Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Yes—but only if the VPS can sustain the stream’s outbound bitrate and the workload you choose, and you are prepared to monitor and recover it. A simple loop of compatible, prerecorded video is a more plausible fit for a budget server than continuously encoding complex or live video. No universal minimum VPS size or guaranteed uptime can be established from the available evidence.
What determines whether a VPS can keep the stream going?
A continuous YouTube stream depends on more than whether FFmpeg starts successfully. The server must keep producing valid video, send it at a steady rate, stay within the provider’s resource and traffic rules, and recover when a process or connection fails.
- Encoding workload: Re-encoding video continuously uses CPU. A loop that can send compatible, already encoded media without re-encoding may need substantially different compute resources. No source establishes a minimum vCPU or RAM specification for a particular quality target.
- Network capacity: The VPS must sustain the selected upload bitrate, with some capacity beyond the nominal video rate to absorb variability. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate but does not specify a universal headroom factor.
- Transfer allowance: Continuous outbound video can consume a substantial amount of monthly data. Check the plan’s egress or transfer quota and the provider’s overage terms before choosing it.
- Operations and recovery: Someone must handle host maintenance, process supervision, failed output and restarts. A process that runs for hours is not proof that viewers have received uninterrupted video.
Choose a stream configuration YouTube supports
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include 3 Mbps for 720p30 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30. These are encoder and network recommendations, not hardware specifications for a VPS.
Use the target resolution and frame rate you actually intend to stream when estimating the sustained network load. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need for your server to send a stable input stream. YouTube also advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Monitor stream health once it is running rather than relying only on server CPU or process status.

How to test a low-cost VPS with a prerecorded loop
A 2026 setup guide from VPS provider Space-Node describes looping a file with FFmpeg and sending it to YouTube from a VPS. It is a useful example of a setup pattern, not an independent benchmark or proof that every low-cost plan can handle it. The example uses libx264, which encodes with CPU; your needs may differ if you can copy compatible pre-encoded media instead.
- Check the plan before deploying. Read its sustained CPU policy, outbound transfer quota, traffic terms, reboot and maintenance behavior, and support coverage. These details vary by plan; no universal low-cost tier or price is established here.
- Prepare compatible media. Confirm the file’s codec, resolution, frame rate and audio format. Decide whether your workflow will encode with libx264 or pass through compatible pre-encoded streams. Do not assume that a VPS suitable for pass-through can also re-encode at the same quality.
- Create a YouTube live stream and retrieve its stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream. Configure the encoder to use the ingest protocol and settings appropriate to the stream.
- Run a representative test on the intended plan. Test the exact codec, resolution, frame rate and content, including any audio, at the target bitrate. Observe CPU use, outbound bitrate, dropped or stalled output, and YouTube’s stream-health status. YouTube recommends testing before going live.
- Only then run the continuous loop. Use a supervisor or equivalent process-management approach to detect a stopped FFmpeg process and restart it where appropriate. Confirm that recovery works; a restart mechanism cannot fix every network, provider or YouTube-side problem.
Space-Node also describes an OBS-based VPS setup, which may suit a GUI workflow. The available evidence does not establish that OBS is more reliable or less resource-intensive than FFmpeg on a given plan.

What continuous operation does—and does not—guarantee
“Runs 24/7” describes an intended operating pattern, not a promise of uninterrupted playback. In an individual public project account, an intermittent packet or demuxer failure appeared after several hours even though local CPU, frame-count and bitrate metrics did not reveal it as a YouTube playback problem. That account is not a controlled reliability study, but it illustrates why process metrics alone are insufficient.
Automatic restart can restore some failed processes, but it cannot guarantee viewer-side continuity. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide describes sending a redundant second copy to a backup ingest URL. That is a separately configured redundancy design—not a capability inherent in one VPS—and it adds operational complexity.

VPS versus a managed cloud loop
A VPS can be a reasonable choice if you want to manage the encoder and host yourself. A managed service trades that hands-on control for less server administration. The right comparison is operational as well as technical:
| Consideration | Self-managed VPS | StreamNeo |
|---|---|---|
| What runs the stream | You configure and operate the host and encoder, such as FFmpeg or OBS. | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops uploaded video from the cloud. |
| Encoding and quality | Depends on your chosen workflow, server capacity and configuration. | Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers. |
| Recovery and administration | You handle supervision, host operations and recovery; a restart does not guarantee uninterrupted playback. | Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream; no home computer needs to stay on. |
| Cost basis | Server price plus any transfer overage; plan-specific costs and limits need checking. | One free day per account, with no card required. The same product is on every plan; only the billing length changes. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is #1 as the cloud option here: it keeps an uploaded YouTube video or playlist running from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. Upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Its first day is free with no card, and the monthly plan is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube reports unstable stream health: Check sustained outbound bitrate, encoder settings and whether the VPS has enough network capacity beyond the nominal video rate. Confirm the configured keyframe interval and bitrate mode.
- CPU usage is high or output stutters: Determine whether the process is re-encoding. The libx264 example consumes CPU; test the intended settings on the actual plan rather than assuming a generic VPS size will suffice.
- The stream stops after hours: Check FFmpeg logs and the host’s network and process logs. A live process or normal-looking local metrics do not prove YouTube playback is healthy. Configure supervision for recoverable process failures and verify the result at the viewer end.
- The VPS works initially, then traffic is limited or costs rise: Review the provider’s transfer allowance, overage terms and sustained-resource policy. These limits are plan-specific.
- A restart does not restore viewer playback: Check YouTube stream health and ingest configuration. A process restart cannot resolve every ingest or playback issue; redundant ingest requires a separately configured backup path.
