Bridget Jones 4 plot: what happens?
Spoiler warning: The following premise details reveal a major change to Bridget’s life.

The film begins four years after Mark Darcy was killed while on a humanitarian mission in Sudan. Bridget is now raising their children, 9-year-old Billy and 4-year-old Mabel, with help from her family, friends, and Daniel Cleaver.
Bridget has become stuck in an emotional limbo. Her social circle encourages her to move forward, and she eventually returns to work and experiments with dating apps. That leads to a relationship with Roxster, a younger man, while Bridget also has increasingly awkward interactions with Mr. Walliker, her son’s rational and science-focused teacher.

The resulting story brings together several pressures that the earlier films approached differently: grief after losing a long-term partner, the practical demands of single parenthood, workplace expectations, judgment from other parents, and the uncertainty of dating later in life. As in the previous films, the romance is surrounded by embarrassment and comedy, but the central question is whether Bridget can build a future without treating her past as something she must simply erase.
What happened to Mark Darcy?
Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth, is dead before the main events of Mad About the Boy begin. The film establishes that he was killed four years earlier on a humanitarian mission in Sudan.
That decision changes the shape of the franchise. Mark is not a competing presence in a conventional love triangle; instead, his absence drives Bridget’s grief and explains why returning to romance is emotionally difficult. It also makes the film’s story about moving forward rather than simply repeating the Bridget-Mark-Daniel dynamic from the earlier movies.
How Daniel Cleaver returns
Hugh Grant returns as Daniel Cleaver, Bridget’s former lover and one of the series’ longest-running sources of romantic and comic trouble. In this film, Daniel’s relationship with Bridget is redefined by her widowhood and single parenthood. Peacock’s launch material describes him as helping Bridget despite their complicated history.
His presence gives the film a direct connection to the original trilogy, but Mad About the Boy does not place Bridget back in exactly the same romantic circumstances as before. Daniel is now part of the support system around Bridget and her children as well as a reminder of her past.
Roxster and Mr. Walliker: Bridget’s new romantic choices
The film contrasts two very different possibilities for Bridget. Roxster, played by Leo Woodall, is the younger man she meets through her attempt to date again. Mr. Walliker, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, is a science teacher connected to Bridget’s son’s school.

Mr. Walliker is introduced as more rational and grounded, although Bridget’s interactions with him are no less awkward. Their contrast gives the film its central new romantic tension without ignoring the practical complications of Bridget’s family life.
Is the film based on a book?
Yes. The movie is based on Helen Fielding’s novel Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, first published in 2013. Penguin Random House lists a U.S. paperback edition published on June 3, 2014, at 496 pages; the ebook and audiobook editions originated in October 2013.
The novel supplies the title and the broad setup involving widowhood, children, and Bridget’s return to dating. However, readers should distinguish between “based on the novel” and “identical to the novel.” The film adapts the central premise while making its own choices about characters, events, and presentation.
If you want to compare the source material with the movie, read Helen Fielding’s Mad About the Boy novel first or use it as a post-film comparison. It is the book, not a movie tie-in edition or screenplay.
Is Bridget Jones 4 the final movie?
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy has been marketed and widely described as the fourth and final Bridget Jones film. ABC News described it as the fourth and final movie, while TheWrap reported the same positioning around its release.
“Final” is best understood as the franchise’s current official positioning, not an irreversible guarantee that no future Bridget Jones story could ever be made. Renée Zellweger has expressed affection for the character, and the character’s cultural life is not necessarily over. Nevertheless, as of August 11, 2026, no official fifth-film title, cast, production start, release date, or trailer had been announced in the reviewed Working Title, Peacock, and distributor materials.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Mad About the Boy fits into the series
- Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001): Bridget’s original romantic and professional misadventures establish the central characters and tone.
- Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004): The sequel continues Bridget’s relationship complications and insecurities.
- Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016): Bridget faces a new period of romantic uncertainty and the possibility of becoming a mother.
- Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025): Bridget is a widow and single mother who begins rebuilding her life and considering romance again.
You can watch the fourth movie without having recently revisited every earlier installment, but familiarity with Mark Darcy, Daniel Cleaver, Bridget’s parents, and her friends makes the emotional history—and several returning-character appearances—more meaningful.
What is the latest Bridget Jones news?
The important update is that Mad About the Boy is no longer an upcoming release. It has already premiered, is currently listed on Peacock in the United States, and has completed its initial international theatrical and home-media rollout.
Current coverage is therefore more useful when it explains the film’s cast, Mark’s death, the Roxster–Walliker romantic contrast, the differences between the movie and Fielding’s novel, and the uncertain future of the franchise. Articles that still describe the film as “coming soon” or call its November 2024 trailer “new” are out of date.
