Its conspicuously edited appearance and “MIA” caption were widely interpreted by contemporary outlets as a joke about the scrutiny surrounding Catherine, Princess of Wales, and an edited royal family photograph. Lively did not name Catherine in the caption.
What was in Blake Lively’s Betty Buzz photo?
Lively posted a poolside promotional image on March 15, 2024, to announce four new products associated with her beverage brands, Betty Buzz and Betty Booze. News reports described the image as an intentionally poor edit, including Lively’s head placed on another body and visible image artifacts. It was a brand promotion, not an unrelated personal photograph. Us Weekly and The Independent covered the post.
Us Weekly reproduced Lively’s Instagram caption as: “I’m so excited to share this new photo I just took today to announce our 4 new @bettybuzz & @bettybooze products! Now you know why I’ve been MIA.” The original post was later reported as deleted, so the caption is available here as reproduced by the outlet rather than as a currently viewable post.
Why did people connect it to Kate Middleton?
The timing and visual joke invited comparison with the public discussion about Catherine’s whereabouts and a Mother’s Day family photograph released by Kensington Palace. The image drew scrutiny over edits; Catherine said she had experimented with editing and apologized for the confusion the photograph caused. Contemporary coverage read Lively’s conspicuously edited promotional image and “I’ve been MIA” line as a joke about that episode and the speculation around Catherine’s absence. That connection is an interpretation reported by outlets, not an explanation Lively gave in the caption. ELLE reported Catherine’s editing statement and the context.

What did Blake Lively say afterward?
On March 22, after Catherine announced her cancer diagnosis, Lively apologized in an Instagram Story. ELLE reproduced her wording: “I made a silly post around the ‘photoshop fails’ frenzy, and oh man, that post has me mortified today. I’m sorry. Sending love and well wishes to all, always.” Her apology acknowledged the post and its timing; it did not change the fact that the original promotional caption had not directly named Catherine. ELLE’s report covered the apology.
