Spotify announced new measures against AI-enabled spam, unauthorized vocal impersonation, fraudulent artist-profile uploads and royalty manipulation on September 25, 2025. Within roughly a day, a suspicious track appeared on the page of Volcano Choir, the long-dormant project associated with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. Spotify removed it after reporters asked about the release.
That episode did not prove that every part of Spotify’s policy had failed. It did expose the central weakness: announcing detection and prevention tools is not the same as stopping misleading music before it reaches an artist page, search result or recommendation system.
The problem was not simply that AI music existed
Spotify’s announcement was widely understood as a response to “AI slop,” but that phrase needs precision. In this context, it means high-volume, low-accountability music created or distributed mainly to exploit platform economics, search visibility, playlists or royalty systems.
That is different from all AI-assisted music. An artist may use AI for production, lyrics, instrumentation or a licensed vocal without creating spam or deceiving listeners. A synthetic vocal is not automatically fraudulent, and a poor-quality song is not automatically unlawful. The more serious problem is the combination of synthetic content with mass uploading, impersonation, false attribution, recommendation manipulation or artificial streams.

Spotify’s stated position was not to ban AI music. It said responsible creative use should remain possible while unauthorized voice cloning, deceptive uploads and spam tactics are addressed.
What Spotify announced
| Measure | What it was intended to do |
|---|---|
| Unauthorized vocal impersonation | Remove AI voice clones and other unauthorized vocal impersonation unless the impersonated artist authorized the use. |
| Music-spam filter | Identify uploaders and tracks associated with mass uploads, duplicate or near-duplicate releases, search-engine-optimization manipulation, artificially short tracks and similar tactics. |
| Content-mismatch protection | Work with distributors to prevent releases from being delivered to the wrong artist profile, while improving review times and allowing artists to report mismatches before release. |
| AI credits | Support a DDEX standard for identifying where AI was used, including vocals, lyrics, instrumentation or post-production. |
Spotify said the spam filter would be rolled out conservatively to reduce wrongful penalties. That caution matters: a system looking for spam behavior is not necessarily an AI-audio detector. A human-made release can look abusive if it is duplicated or mass-uploaded, while a polished AI-generated song may evade a filter that primarily examines upload patterns.
Spotify also said it had removed more than 75 million spam tracks during the preceding 12 months. That figure is Spotify’s own claim, and it refers to spam tracks—not 75 million AI-generated songs. It demonstrates the scale of the platform’s existing moderation problem, but it does not independently establish how many AI-related uploads were removed or how much money was recovered.
Spotify’s announcement linked the problem to the financial growth of streaming. The company said total music payouts rose from $1 billion in 2014 to $10 billion in 2024. That creates an incentive for bad actors to upload large volumes of music or manipulate engagement. Spotify warned that spam can dilute the royalty pool and divert money from professional artists and songwriters, although the announcement does not quantify losses attributable specifically to AI.

The suspicious track was titled “Silkymoon Light” and appeared on the Spotify profile for Volcano Choir, a project that had been inactive for more than a decade. Reporting described robotic-sounding vocals and a questionable, glitch-like cover image, with no apparent connection to the actual musicians.

The track was widely characterized as AI-generated or AI-produced, but the available reporting does not establish an independent forensic analysis proving its origin. The stronger, safer conclusion is that it was visibly suspicious and apparently misattributed to a real, dormant artist project.
After reporters contacted Spotify, the company removed the release. Spotify attributed the incident to vulnerabilities in the complicated supply chain involving labels, distributors and streaming platforms. That explanation is important, but it also illustrates why the episode was damaging. The track did not need to remain online for months to create a problem. It only needed to appear on the wrong artist page.
Why removal is not prevention
The Volcano Choir case can be judged using four separate tests:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Identity verification: Was the uploader authorized to release music under the Volcano Choir name?
- Metadata integrity: Did the distributor and platform confirm that the release belonged on that particular artist profile?
- Pre-release review: Were the project’s inactivity, unusual artwork and apparent mismatch examined before publication?
- Containment and recourse: If the release went live, how quickly could it be removed, and how easily could the real artist report it?
Spotify succeeded at the final step after journalists raised the issue. That is a reactive success, not evidence of successful prevention. A dormant or lesser-known artist may not be monitoring Spotify every day, and a suspicious track could appear in search, algorithmic recommendations or playlists before anyone notices.
The incident therefore does not conclusively disprove Spotify’s new systems. The company may not have fully deployed every announced tool when the upload appeared, and the release may not have passed through the new checks. But it immediately tested the credibility of the policy by showing that a false-looking upload could still reach a recognizable artist page.

