Christopher Miller, the writer-producer associated with the Spider-Verse trilogy, said on June 1, 2024, that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse contains no generative AI—and never will. His response followed reported comments from Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra about using artificial intelligence to make film and television production more efficient. But the story requires an important distinction: Miller rejected generative AI, not necessarily every machine-learning or automated tool used in animation.
What Christopher Miller said
Miller was responding to a fan who publicly asked Sony to keep generative AI out of the next Spider-Verse film. In his June 1, 2024 post, Miller said there was no generative AI in the film and that there never would be.
He also gave an artistic reason for the position. The Spider-Verse films are built around creating distinctive visual styles, he argued, rather than producing an AI-generated average of existing artists’ work. That makes Miller’s statement both a production claim and a defense of the franchise’s artist-led identity.
Miller’s post should not be presented as a formal, studio-wide Sony policy. He was speaking publicly as a writer-producer associated with the project, and the statement specifically addressed Beyond the Spider-Verse.

- The "Spider-Man" trilogy features the three critically- acclaimed "Spider-Man" films directed by Sam Raimi. Follow Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) in these three adventures as he swings into action fighting super-villains Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Sandman and Venom and wins the heart of Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst).
Why the rumor began
The concern appears to have followed reported remarks by Sony CEO Tony Vinciquerra. Coverage from GameSpot, citing an IndieWire report, and Futurism described Vinciquerra as discussing Sony’s broader interest in using AI to make film and television production more efficient and less expensive.
Those reported comments concerned Sony’s general corporate strategy. They were not evidence that generative AI had been used in Beyond the Spider-Verse, nor did they announce an AI workflow for the film. Fans nevertheless connected the remarks to Sony Animation and the upcoming sequel, prompting the public question that Miller answered.
Generative AI is not the same as machine learning
The phrase “no AI” can be misleading because it treats several different technologies as one thing.

- Tom Holland stars as your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in three unforgettable adventures ? HOMECOMING, FAR FROM HOME, and NO WAY HOME.
- Generative AI creates new images, video, text, voices, or other content from prompts or learned patterns. In this context, it commonly refers to systems that generate creative material rather than merely helping organize or process existing work.
- Machine-learning assistance is a broader category. A trained system may help with tracking, interpolation, cleanup, line continuity, or another narrowly defined production task without autonomously creating a finished performance or shot.
- Conventional automation and procedural tools include software for simulation, rendering, compositing, and other repeatable processes. These tools may be sophisticated without being generative AI.
That distinction explains why Miller’s statement can coexist with reporting about machine-learning tools used on earlier Spider-Verse productions.

According to reporting by TheWrap and GameSpot, Sony Pictures Imageworks developed a machine-learning program to help track and maintain ink-line details across animated frames.
The technique addressed a specific challenge created by the films’ comic-book-inspired look. Ink lines and other graphic details have to remain coherent as a character moves from frame to frame. Reapplying and adjusting those details manually can be slow and repetitive, so software could assist with continuity and transfer.

- Average teenager Peter Parker is transformed into an extraordinary super hero after he is accidentally bitten by a radioactive spider. When his beloved uncle is savagely murdered during a robbery, young Peter vows to use his powers to avenge his death. Deeming himself "Spider-Man", he sets about ridding the streets of crime, bringing him into conflict with malevolent super-villain "Green Goblin."
The reported explanation described the system as an aid for human animators—not a replacement for their creative decisions. Animators still controlled expressions, movement, design, timing, and the overall visual direction. The existence of that kind of assistance in earlier films does not contradict Miller’s narrower promise about generative AI in the third film.
What Miller’s promise does—and does not—establish
Established by the public statement
- Miller said Beyond the Spider-Verse would not use generative AI.
- He made that statement on June 1, 2024, in response to a fan’s concern.
- He framed the decision as consistent with the franchise’s goal of developing original visual styles.
- Earlier Spider-Verse films were reported to have used narrow machine-learning assistance for ink-line continuity.
Not established by the statement
- That every algorithmic or machine-learning tool is prohibited on the production.
- That Sony has adopted a blanket ban on all AI-related software across its animation projects.
- That every vendor or subcontractor follows the same policy.
- A complete technical inventory of the film’s production software.
- Independent verification that the completed film contains no AI-assisted function of any kind.
The most accurate interpretation is therefore: Miller ruled out generative AI, but did not explicitly rule out every automated, procedural, or machine-learning process. That is a qualification of the wording, not a contradiction of his promise.

Why the issue matters to the Spider-Verse franchise
The controversy is not only about whether a particular tool is labeled “AI.” It is also about authorship and creative control. The Spider-Verse films are known for combining CG animation with comic-book effects, varied rendering approaches, hand-drawn-feeling marks, and deliberately different visual languages for different characters and worlds.

- Swing into action with eight Spider-Man films, including Spider-Man 1, 2 & 3 (starring Tobey Maguire), The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2 (starring Andrew Garfield), and Spider-Man Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home (starring Tom Holland).
That identity makes the franchise especially sensitive to fears that generative systems could flatten distinctive artistic choices into familiar or derivative-looking output. Miller’s response positioned generative AI as incompatible with the films’ stated ambition to invent new styles rather than imitate existing artists.
The discussion also sits within a wider Hollywood debate. During the 2023 labor disputes, writers, actors, animators, and visual-effects workers raised concerns about displacement, unauthorized training data, and the devaluation of human creative work. Miller’s statement addresses the film-specific question, but it does not resolve those broader issues involving copyright, labor protections, or Sony’s corporate plans.
The bottom line
Fans received a clear public promise from Christopher Miller that Beyond the Spider-Verse would not use generative AI. The careful reading is not “no software automation of any kind.” Earlier films reportedly used human-supervised machine-learning assistance for a technical animation task, while Miller’s denial targets generative systems that create or imitate creative content. Sony’s broader interest in production AI explains the concern, but it is not proof that generative AI was planned for this particular film.
