshot; repeat or observe the connection under representative conditions if it varies.
- Protect the stream key. Enter the YouTube stream key only in the encoder or streaming software that needs it. Do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it in a public log. Prefer RTMPS when the encoder supports it.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream. Use the Pi, power supply, cooling, network path, source file, and software you plan to use. Watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages for encoding or connectivity warnings rather than assuming that a successful start means the stream is healthy.
- Test duration and recovery. Let the setup run long enough to expose problems that a short start-up check would miss. Monitor the Pi and YouTube stream health. If the event cannot tolerate interruption, test a backup encoder and failover before the event; YouTube’s guidance describes stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet to check whether the player rolls over to the backup.
- Check local recordings if you make one. If the encoder also archives locally, confirm that the archive grows as expected and is playable. A healthy-looking live preview does not by itself verify a local recording.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
A technically stable stream is not automatically permitted to run. Before looping a documentary or other recording, make sure you have the necessary rights to stream its video and audio on YouTube. Also consider whether a repetitive or reused-video channel meets YouTube’s applicable channel and monetization policies. This is separate from encoder health: passing a technical test does not establish copyright permission or policy eligibility.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube reports unstable connection or stream health: Check sustained upload capacity at the Pi’s location, reduce the outgoing bitrate or resolution, and restore YouTube’s recommended headroom. Download speed alone does not diagnose an upload bottleneck.
- Frames are skipped or the Pi cannot keep pace: Lower the target resolution or frame rate and retest the actual file and encoder pipeline. On Pi 5, software encoding load is especially configuration-dependent; on Pi 4, the documented 1080p30 capability is not a guarantee for every source or setup.
- The stream starts but drops later: Check for changes in network reliability, power, cooling, system workload, or software behavior over time. A brief successful test is not evidence of sustained reliability.
- The stream stops after YouTube disconnects: Verify the encoder’s restart behavior and test recovery deliberately. For important events, configure and exercise a backup path rather than presuming automatic failover.
- Audio or video does not appear as expected: Confirm that the encoder is sending H.264 with compatible AAC or MP3 audio and that the source is actually playing through the selected pipeline. Inspect YouTube’s preview and health messages.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining a Pi, its power and cooling, the encoder software, and the home upload connection is more work than you want, StreamNeo runs an uploaded video or playlist as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the uploaded video rather than broadcasting from a camera. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot, and the service can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
