After an initial proposal to dim only one theater per owner drew criticism, the Committee of Theatre Owners announced that all 41 Broadway theaters would take part in a marquee tribute. A public memorial followed at the St. James Theatre on December 2, and the marquees dimmed the next day.
How did Gavin Creel die?
The Broadway League said Creel died after a brief battle with cancer. Playbill reported that he was diagnosed in July 2024 with a rare, aggressive sarcoma, received treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering, and later transitioned to home hospice. Creel was 48.
The Broadway League’s September 30, 2024 announcement confirmed his death and described the loss as difficult to fathom. Its then-Interim President, Jason Laks, said, “It is hard to fathom the loss of Gavin Creel.”
What Broadway shows and awards defined Creel’s career?
Creel made his Broadway debut in Thoroughly Modern Millie. He earned Tony nominations for that show and for Hair, then won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for playing Cornelius Hackl in the 2017 revival of Hello, Dolly! His other Broadway credits included Into the Woods, Waitress, and She Loves Me. He also won an Olivier Award for The Book of Mormon.

Why did Broadway dim its lights for Gavin Creel?
Broadway’s marquee tribute became a public debate about how broadly to honor Creel. The initial plan was to dim the lights at one theater per owner. Actors’ Equity objected to a limited tribute, saying that “everyone who receives the tribute deserves the full tribute.” The AP reported that an online petition calling for every Broadway theater to participate had gathered more than 23,000 signatures.
The Committee of Theatre Owners then announced that all 41 Broadway theaters would dim their marquees. The change was from a limited, owner-by-owner plan to participation across the full Broadway theater group; it was an institutional response, distinct from the personal tributes shared by colleagues.

A public memorial celebration took place at the St. James Theatre on December 2, 2024, with livestream access announced for audiences in the United States and United Kingdom. Broadway marquees dimmed for Creel on December 3, 2024. Both events have passed.
In a tribute report, Playbill Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Alex Birsh offered a personal measure of Creel’s warmth: “There really are only two categories: those who loved Gavin, and those who hadn’t had the chance yet.” It was Birsh’s tribute, not a claim that every artist or fan responded in the same way.
Playbill’s tribute coverage collected colleagues’ remembrances. The Broadway League’s notice about the December marquee dimming recorded the community’s formal tribute to the Tony Award-winning actor.