The supply chain makes accountability difficult
Music generally reaches Spotify through labels, aggregators and distributors. Those organizations transmit audio, artwork and metadata at enormous scale. Spotify is the visible consumer-facing service, but it does not control every decision made upstream.
That creates several failure points:
- A distributor can accept a release with inadequate identity checks.
- Metadata can match a new upload to an existing artist with a similar or identical name.
- Automated systems can prioritize speed and volume over human review.
- The real artist may not learn about the upload until after publication.
- A takedown may remove the track without explaining how it appeared or preventing a repeat attempt.
Spotify said it was testing prevention tactics with distributors and trying to stop attacks at the source. That is the correct direction, but it also means the outcome depends on cooperation across multiple companies with different incentives, systems and appeal procedures.
AI credits improve transparency—but they are not proof of provenance
Spotify later said it launched a beta feature allowing artists to disclose AI use through participating labels or distributors. The disclosure can appear in mobile Song Credits and identify contributions such as vocals, lyrics or production. Spotify said it was receiving tens of thousands of AI-credit submissions daily.
This is more useful than a crude “AI” or “not AI” badge because AI use can occur at different stages of making a song. However, a credit is still a report supplied through the music-delivery chain. It is not independent verification.
An AI credit does not by itself prove that a track is deceptive, and the absence of one does not prove that a song was made entirely by humans. Spotify acknowledges that the system depends on artists, labels and distributors, and that not every distributor supports it. Disclosure can tell listeners what has been reported; it cannot stop an impersonator from uploading to the wrong artist profile or guarantee that every relevant use was disclosed.

There are also difficult edge cases. A licensed AI voice may be authorized. A parody may be treated differently from an attempt to pass off synthetic vocals as an artist’s real performance; Spotify’s impersonation guidance recognizes exceptions such as certain forms of parody. A real artist using a pseudonym is not automatically deceptive. Conversely, a song that sounds synthetic may still be human-made, so audio suspicion alone is a dangerous basis for enforcement.

What Spotify’s strongest defense looks like
Spotify can reasonably argue that its response was broader than a promise to identify AI audio. It had already removed tens of millions of spam tracks, announced behavioral filtering, strengthened its impersonation policy, invested in content-mismatch controls and supported an industry-wide disclosure standard.
It also removed the Volcano Choir track when the problem was reported. That suggests the notice-and-takedown channel worked in this instance. The company’s decision to roll out the spam filter conservatively reflects a genuine trade-off: aggressive systems may stop more fraudulent releases but also delay legitimate releases, trigger wrongful takedowns or penalize independent artists who have limited ability to appeal.
The harder question is whether Spotify gives artists clear explanations, reliable pre-release verification and meaningful recovery when a release is wrongly assigned to their profile. An artist who has to discover a fake upload through a journalist has already absorbed much of the cost of the platform’s mistake.

Not outright. The initiative was real, and several of its components address genuine problems. Spotify’s policy does not ban AI-assisted music, and its planned filter is aimed largely at abusive behavior rather than at a universal definition of machine-made sound.

But the Volcano Choir episode exposed an apparent prevention failure. The platform’s system remained porous enough for a suspicious release to be attached to a dormant, real artist page almost immediately after the announcement. The response also remained dependent on distributor disclosures, artist reports and post-publication removal.
The right verdict is therefore narrower and more consequential than “Spotify cannot detect AI.” Spotify can remove spam, prohibit unauthorized impersonation and add useful credits while still failing to verify every upload before it reaches listeners. Detection is not attribution. Disclosure is not verification. Takedown is not prevention.
Spotify’s effort should be judged by measurable outcomes: how often fraudulent uploads are blocked before release, how accurately music is assigned to artist profiles, how many legitimate artists are wrongly penalized, how quickly appeals are resolved and whether artificial activity is excluded from royalty calculations. The available evidence shows a company responding to a serious systems problem—not one that has solved it.
What artists and distributors should watch
For independent musicians and small labels, the practical risk is not limited to AI-generated competition. Profile mismatches, unauthorized impersonation and unexplained takedowns can all interrupt a release.
- Check artist-profile assignment before a release goes live.
- Use available distributor and Spotify reporting channels for content mismatches.
- Keep documentation of ownership, authorization and licensed AI-voice agreements.
- Understand whether your distributor supports Spotify’s AI-credit submissions.
- Review appeal procedures, response expectations and royalty reporting before choosing a distributor.
Spotify’s named AI-disclosure participants included Amuse, AudioSalad, Believe, CD Baby, DistroKid, Downtown Artist & Label Services, EMPIRE, FUGA, IDOL, Kontor New Media, Labelcamp, NueMeta, Revelator, RouteNote, SonoSuite, Soundrop and Supply Chain. Being named as a participant does not, by itself, establish that any distributor is safer or more effective than another.
Useful starting points include Spotify for Artists and the official sites for DistroKid, CD Baby, TuneCore, Believe, Amuse, RouteNote and Soundrop. Their policies and pricing can change, so artists should verify current terms directly.
