Spoilers for the 2025 film. Bridget chooses Scott Wallaker, her son Billy’s science teacher—not Roxster. Roxster returns and asks to rekindle their relationship, but Bridget declines. After Scott admits his feelings, Bridget kisses him, and the film’s one-year-later New Year’s Eve gathering shows him at home with Bridget and her family and friends. Mark remains part of Bridget’s life through memory; moving forward does not mean forgetting him.

How Bridget and Scott get together

Scott’s connection with Bridget grows partly through his support for Billy, who is grieving his father, Mark. Scott encourages Billy to honor Mark at the school’s Christmas recital. The performance helps Bridget see that she and her children can take steps forward while still remembering Mark.

Later, Scott hesitates to join Bridget and her friends at a bar. She follows him into the snowy street, where he says he has feelings for her but has worried about the timing. Bridget kisses him. When he tells her she can call him Scott, the exchange marks the start of their relationship.

Why Bridget turns down Roxster

Roxster represents a joyful return to desire and a romance outside Bridget’s usual age range. But he voices concern about their age gap and then ghosts her. When he comes back and asks to try again, Bridget has become more secure and turns him down kindly.

Scott’s role is different: he has built a bond with Bridget’s children, especially Billy, and recognizes that Bridget’s grief for Mark continues. The film does not frame her decision as a contest to find someone who replaces Mark. It presents a new relationship as compatible with keeping his memory close.

What the owl means—and what it does not prove

At the New Year’s Eve gathering a year later, Bridget, Billy, and Mabel see the owl associated with Mark. Scott sees it too. The film leaves the owl’s exact meaning open rather than confirming a supernatural visitation.

Director Michael Morris said he did not want to put too many labels on the owl, leaving viewers room to form their own associations. He acknowledged its strong connection to Mark for viewers and described the film as “a comedy about letting go.” That supports reading the owl as a reminder of Mark’s continuing emotional presence, not as proof that he has literally returned.

What the final scene says about Bridget’s future

The one-year-later gathering places Scott within Bridget’s household and wider circle of family and friends. Morris described the scene as surrounding Bridget with both biological and chosen family, and said he wanted viewers to leave feeling that she would be okay. The scene offers a hopeful future; it does not promise marriage or establish what happens in a further sequel.

The final image echoes an earlier moment when Bridget needed help unzipping a dress: Scott helps her. The callback conveys that she is no longer alone, while the owl keeps Mark’s memory present. The film’s ending makes room for both.

Film ending, not novel ending

This explanation concerns the 2025 film adaptation. Universal’s official synopsis describes Bridget as a widowed single mother balancing work, parenting, and romance, including encounters with a younger man and her son’s science teacher. The film is based on Helen Fielding’s novel, but the ending explained here is the film’s resolution; it should not be treated as a summary of the novel’s ending.
