The steps are to check the eligibility shown in YouTube Studio, apply to the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), pass the channel review, accept the relevant monetization module, and turn on the features you qualify for. Reaching a subscriber or viewing threshold is not approval, and approval does not guarantee earnings.
Choose the revenue route that fits your content
YouTube monetization is a set of separate features, not one switch. Availability depends on the feature, your country or region, and your channel’s eligibility. For a documentary channel, the best fit depends on whether viewers watch full-length films, follow live programming, return as a community, or want to support a particular project.

For long-form documentaries
Watch Page ads and YouTube Premium revenue are the relevant platform options for eligible long-form films. A documentary’s subject or length does not by itself make it monetizable: the video still has to comply with YouTube’s monetization and advertiser-friendly policies, and you need the necessary rights for every audio and visual element.
For live programs
YouTube’s live guidance identifies ad revenue, memberships, Shopping, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and Premium revenue as potential routes. Supers can suit a live audience that wants to participate in chat; memberships can suit viewers who value ongoing community perks. Super Thanks is for eligible published content, not a payment viewers can make while the stream is live.

Understand the two YPP eligibility levels
YouTube provides an earlier threshold for access to certain fan-funding and Shopping features in eligible regions, and a higher threshold for Watch Page and Shorts ad revenue. These figures are entry requirements, not earnings targets or a guarantee of acceptance. Confirm what applies to your channel in the Earn section of Studio; regional availability and feature requirements can differ.

YouTube says paid campaign views and watch time do not count toward these thresholds, except for qualifying follow-on views from organic viewing. Check the Earn page rather than using paid promotion to try to meet YPP requirements. YouTube’s monetization setup guidance.

Apply and activate monetization in YouTube Studio
- Check your channel and region. In YouTube Studio, open Earn and review the current eligibility and feature availability shown for your channel. YPP entry also requires compliance with channel monetization policies, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, access to advanced features, and an active AdSense for YouTube account linked or ready to set up through Studio. - Meet one qualifying activity route. You can qualify through the applicable long-form watch-hour route or the Shorts-view route. Shorts Feed watch time is not included in the 4,000-hour public watch-time threshold.
- Apply through Earn when eligible. Follow the application steps presented in Studio. YouTube reviews the channel as a whole; meeting the numbers does not automatically secure acceptance.
- Accept the module for each revenue type. In the Earn section, review and accept the relevant optional terms: the Watch Page Monetization Module for eligible long-form and livestream Watch Page ads and Premium revenue; the Shorts Monetization Module for Shorts Feed ad sharing; and the Commerce Product Module for fan funding.
- Switch on individual features. After acceptance, activate the features available to your channel, such as ads or fan-funding tools. Enabling ads is not a promise that an ad will serve on every video or stream.
- Check each upload and stream. Review monetization status and any suitability or rights issues in Studio. A feature may be available on the channel while particular content has limited or no ad earnings.
Follow content, copyright, and live-stream rules
YouTube applies monetization policies to Shorts, long-form videos, and livestreams. Content must meet channel monetization and advertiser-friendly requirements. Before enabling ads, make sure you have the necessary rights to all footage, photographs, music, narration, graphics, and other material used. A license or permission for one use does not necessarily establish rights for every use; check the actual terms covering your upload and monetization.
- Do not assume public availability means permission. Documentary archives, news clips, photographs, and music may remain protected even when easy to find online. Keep records of licenses and permissions that cover your intended use.
- Make your contribution clear. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to the channel as a whole and to its content. Reused or repurposed material can create monetization-policy problems if the channel does not meet YouTube’s requirements; adding a new title or minimal edits does not establish eligibility. - Expect suitability limits. Content can comply with copyright rules yet still receive limited or no ads under advertiser-friendly rules. Policy violations may lead to adjusted or withheld earnings or suspension from YPP. YouTube channel monetization policies.
- Check feature-specific rules. Supers, memberships, Shopping, and other features have separate eligibility, availability, and policy requirements. Read the relevant Studio information and feature guidance before promising perks or asking viewers to pay.
What the published revenue shares mean
YouTube’s partner earnings overview, reviewed in 2026, publishes these revenue shares. They describe the applicable revenue basis under the relevant module; they are not CPM or RPM figures, nor forecasts of what an individual channel will earn. The module agreements govern a creator’s terms.

These are YouTube’s published figures, not a promise that an eligible video will receive a particular number of views, ads, or dollars. Common monetization problems and what to check
- You meet the numbers but cannot join. Check the Earn page for region and feature availability, channel standing, required account security and advanced-features access, and whether AdSense for YouTube is linked or ready to set up. YPP reviews the whole channel after application.
- Ads are not appearing on every eligible upload. Turning on monetization does not guarantee ads will serve. Check the video’s monetization status, advertiser-friendly suitability, and rights to its audio and visuals.
- Watch hours seem lower than expected. The 4,000-hour route uses qualified public watch hours over the past 12 months; Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward it. Paid campaign watch time does not count toward YPP thresholds, subject to YouTube’s stated exception for qualifying follow-on organic views.
- A live viewer cannot send Super Thanks. Super Thanks is not purchasable during a live stream or Premiere. Check whether an eligible archived long-form stream offers it after publication.
- A feature is missing from Studio. Check the channel’s Earn page and the feature’s regional and eligibility requirements. Feature availability is not universal and can change.
- Earnings are adjusted, limited, or withheld. Review the relevant monetization-policy notice, advertiser-friendly status, and rights documentation. YouTube says policy violations can affect earnings or YPP participation.
