A used office PC can host OBS Studio and send a continuous YouTube stream, but its age or business-PC label cannot tell you whether it will handle your church’s actual video setup—or keep running unattended around the clock. Check the exact hardware, operating system, workload, upload connection and recovery behavior, then test the complete setup before relying on it.
What “continuous” means for your church
A PC that can encode and send a stream during a test is not automatically a system proven to run without interruption 24/7. Continuous operation also depends on the PC’s condition, cooling, power, network stability, software updates and restarts, encoder recovery, and whether someone can monitor problems. YouTube and OBS do not specify a universal 24/7 reliability standard for an unspecified used PC.
First define what you want to stream. OBS on a PC can encode a production built from the church’s camera or switcher, audio, graphics and other inputs. By contrast, a service that loops uploaded recordings is prerecorded programming, not a live camera feed. These are different workflows, and a cloud playback service cannot replace the on-site camera and audio setup for a live service.
Check whether the used PC fits the production
Identify the actual specifications
Find the PC’s make and model, processor, graphics hardware, operating system and available hardware encoder. Confirm that the operating system is supported by the OBS release you plan to install. OBS lists Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its Windows requirements, but meeting compatibility requirements is only a starting point: OBS explicitly warns that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording.

Account for every part of the scene
Write down the real workload before judging the computer: camera inputs, capture device, overlays, graphics, audio sources, presentation software, resolution and frame rate. OBS’s CPU demands vary with encoder choice, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. A simple one-camera scene is not equivalent to a multi-source production with animated graphics and presentation capture.
Try hardware encoding when supported
OBS generally recommends hardware encoding when the exact PC has a supported encoder, because it moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. The encoder’s generation matters, though: older hardware encoders may produce lower image quality than newer ones at the same bitrate. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then assess the actual picture, dropped frames and system load rather than treating its suggested settings as proof of capacity.

Choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain
YouTube’s current H.264 live-encoder recommendations list a video bitrate of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are encoder settings, not measurements of the church’s connection or a guarantee that it is reliable. Choose based on the movement and detail in your stream as well as the sustained upload available at the installation site.
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total bitrate and warns that a network disruption can break a stream. Check upload capacity at the church over the connection you intend to use, ideally during busy network periods. Compare the available sustained upload with the stream’s total bitrate, including audio; do not assume a speed-test peak or a Wi-Fi connection will remain steady during a service. A wired connection may be a practical choice where it improves stability, but whether you need one depends on the site.

The figures are YouTube configuration recommendations, not a claim about what a particular church network can deliver. YouTube’s general advice that you do not need expensive equipment is encouragement to start with what you have—not assurance that every available PC can sustain your chosen stream.
Set up and test the stream before depending on it
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do this before the service or test window.
- Install a supported OBS release. Check that the PC’s operating system is supported by that version. Review its exact processor and graphics hardware rather than inferring performance from the PC’s age or office use.
- Build the real production scene. Connect the camera or switcher through the capture hardware you actually need, then add the intended audio, graphics and presentation sources. A capture card is only needed if the setup requires one and the PC lacks the needed input hardware.
- Configure the encoder and output. Set the intended resolution and frame rate, select a supported hardware encoder if appropriate, and choose a bitrate aligned with YouTube’s recommendations and your measured upload capacity. Treat OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, not a substitute for testing.
- Protect the stream key. Enter the YouTube stream key in OBS’s streaming configuration; do not show or share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update OBS with the replacement before going live.
- Run a private or unlisted test with representative content. Include the movement and sound expected in the actual production. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health, verify the event is accessible to the intended audience, and inspect audio and video quality while the PC is encoding.
- Test long enough to expose operational risks. Observe the PC’s load and behavior during a sustained run. Separately check its condition, cooling, power, network stability, response to OS updates or restarts, and how the encoder recovers if the connection drops. YouTube advises monitoring quality; its documentation does not certify a used computer for unattended continuous service.
- Decide who will respond. Establish who checks the stream and what they will do if YouTube reports a health problem, the PC restarts, or the internet connection fails. A successful initial test does not remove the need for an operational response plan.
Choose between a PC and a standalone encoder
YouTube supports both software encoders running on a computer and standalone hardware encoders. A PC running OBS may suit a church that already has a capable machine and needs a flexible production. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events; a dedicated device may better suit the church’s operating needs, but it does not remove the need to test cameras, audio, network and recovery procedures.

The relevant comparison is not simply “old PC versus new device.” Consider the actual scene complexity, available inputs, desired operating simplicity and whether the existing PC can sustain the chosen output. No specific used-PC model can be recommended without its specifications and a representative test.

- OBS installs, but the stream stutters or drops frames: Compatibility does not guarantee capacity. Reduce scene complexity or output demands, try a supported hardware encoder, and check sustained upload and headroom.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the Live Control Room status, encoder bitrate and network stability. YouTube notes that connectivity disruptions can break a stream; do not treat a bitrate adjustment as a fix for an unstable connection.
- The video looks worse than expected at the chosen bitrate: Confirm the resolution and frame rate, inspect the encoder in use, and account for its generation. OBS notes that older hardware encoder generations can give lower quality at the same bitrate.
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Verify channel eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live-streaming enablement.
- The stream stops after an update, restart or power interruption: Check the PC’s update and restart behavior, power arrangements and restart procedure. Do not assume the encoder will resume unattended without testing that recovery path.
- A camera does not appear in OBS: Check whether the camera or switcher output needs a capture device and whether the PC has the necessary input hardware. A separate capture card is not required in every setup.
