The business began as Pacific Video in 1990, became a Blockbuster franchise in 2000, and endured as corporate locations disappeared. Visitors can still browse and rent movies, but should confirm opening hours and rental details before making the trip.
How did one Blockbuster survive?
From Pacific Video to a local franchise
Ken and Debbie Tisher moved to Bend in 1990 and opened their first Pacific Video location that December. The family expanded to other Central Oregon locations, including the site now identified as 211 NE Revere. After a decade operating locally, the Tishers and their partners converted the stores to Blockbuster franchises in June 2000, according to the store’s official history and the Oregon Encyclopedia.
That distinction matters: Bend was not a corporate outlet that remained under Blockbuster’s direct ownership. In 2018, general manager Sandi Harding told Oregon Public Broadcasting that the local business licensed the Blockbuster name from Dish Network and operated separately from the defunct corporate chain. Harding said it could not retrieve old customer accounts or accept returns for discs rented from other stores. Those details describe the arrangement she discussed at the time, not necessarily current rental policy.
A chain undone by changing ways to watch
At its 2004 peak, Blockbuster had more than 9,000 U.S. locations, the Oregon Encyclopedia reported in its entry updated June 30, 2022. The company faced competition from DVD-by-mail services such as Netflix, Redbox kiosks, video-on-demand and the shift toward streaming. Dish Network bought the struggling company in 2011 for $320 million, according to the Oregon Encyclopedia, but an attempted streaming service did not restore the chain. Corporate stores closed, and licensed franchises dwindled.

Two Alaska stores closed in 2018, leaving Bend as the last Blockbuster in the United States. When the remaining international location closed in 2019, Bend became the last in the world, as described in the historical accounts from the Oregon Encyclopedia and OPB. The precise status can change, so “last” is best understood as the store’s documented distinction in those reports and its own description, not a guarantee about future locations.
Why is the Bend store still here?
There is no single business statistic that explains its survival. In OPB’s July 14, 2018 report, Harding pointed to local loyalty and visitors who came to see the store for themselves. She recalled people arriving “almost daily” to exclaim, “Oh my gosh! There’s a Blockbuster,” ask how it was still open and take photographs outside.

The store also kept offering the activity that defined a video rental shop: choosing a movie in person and taking it home. Tourism adds another reason to stop. Visit Central Oregon’s guide, published February 2, 2024, describes the shop as both a local business and an attraction, with movie rentals, memorabilia, candy and souvenirs.
Merchandise contributes to the store’s support, but the evidence for that claim comes from the business itself. Its official About page says product-sale proceeds go directly toward supporting the store and that most products are made in Bend. That is the store’s own description, not an independently audited breakdown of its income.

What can visitors do there?
Browse and rent movies
Visit Central Oregon reports that customers can rent DVDs and Blu-rays to watch back at a hotel or other lodging. Bring or verify access to a player that supports the format you choose; a DVD player will not necessarily play Blu-ray discs. The guide does not provide an exhaustive current catalog or rental terms, so ask the store about available titles, prices, due dates and equipment compatibility before relying on a rental.
See the store and shop for souvenirs
A visit offers the familiar video-store setting as well as branded merchandise and memorabilia. The official homepage, accessed October 8, 2026, displayed a movie catalog and products including apparel and a coin bank. Online stock and prices can change, so check the official site for current listings rather than treating any displayed item as guaranteed in-store inventory.

Check before you travel
Visit Central Oregon’s 2024 guide describes the store as open year-round, but that does not establish a current schedule for a particular day. The accessible official homepage confirms an active web presence, not that the doors are open at a specific time. Verify the day’s hours and operating status directly with the store before setting out.

The Bend Blockbuster is more than a surviving sign from the video-rental era: it is a locally operated business whose franchise model, customer loyalty and appeal to travelers helped it outlast the corporate chain. For documentary viewers, the store is also the subject of a remote story as well as a physical place to visit. The official history page points to the documentary The Last Blockbuster; watching it offers a way to encounter the shop’s story without traveling to Bend.
