“Black John Cena” is the social-media nickname for Brendan Cobbina, a UK-based bodybuilder and trainer whose resemblance to wrestler John Cena became a meme in August 2021. Cena amplified the joke by reposting Cobbina’s photo without a caption, and fellow wrestler R-Truth joined in. In November 2025, wrestling-news outlets reported that Cobbina and Cena met in person.
Who is Black John Cena?
He is Brendan Cobbina, not a WWE character or an alternate identity for John Cena. Cobbina is a UK-based bodybuilder and trainer. A 2021 profile said friends had called him “Black John Cena” before the meme reached a broad audience, and described his work at the time as including face-to-face sessions and online training. Those details are historical; they do not establish what services he offers now. Hollywood Mask’s 2021 profile covers that background.
How did the Black John Cena meme go viral?
The photo that started the comparisons
On August 8, 2021, Cobbina posted a throwback photo of himself. He wrote, “Throwback to a photo. Yes I cropped all of my close friends and kept myself!” The image prompted users to compare his appearance with Cena. The available reporting does not establish who first used the nickname; early coverage also mentioned playful alternatives such as “Jamal Cena.” Wrestling Attitude’s August 10, 2021 report reproduces Cobbina’s post, while ABC17 News/CNN Newsource’s August 12, 2021 coverage describes the comparison and the nickname context.
Cena and R-Truth join the joke
John Cena reposted Cobbina’s photo to his verified Instagram account without a caption. CNN Newsource described the repost as an acknowledgment of the lookalike joke; it was not evidence that Cena coined the nickname. R-Truth added a playful response, posting a video of himself entering to Cena’s theme music. Wrestling Attitude reported that the trend had topped 22,000 tweets at the time of its August 10, 2021 article. That is a dated Twitter snapshot, not a current count or a measure of the meme’s total reach across platforms.

Did Black John Cena meet John Cena?
Yes, according to reports published on November 16, 2025. Fightful reported that Cobbina met Cena and shared a photo of them together; WrestlingNewsSource also reported the meeting and photo. These outlets establish the reported later milestone, rather than a primary event record. Fightful’s report and WrestlingNewsSource’s report both appeared that day.
What the nickname does—and doesn’t—mean
The nickname describes an internet lookalike joke centered on Cobbina’s resemblance to Cena. It does not identify an official WWE role, a character, or a separate John Cena. The story’s main documented beats are Cobbina’s August 2021 photo, the social-media reactions that followed, Cena’s uncaptioned repost, and the meeting reported in November 2025.
