There was no universal DirecTV replacement in 2025. YouTube TV was the strongest all-purpose choice for many households, but Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, Sling TV, Philo, Frndly TV, and an antenna-plus-streaming setup can be better depending on your local stations, sports rights, DVR needs, household size, and total bill. Check your ZIP code and must-have channels before canceling DirecTV.
This guide is a dated 2025 snapshot. Prices and lineups changed during the year and can change again; current provider pages should not be read as proof that a price or channel lineup lasted throughout 2025.
Quick picks
- Best overall: YouTube TV for a broad, cable-like package with local channels in many markets and unlimited-DVR positioning.
- Best bundle: Hulu + Live TV when Hulu, Disney+ and ESPN content are useful to your household.
- Best for sports: Fubo, after confirming the exact league, network, local affiliate and any regional-sports fee.
- Best budget choice: Sling TV when you can accept a narrower lineup and limited local coverage.
- Best entertainment value: Philo for lifestyle, reality and factual channels without major sports or broadcast locals.
- Best family niche service: Frndly TV for Hallmark-style, weather and family programming.
- Best locals-first savings: An antenna combined with a smaller streaming service.
Live-TV streaming services are usually virtual multichannel video programming distributors (vMVPDs): internet-delivered bundles of linear channels. They differ from individual network apps and free ad-supported services such as Pluto TV, Tubi and The Roku Channel, which generally cannot reproduce a paid bundle’s mix of locals, sports, cable networks and DVR.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube TV | $82.99/month after the January 2025 increase | Check ZIP code; broad coverage in many markets | Not universal; verify the team network | Unlimited DVR positioning; stream and home-location rules apply | Broad replacement | Near full-service pricing and possible carriage disputes |
| Hulu + Live TV | $82.99/month in earlier 2025 material; $89.99/month later in 2025 | Check ZIP code | Market and rights dependent | Unlimited DVR advertised; standard screens are more restrictive than some rivals | Live TV plus Hulu, Disney+ and ESPN content | Less value if you do not use the bundle |
| Fubo | Full-service pricing, generally near the YouTube TV/Hulu range depending on plan and fees | Check ZIP code | Strong sports focus, but fees and availability vary | Unlimited-DVR positioning; plan and device rules vary | Sports-led households | Base price may exclude needed networks or regional-sports fees |
| Sling TV | Budget-oriented; major base packages were roughly in the low-to-mid-$40s during 2025 | Limited and market dependent | Selective; add-ons required | Orange, Blue and combined plans have different stream rules; DVR can be limited or upgraded | Targeted channel buying | Add-ons can erase savings and locals may be missing |
| Philo | Low-cost entertainment positioning | Not a full local package | Not a major-sports replacement | Plan-specific limits; check current terms | Lifestyle and reality viewing | No broad locals, ESPN or major national sports |
| Frndly TV | Very low-cost niche positioning | Not a broadcast-local replacement | Not a sports service | Plan-specific limits; check current terms | Family, Hallmark-style and weather channels | Narrow lineup |
What to verify before choosing
Build a must-have channel list
Write down the exact local ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, PBS or CW affiliate; news channels such as CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC or Newsmax; sports networks such as ESPN, FS1, TNT, TBS, truTV, NFL Network, MLB Network, NBA TV, NHL Network, SEC Network, ACC Network or Big Ten Network; and entertainment networks such as HGTV, Food Network, Discovery, TLC, Bravo, USA, FX, AMC, TCM or Hallmark.
Then search each provider by ZIP code. A service can advertise “ABC” while lacking your specific affiliate. Channel counts can also include duplicate feeds, unavailable locals, niche networks or on-demand catalogs.
Separate national sports from regional sports
ESPN or FS1 does not guarantee access to your local baseball, basketball or hockey network. Check the team’s regional sports network, league package, national network and individual-game blackout rules separately. Fubo may be attractive for sports, but its local lineup and regional-sports fees vary. YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV and Sling are not universal RSN replacements.
Calculate the real monthly cost
- Start with the regular post-promotion price, not only an introductory offer.
- Add sports packages, regional-sports fees, premium networks, extra screens, DVR upgrades and applicable taxes.
- Compare annual cost after the promotion expires.
- Consider an antenna if broadcast locals are your main requirement.
Check DVR behavior
“Unlimited DVR” does not mean recordings remain forever or that every program permits unrestricted commercial skipping. Ask how long recordings are retained, whether an on-demand version replaces a DVR recording, which channels restrict fast-forwarding, and whether the feature is included in your plan. YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV and Fubo were commonly described as offering unlimited DVR in 2025; Sling’s base allowance was more limited and could be upgraded. Check simultaneous viewing and travel rules
Stream limits depend on the plan, device, home location and whether viewing occurs inside or outside the household. YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling, Fubo, Philo and Frndly TV all apply their own account rules. A paid screens upgrade may be necessary, and a designated home area can restrict students, RV travelers, second homes or relatives in another city. Do not assume one subscription can be used freely across separate residences.
Confirm device support
Check the current compatibility list for Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV or Android TV, Samsung and LG televisions, iPhone, Android phones, web browsers and game consoles. Older streaming sticks and smart-TV operating systems can lose app support even when the service continues.
Service-by-service guide
YouTube TV: the broad default
YouTube TV is the easiest starting point for a household replacing a wide DirecTV package: it combines a familiar guide, broad national coverage, local stations in many markets and unlimited-DVR positioning. Its base price rose to $82.99 per month in January 2025, according to AP reporting, so it is no longer a budget service.
Verify local affiliates and RSNs before subscribing. “Unlimited DVR” still has retention and playback rules, and home-location restrictions can frustrate account sharing between residences. Network carriage disputes can also remove a channel temporarily. Choose it when one general-purpose app matters more than assembling the absolute cheapest mix.

