Spoilers for Bridgerton Season 3, Episodes 1–4. Colin and Penelope kiss in a carriage after he confesses his feelings, then Colin proposes. Part 1 ends before Penelope answers: his question—“For God’s sake, Penelope Featherington. Are you going to marry me or not?”—is the cliffhanger.
What happens in the carriage?
After the queen’s ball, Penelope leaves upset because Colin has disrupted her near-engagement to Lord Debling. Colin follows her into the carriage and admits that his feelings for her have become overwhelming. Penelope tells him she wants more than friendship, and they kiss.
When the carriage reaches its destination, Colin asks Penelope to marry him. The episode cuts off before she responds, so viewers do not see her accept or refuse during Part 1.
Why does Colin propose?
The proposal follows Colin’s last-minute realization that his feelings for Penelope are romantic, not merely friendly. At first, he offers to help her find a husband as a friend. But Penelope’s effort to secure a practical match with Debling makes the stakes immediate: Colin intervenes at the ball, and the resulting hurt leads to the carriage conversation.

The scene changes the terms of their relationship. Colin states his feelings plainly, and Penelope reciprocates. His proposal is both a romantic payoff to that shift and an unresolved question at the midseason break.
Does Penelope say yes?
Part 1 does not show her answer. The finale ends on Colin’s proposal, making the response a cliffhanger rather than a resolved engagement within Episodes 1–4.

What remains unresolved after the proposal?
Even if Colin and Penelope move toward marriage, Penelope’s identity as Lady Whistledown remains a major complication. Netflix’s season guide identifies that secret as a source of conflict for the couple in the back half of the season. The proposal changes their relationship, but it does not settle that problem.
Why is Episode 4 the Part 1 cliffhanger?
Netflix split Season 3 into two batches of four episodes; Episode 4, “Old Friends,” closes the first batch. Showrunner Jess Brownell described the structure as an eight-episode season in which Episode 4 ends on a “big world-shifting midpoint.” Colin’s proposal gives that midpoint a decisive romantic turn while leaving Penelope’s answer—and the Whistledown secret—unresolved.

How does the carriage scene connect to the book?
The scene is adapted from Julia Quinn’s Romancing Mister Bridgerton, the fourth novel in the Bridgerton series. Netflix says the adaptation retains the shape of the book’s moment while adjusting it for television. Brownell described the scene’s emotional quality this way: “There’s joy there. It’s a powerful thing to show on television — that intimacy can mean comfort, joy, and friendship.”
That emphasis helps explain why the scene is more than a sudden proposal: it turns the history of friendship into mutual romantic intimacy, then ends on the question of what comes next.
