On 11 August 2024, William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, shared an Instagram video congratulating Team GB on its Paris Olympics achievements. William wore an official Team GB Olympics polo and had a beard. This was his first public appearance with a beard in the episode covered here, not the first time he had ever worn facial hair; earlier beard appearances were also reported, including one in 2008. September 2024: a public engagement
On 5 September, William wore the beard during a visit to the Homelessness: Reframed exhibition at London’s Saatchi Gallery. Sky News described the August video as the beard’s first public appearance in this latest run. Sky News covered the visit and the earlier video.
What Harry said about the 2018 wedding
In Spare, Harry said that before his 2018 wedding he asked Queen Elizabeth II for permission to keep his beard. He recounted that William objected, with the military uniform Harry planned to wear forming part of the context described in coverage. Harry said the discussion grew heated and continued for more than a week. Sky News quoted Harry’s account: “At one point he actually ordered me, as the heir speaking to the spare, to shave.”

Those details, including Harry’s description of William’s words and the length and tone of the disagreement, should be understood as Harry’s account. The Daily Beast reported that William’s friends disputed Harry’s characterization of events generally and included unnamed sources defending William’s objection. The reporting does not establish William’s private motive independently. The Daily Beast discussed the dispute and the differing accounts; Sky News’s coverage also quotes Harry from Spare.
Why the 2024 beard brought the story back
William’s new look prompted coverage that linked his beard to Harry’s earlier memoir account. The chronology matters: the disagreement Harry described concerned his own wedding in 2018; William’s public beard appearances in this story took place in 2024. The later beard does not confirm Harry’s account or reveal why William objected at the time.

In remarks reported from Cape Town on 8 November 2024, William said Princess Charlotte had disliked the beard when he first grew it, so he shaved it off before growing it back. The Standard quoted him: “Charlotte didn’t like it the first time. I got floods of tears the first time I grew a beard, so I had to shave it off.” This was William’s explanation for shaving his own first beard; it is separate from Harry’s account of the 2018 disagreement.
