Google launched a BTS-themed Search Easter egg on July 8, 2022: searching for BTS could reveal a purple balloon that unleashed a screenful of balloons, including some with microphone icons that played messages from the group. It was a real ARMY Day promotion, but Google’s announcement does not promise it will remain available. In 2026, treat it as a feature to try—not one you can count on seeing.
How to try the BTS Google Search Easter egg
- Open Google Search or the Google app and search for BTS.
- Look on the results page for a purple balloon or a BTS-related interactive element.
- If it appears, click or tap it and watch for the balloon animation.
- Look for balloons marked with microphones. If available, selecting one plays a special audio message.
Google confirmed the search interaction and audio messages in its July 2022 announcement. Contemporary reporting described balloons filling the screen and individual balloons revealing written messages as well as audio. That account also said the interaction worked on desktop and mobile at the time; it is not a guarantee of compatibility today.
If the balloon is not there, that does not necessarily mean you searched incorrectly. The feature was part of a dated promotion, not a permanent Search setting, and its availability in 2026 is not established. Google may no longer surface it, or it may vary by region or Search interface.
Why Google made it
The Easter egg was part of Google and YouTube’s celebration of BTS and ARMY, the group’s fandom, around ARMY Day on July 9. Google published the promotion on July 8, 2022, ahead of the fandom’s ninth anniversary. The purple visuals were a recognizable nod to BTS and ARMY culture, though Google’s announcement does not formally explain the color choice.

The balloon was one small part of a wider collaboration. BTS x Street Galleries brought together Google Street View and Google Arts & Culture, inviting fans to explore places connected with the group and see artworks curated by RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, V, Jimin, and Jung Kook. Google highlighted locations including the United Nations in New York and the Chunggu Building in Seoul, alongside member photographs and creations.
YouTube also ran #MyBTStory, a Shorts challenge inviting fans to share memories of BTS. Google said selected fan submissions would be brought together in a tribute video. These projects were related campaign experiences, not steps required to activate the Search balloon.

If the balloon appears but there is no sound
First check the device volume and whether the browser tab is muted. If the interaction itself is present but does not respond, you could try a regular Google Search page rather than an embedded search box, or test another browser or the Google app. A script-blocking extension or restricted browser environment might also interfere, though these are possibilities rather than confirmed causes for this particular Easter egg.

The feature is mainly visual and audio-based. When it was available, the animation and written messages offered something to see even without playing the audio; the audio messages were an extra part of the experience.

The reliable fact is historical: Google launched this Easter egg in July 2022. The announcement and contemporaneous coverage explain how it worked then, but neither establishes that it is still active for every user—or any user—in 2026. Search for BTS and check, but if the purple balloon is missing, you have probably encountered a time-limited feature that is no longer being served, not a hidden setting you failed to find.
