Yes. Having permission to use a video does not necessarily stop YouTube from detecting it during a livestream. YouTube advises creators who have licensed third-party content to ask the rights owner to add their channel to the owner’s Content ID allowlist. Permission defines what use the license authorizes; allowlisting helps prevent an automated match from disrupting the stream.
Why a permitted livestream can still be interrupted
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including other live broadcasts. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image and warn the creator to stop using the content. If the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream.
A license and a Content ID allowlist serve different purposes. The license is the rights holder’s authorization for uses within its scope. Allowlisting is a platform-side measure the owner can take to help prevent Content ID matching from interrupting a licensed stream. YouTube specifically recommends that creators with licensed third-party content ask the owner to allowlist their channel.
Restricting a stream to territories where you have rights does not, by itself, ensure that YouTube will not interrupt it if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel.

What to do before you go live
- Check the license scope. Confirm that it covers livestreaming on YouTube, the territories where viewers may watch, the dates or term of use, and any planned monetization or archived copy. These are practical points to verify; a license’s precise terms depend on the agreement.
- Ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel. Make the request before streaming. The owner or its Content ID administrator may need your channel details to add it. YouTube identifies allowlisting as the step for creators who have licensed third-party content.
- Keep written records. Retain the license, the owner’s confirmation of the permitted use, and any confirmation that your channel was added to the allowlist. These records can help you assess and explain a later claim.
- Have a fallback plan. If the stream is interrupted, stop using the matched material and contact the rights owner or its Content ID administrator. Do not assume that showing a license to viewers or limiting the audience by territory will prevent an automated interruption.
Live interruption and an archived-video claim are different
YouTube may act on a match while a stream is live. Separately, if you choose to archive the livestream, YouTube says Content ID claims on the archived stream are made after the stream is complete. A live interruption and a claim on the saved video are therefore distinct events, and one does not automatically mean the other will occur.
What a Content ID claim means
A Content ID claim may apply a policy to monetize, track, or block a video, and its effect can vary by territory. A claim is not the same as a copyright removal request or a copyright strike. A valid removal request can lead to the video being taken down and a strike being applied; a Content ID claim alone does not automatically give the creator a strike.

How to handle a claim on an archived stream
- Review the details in YouTube Studio. Check the claimant and the matched segment so you can compare the claim with the material and use covered by your license.
- Dispute only if your rights cover the use. YouTube lists having all necessary rights as a valid reason to dispute. A license that does not cover the matched material, platform, territory, or type of use may not support a dispute.
- Allow time for the claimant’s response. YouTube says the claimant is notified and generally has 30 days to respond. Depending on the response, the claim may be released, reinstated, or escalated into a removal request.
YouTube does not know which uses a creator has properly licensed and does not decide whether a particular license authorizes that use. Review the agreement and seek clarification from the rights owner if its scope is uncertain before disputing.
