For customizable ASMR bedtime mixes, BetterSleep is the strongest first choice among these mainstream apps. Calm is better suited to sleep stories and a broad relaxation routine, Headspace to guided wind-down exercises, and Medito to people who want free sleep and mindfulness content. None should be treated as a proven insomnia treatment: ASMR is personal, and the evidence that it improves sleep is limited.
Best ASMR and sleep apps at a glance
These are recommendations by use case, not hands-on test scores or a claim that one app works for everyone. Features and free access can change; check the current listing and terms for your device before subscribing.
| App | Best for | ASMR fit | Free access | Sleep and other tools | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BetterSleep | Building a personalized ASMR bedtime mix | Explicit ASMR category and layered sound mixing, according to BetterSleep’s feature page | Some content may be available without paying; which tools or sounds require a subscription can vary | Stories, meditation, breathing, timers, reminders, tracking | A large library can feel busy, and tracking may be unnecessary if you only want audio |
| Calm | Stories, meditation, and a polished bedtime routine | Not ASMR-first; better for broader sleep and relaxation content | Selected meditations, one Sleep Story, breathing exercises, and background scenes, according to Calm’s free-content page | Sleep Stories, meditation, breathing, music, soundscapes | Much of the wider catalog requires Premium |
| Headspace | Guided relaxation when thoughts keep you alert | Less suited to trigger-by-trigger ASMR browsing | A trial is not the same as a permanent free tier; check the current offer | Sleepcasts, sleep music, soundscapes, courses, meditation | Subscription may be more than you need for occasional audio |
| Medito | Free sleep and mindfulness content | Not a specialist ASMR catalog | Presented as free and nonprofit; see the U.S. App Store listing | Sleep stories, soundscapes, guided content, offline access | Less ASMR specialization and mixing than BetterSleep |
| Insight Timer | Browsing a broad meditation and sleep-audio library | Potentially useful for exploring styles, but current ASMR selection is not established here | Free material is a draw; check current access and plan terms | Broad creator and meditation ecosystem | Content consistency and discoverability can vary |
| Sleep Cycle | Sleep tracking and smart-alarm-oriented features | Not a primary ASMR recommendation | Current plan details are not stated here | Tracking-oriented tools | Tracking does not show that an audio track improved sleep |
BetterSleep’s support page describes more than 500 soothing sounds and melodies, including ASMR; its U.S. App Store listing describes more than 300 sound and music tracks. Those are different claims from different product pages, not one definitive count.
Choose an app by what helps you wind down
If you want specific ASMR triggers and a custom mix
Start with BetterSleep. Its explicit ASMR category and sound mixer make it the clearest fit here for layering a preferred trigger with a quieter background sound. BetterSleep also lists sleep stories, meditations, breathing exercises, timers, reminders, and tracking. The breadth is useful if you want one bedtime platform, but can be clutter if all you need is a simple player. Its App Store listing includes Apple-device and Apple Watch-related support; verify the current device requirements and subscription access in the listing.

If you want stories, breathing, and a wider relaxation library
Calm is a broad sleep and mindfulness app rather than a dedicated ASMR catalog. Its free content includes selected meditations, a Sleep Story, breathing exercises, and background scenes; much of the larger library is Premium. Choose it if narration or a structured wind-down appeals more than collecting whispering, tapping, or brushing triggers.
Headspace is another broad-platform option, with sleepcasts, sleep music, soundscapes, sleep courses, meditation, and mindfulness. Its U.S. sleep page lists an annual offer of $69.99 after a 14-day trial or $12.99 monthly after a 7-day trial; these are platform-, account-, and promotion-sensitive offers, not universal prices. See Headspace’s sleep page for current terms.
If you do not want another subscription
Medito is presented as a nonprofit, free mindfulness app with sleep stories, soundscapes, guided content, and offline access. It is a practical no-subscription starting point, though it is not positioned as an extensive ASMR mixer. Apple also includes Insight Timer among recommended meditation apps; its broad creator ecosystem may offer variety, but content tone, recording quality, and sleep suitability can vary.

If measurement matters more than ASMR
Sleep Cycle is better considered for tracking-oriented use than for ASMR playback. Consumer sleep apps may estimate sleep from signals such as movement and sound; these estimates are not clinical sleep studies. Tracking can help some people notice routines, but avoid it if scores make you anxious or lead you to check your phone overnight. For a broader account of sleep-app functions and limitations, see Sleep Foundation’s sleep-app overview.
What to check before choosing an ASMR sleep app
Actual triggers, not just ambient sound
Rain or music can be relaxing, but they are not necessarily ASMR. Look for the sounds you personally enjoy: whispering or soft speech, tapping, scratching, brushing, page turning, or personal-attention role-play. Mouth sounds and close-mic effects are polarizing. If voices bother you, prioritize nonverbal triggers, nature sounds, or brown, pink, or white noise.
Mixing and reliable playback
For a custom soundscape, check whether the app lets you layer sounds, adjust each layer’s volume, save a mix, and loop it smoothly. For falling asleep, a short session with a fade-out timer may be enough. For staying asleep or returning to sleep after waking, background playback, offline downloads, predictable volume, and simple screen-off controls matter more. A browsing-heavy app can turn bedtime into a search session; save a preferred track or mix in advance.