Hulu + Live TV: best when the bundle earns its keep
Hulu’s live-TV service combines linear channels with Hulu’s on-demand catalog and, in its bundle, Disney+ and ESPN content. Earlier 2025 material listed $82.99 per month; the price later rose to $89.99. Those are separate points in the year’s timeline, not one timeless price. Hulu’s historical pricing and announcements are available through its press archive and published plan pages.
It is compelling for existing Hulu or Disney+ users, but less so if you want only live channels. Standard simultaneous-viewing rules are more restrictive than some competitors unless you buy an appropriate upgrade. Live channels still carry their own advertising, and local availability, blackouts and sports rights remain market-specific.
Fubo: sports first, not sports everything
Fubo’s value comes from its sports-led plans and selected local or regional offerings. Before signing up at Fubo, search your ZIP code for every required network: ESPN-family channels, TNT/TBS, CBS Sports Network, FS1/FS2, league networks and your local affiliates. Regional-sports fees and add-ons can materially increase the advertised base price. It suits viewers who know the leagues and teams they need and are willing to pay for that coverage; it is a poor choice based only on a large channel count.
Sling TV: selective buying at a lower starting price
Sling’s Orange and Blue plans let you emphasize sports, news or entertainment instead of buying a broad bundle. The trade-off is complexity: the two plans have different lineups and simultaneous-stream rules, locals are limited, and add-ons can bring the final bill close to a fuller service. DVR capacity and premium features may cost extra. Sling works particularly well with an antenna for local stations, not as a seamless one-for-one DirecTV substitute.

Philo: inexpensive entertainment, not a complete replacement
Philo is designed around lifestyle, reality, factual and entertainment networks. It can be an economical companion to an antenna or separate sports subscription. It does not replace broadcast locals, ESPN, major live sports or many national-news channels, so its low price should be understood as a narrower purpose rather than automatically better value.
Frndly TV: a focused family option
Frndly TV is useful when Hallmark-style, family, weather and related lifestyle channels are the actual priority. Its lineup is too narrow for ESPN, major national news, broad locals or regional sports. Treat it as a supplement or niche replacement, not a full DirecTV equivalent.

Antenna plus streaming
Where reception is adequate, an antenna can deliver free local ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, PBS and other available broadcast stations. Pair it with Sling, Philo, Frndly TV or on-demand services for a lower total bill. Reception depends on geography, building materials, antenna placement and transmitter distance; DVR requires separate hardware or a compatible network tuner. An antenna does not provide cable networks, national news or regional sports.
Free and network-specific services
FAST services such as Pluto TV, Tubi and The Roku Channel are useful supplements, but their scheduled channels and catalogs do not normally reproduce a paid bundle. Buying only a network or league service can work for light viewers, yet divided rights create multiple apps, billing dates, missing games and no unified guide.

Before you cancel DirecTV
- Enter your ZIP code on each candidate’s official site and list the exact local affiliates.
- Search every must-have channel, team network and upcoming major event.
- Price the regular bill after promotions, including sports, DVR, screens, premiums, regional fees and taxes.
- Confirm your TV, streaming stick, phone and browser are supported.
- Read billing, cancellation and equipment-return terms; “no contract” does not eliminate billing-cycle or return obligations.
- Start the replacement before canceling if a playoff, local broadcast or other important event is imminent.
- Remember that recordings normally do not transfer between providers.
When something goes wrong
A channel or local station is missing
Recheck the ZIP-code lineup and affiliate name. If a carriage dispute caused the loss, use the provider’s notice, an antenna for broadcast stations or a temporary network app where rights permit. Do not assume a national channel label guarantees the local feed.
A game is blacked out
Confirm whether the problem is a local blackout, regional restriction, league-pass rule, network-rights gap or missing RSN. Changing apps will not bypass a league or geographic restriction.
The app fails on an older television
Check the provider’s supported-device list and update the TV or streaming stick. Replacing the external stick is often simpler than replacing a working television.
A promotion ends or streams are blocked
Review the account’s next bill, remove unused add-ons, and compare the post-promotion total with alternatives. If multiple streams fail, check whether viewers are outside the designated home area before paying for an upgrade.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBottom line
Start with YouTube TV for the broadest straightforward 2025 replacement, Hulu + Live TV if its on-demand bundle matters, Fubo for verified sports needs, Sling for a deliberately narrow budget package, and Philo or Frndly TV for entertainment niches. The winning choice is the cheapest package that contains the channels, local stations and games you actually watch—after every add-on, fee and promotion is included.
