What is Hellboy: The Crooked Man about?
Set in 1950s Appalachia, the film follows Hellboy and Bobbie Jo Song, a rookie agent of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD). After a mission goes wrong, they find themselves in a rural community haunted by witches and the Crooked Man, a sinister local figure. The story’s central appeal is its folk-horror setting: an isolated community, supernatural threats and a smaller-scale conflict rather than a fight framed around saving the world.
The official trailer description says Song is initially tasked with delivering a spider and seeks Hellboy’s help after events go wrong. Jack Kesy plays Hellboy, Adeline Rudolph plays Bobbie Jo Song and Jefferson White plays Tom Ferrell. Brian Taylor directs; the official trailer credits Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden as writers.
Is it worth watching?
Consider it if the idea of Hellboy investigating witches and demons in rural Appalachia sounds more appealing than a standard comic-book action spectacle. Its strong horror and suspense content also makes it a more natural fit for viewers comfortable with supernatural menace than for anyone seeking a light, broadly accessible franchise adventure.

The aggregate response is mixed rather than a clear endorsement. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2026 snapshot showed a 40% Tomatometer based on 42 critic reviews and a 49% Popcornmeter based on more than 500 ratings; critic reviews and audience ratings reflect different groups, and both totals can change. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus called the result “an uneven, third-rate bag of all tricks and no treats.” By contrast, Kim Newman wrote in a Sight & Sound review dated December 18, 2025, “It respects its source to a high degree – actors are cast (or made up) exactly to resemble Corben’s grotesque faces – and at least manages to evoke proper dread.” These views point to the film’s central divide: its comic-inspired horror approach may work for some viewers while leaving others unconvinced.
How frightening is the film?
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) lists a runtime of 99 minutes 4 seconds and describes strong horror and suspense. Its content description includes witches, demons, revenants, a fantastical snake and a giant spider. That makes the BBFC entry a useful check for viewers choosing a film for a group or deciding whether its horror elements suit them.
Where can you watch it?
Digital storefront search results have listed the film for rent or purchase on Prime Video, and Apple TV has a film listing. Search results have also surfaced DVD and Blu-ray formats. Listings and availability depend on country and can change, so check the storefront in your territory for the current option and price. October 8, 2024, was reported as a digital release date in a historical viewing guide; it is release-history context, not a statement of present availability.

The film draws on Hellboy’s supernatural folklore, and Mike Mignola is credited as a writer alongside Christopher Golden in the official trailer description. That credit is relevant to readers interested in the connection between the movie and the comics, but it does not by itself establish how easily the film works for someone unfamiliar with Hellboy. Penguin Random House’s February 2026 catalog lists Hellboy Library Volume 4: The Crooked Man and the Troll Witch, a 312-page hardcover at a listed price of $59.99. Check the edition’s contents and current price before buying it as a route to the story.
