That order lets you meet Saul Goodman in the original series before the prequel fills in his past, and it places Jesse Pinkman’s immediate post-series story where it belongs. If you want a closer approximation of in-universe chronology instead, pause Better Call Saul after Season 6, Episode 9.
What order should you watch them in?
Recommended for a first viewing: story-first order
- Breaking Bad — watch the complete series.
- El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie — watch after the series.
- Better Call Saul — watch the complete series, including its final-season overlap with Breaking Bad and its later Gene story.
This is a practical recommendation, not an official mandate. It preserves the original introduction to Saul Goodman and gives Jesse’s continuation its natural place before you watch the series that looks back at Saul’s life.
For a closer in-universe chronology
- Watch Better Call Saul from Season 1 through Season 6, Episode 9, “Fun and Games.”
- Watch all of Breaking Bad.
- Watch El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.
- Return to Better Call Saul at Season 6, Episode 10, “Nippy,” and continue through the finale.
This season-level split accounts for the final season’s shift into the Breaking Bad period and then the later Gene material. It is a useful chronology guide, not an official scene-by-scene viewing sequence; there is no need to interrupt individual episodes to make the timeline work.
Why the two orders are different
Better Call Saul begins as a prequel about Jimmy McGill’s path toward becoming Saul Goodman. When AMC introduced the series, it described the story as taking place six years before Saul met Walter White. AMC’s original series announcement establishes that starting point.

But the show does not remain entirely in the prequel period. Its final season returns to events that overlap Breaking Bad, then follows Gene, Saul’s later identity, after those events. In an AMC interview published August 16, 2022, co-creator and executive producer Peter Gould described the Gene material this way: “It’s the sequel when the rest of the show has been a prequel to Breaking Bad.”
That structure explains why watching every episode of Better Call Saul before Breaking Bad is not a fully chronological route: the end of the prequel eventually moves into both the original show’s timeframe and its aftermath.

Where does El Camino fit?
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie continues Jesse Pinkman’s story after his escape from captivity, so watch it after the complete Breaking Bad series. AMC’s announcement introduced the film as a continuation of Jesse’s journey and scheduled its television premiere after a full Breaking Bad marathon.
In the chronology option, the film also comes after Breaking Bad and before you resume Better Call Saul at “Nippy.”

Which order should you choose?
| Option | Sequence | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Story-first first watch | Breaking Bad → El Camino → Better Call Saul | Viewers who want the original series’ introduction to Saul, followed by Jesse’s continuation and then Saul’s backstory. |
| Practical chronology | Better Call Saul S1–S6E9 → Breaking Bad → El Camino → Better Call Saul S6E10–S6E13 | Viewers who prioritize the in-universe timeline and do not mind pausing a season. |
Neither sequence is an officially prescribed franchise order. The chronology option is a practical season-level arrangement of the shows’ timelines, rather than a definitive reconstruction of every scene.
