Jerry Lawson led the Fairchild team that turned an Alpex prototype into the Channel F, a home console that reached stores in 1976 with programmable games on separate cartridges. Calling him the “creator of the video game cartridge” is familiar shorthand, but the more precise history recognizes both the prototype’s Alpex origins and Lawson’s engineering leadership.

Removable cartridges changed where games could reside
With the Channel F, game software could be held on a cartridge that users inserted into the console, rather than being fixed in the machine. That format made it possible to use separate games with the same console. The Smithsonian’s Allan Alcorn oral-history transcript also identifies Lawson’s work designing the Channel F and pioneering the commercial video-game cartridge.
-
His story includes the barriers Black engineers faced
The Strong says Lawson told Business Week in February 1984: “As a black man I was not going to get anywhere in the corporation.” The remark is part of the museum’s account of his career and the discrimination he encountered.

His papers preserve the development process
The Strong’s archival collection announcement describes three generations of Channel F prototype circuit boards, a console-case blueprint, game specifications—including Flying Saucer (later renamed Desert Fox), Torpedo Alley, and Math Quiz—and a Math Quiz prototype cartridge. The collection also includes a cartridge made for the television game show TV Powww! Those artifacts show the successive design work behind a commercial console, beyond what a finished machine alone can reveal.
What “creator of the video game cartridge” gets right—and what it leaves out
The phrase captures Lawson’s central place in the Channel F’s cartridge history, but it can imply a lone inventor or obscure the work that preceded Fairchild’s console. The available institutional accounts support a more specific description: an Alpex prototype came first, and Lawson led the Fairchild engineering team that developed it into the Channel F, released in 1976 with separate programmable cartridges.
That distinction keeps credit attached to the right contributions. Lawson’s leadership and engineering work helped bring cartridge-based play into a retail home console; the development was a team effort built on an earlier prototype.