Free access, trials, and subscriptions
A free download, a time-limited trial, and a permanent free tier are different things. Check whether the specific ASMR sounds or playback controls you want are included without payment, when a trial ends, what billing term follows, and whether the subscription renews automatically. Prices can vary by country, device platform, account, and promotion; cancel through the seller that manages the subscription—such as Apple, Google, or the app provider—and confirm the cancellation there.
For a price example rather than a universal rate, Headspace’s U.S. page lists the trial and subscription offers above. Current comparable prices for the other apps are not stated here; check their official listings or checkout before committing. Calm’s free-content details are on its support page, and BetterSleep’s feature details are on its support page.
Privacy and interruptions
Review an app’s current privacy policy and device permissions, especially if it offers sleep tracking or recording. Health, movement, microphone, and sleep-related data may be relevant to those features; do not assume every app handles them the same way. Also check notification settings, autoplay, ads or previews, and transitions between tracks. A sudden loud segment can be more disruptive than the original sound is soothing.

ASMR, noise, stories, or meditation: which fits?
| Try | When it may suit you | Possible drawback |
|---|---|---|
| ASMR | You have a calming response to particular close, repetitive, or soft sounds | A trigger that relaxes one listener can irritate or activate another |
| White, brown, or pink noise | You want a steady sound to mask environmental noise without narration | Continuous sound may bother you or a bed partner |
| Sleep stories | Language and narration help you settle without actively meditating | A plot or engaging narrator can keep you listening |
| Guided meditation or breathing | Racing thoughts or presleep arousal are the main obstacle | Following instructions may not suit you every night |
| Music | You prefer sound without spoken content | Changes in tempo, lyrics, or volume may draw attention |
| Tracking | Observing routines motivates changes without increasing worry | Scores are estimates and can fuel sleep anxiety |
Use ASMR as a wind-down cue, not a nightly project
- Pick one familiar trigger. Choose a sound you already find calming instead of browsing through many options once you are in bed.
- Start it before lights out. Try playback 20–30 minutes before your intended sleep time; this is practical guidance, not a clinically validated app setting.
- Keep the volume low. It should be background, not something you have to concentrate on. If you share a bed, a quiet bedside speaker or suitable sleep headphones may be more considerate than playing audio aloud.
- Set a timer or prepare a loop. Use a fade-out timer if available for a short wind-down. If continuous sound helps you, choose a steady, low-volume track and check that looping does not introduce an abrupt seam or loud change.
- Reduce screen and notification distractions. Queue audio, lock the screen, and disable notifications or autoplay recommendations where possible. For an overnight shift or irregular schedule, use flexible timers and avoid alarms that conflict with work.
- Repeat the same setup for several nights. A familiar cue makes it easier to tell whether the sound suits you; changing tracks repeatedly makes that harder.
- If you wake, keep it simple. Use a saved one-tap track if needed rather than opening a video or social feed. If audio makes you more alert, stop or switch to a quieter, nonverbal option.
For an app-specific starting point, BetterSleep can be set up with one ASMR trigger, a neutral layer such as rain or brown noise, and a saved mix with a timer. In Calm, try a free background scene, breathing exercise, meditation, or Sleep Story; do not assume its free tier is a broad ASMR library. In Headspace, a sleepcast or sleep course is the more natural choice when mental activity—not a particular trigger—is the problem. With Medito, download a story or soundscape for offline playback.
Devices and comfort matter overnight
- Offline access: Download content before travel or bedtime if connectivity may be unreliable, and check which content can actually be downloaded on your plan.
- Phone placement: Do not put a phone under a pillow; keep it on a stable surface where it can ventilate and remain easy to reach.
- Headphones: Side-sleeping can make earbuds uncomfortable. Do not sleep with wired earbuds if the cable could create an entanglement or strangulation risk.
- Shared rooms: Use a low-volume speaker or sleep-specific audio device if sound would disturb a partner; do not raise volume to overpower the room.
- Battery and alarms: Overnight playback can use battery. Charge safely and ensure an app timer or smart alarm will not override a work or caregiving schedule.
What the evidence says about ASMR and sleep
ASMR is a subjective sensory response, not a treatment everyone experiences. Some people find whispering, tapping, brushing, or personal-attention role-play calming; others find the same sounds unpleasant or stimulating. The defensible expectation is that a suitable track may help some listeners relax or establish a consistent wind-down cue—not that it cures insomnia.
ASMR-specific sleep evidence remains limited. A 2024 preprint on ASMR and sleep in adolescents was not peer-reviewed at the time it was identified, so it is preliminary rather than definitive: the preprint.

There is broader, but distinct, evidence for mindfulness apps. In a randomized trial, adults with sleep disturbance used Calm for at least 10 minutes daily over eight weeks; compared with a wait-list group, the intervention group showed reductions in fatigue, daytime sleepiness, and presleep arousal. That supports cautious claims about that mindfulness-app intervention, not ASMR generally or every feature in Calm. See the trial record.
A 2026 randomized trial of app-based bedtime stories, sleep sounds, and sleep skills reported that the audio interventions were safe and well tolerated, but did not support them as standalone treatments for sleep disturbance. Soothing audio can be an aid, but should not be presented as a substitute for insomnia care; see the trial record.
When to seek help beyond an app
Consider speaking with a clinician or sleep specialist if sleep problems persist or impair daytime functioning. Seek an evaluation for loud snoring, gasping or suspected sleep apnea, severe daytime sleepiness, restless-legs symptoms, night terrors or unusual nighttime behavior, or depression, anxiety, trauma symptoms, or panic that interfere with sleep. Needing increasingly loud or lengthy audio to fall asleep is also a reason to discuss your sleep routine and symptoms with a professional. An app cannot diagnose the cause.
