Better Man follows Robbie Williams’s rise, fall and resurgence, but its defining choice is to portray him as a CGI chimpanzee. The image is more than a surreal hook: it gives the musical biopic a way to explore self-image, performance and the machinery of fame. The film’s “PTSD” framing is metaphorical and attributed to a retrospective comment—not evidence that Williams has a clinical PTSD diagnosis.
What is Better Man about?
Directed by Michael Gracey, Better Man tells the story of Williams’s career through the familiar rise-and-fall shape of a musical biopic, then follows his resurgence. Paramount describes its themes as fame, recovery, relationships and redemption. Its cast includes Williams, Jonno Davies, Steve Pemberton, Damon Herriman, Raechelle Banno, Alison Steadman and Kate Mulvany.
The film premiered on December 25, 2024, according to Paramount Global Content. Its subject is a real public figure and his life, but the film is a dramatic biopic, not a documentary record; its heightened musical sequences and compressed storytelling are part of its approach.
Why is Robbie Williams depicted as a chimpanzee?
The CGI chimpanzee is the film’s central formal idea, not a literal claim about Williams. In a Directors Guild of America Q&A, Gracey connected the choice to Williams feeling “less evolved than other people.” It makes the singer’s self-image visible while keeping the story’s human experiences—ambition, loneliness, relationships and public scrutiny—in view.

Williams offered a related explanation in the BBC’s feature on the film: “There is a surrender to the machinery of the industry that requires you to be a robot or a monkey. I chose to be a monkey.” The conceit can therefore be read as a metaphor for the dehumanizing pressure to perform. It also creates a real risk for the film: if the visual device feels like a novelty, it can compete with the person it is meant to reveal.
Does the film say Robbie Williams had PTSD?
No clinical diagnosis is established by the sources cited here. The comparison comes from pop manager Alex Kadis, speaking to the BBC about Williams around his departure from Take That in 1995. “At that point, he was like a man who was suffering from PTSD,” Kadis said, describing him as not sleeping, taking a lot of drugs and no longer knowing who he was. That is her retrospective analogy, not a medical assessment.

The film and its surrounding interviews do address psychological strain and substance use. Paramount’s interview with Williams discusses addiction, anxiety and depression; the Associated Press review describes depression and alcohol and cocaine habits in the story. Those themes support reading the film as an account of the costs of fame, but they do not establish a PTSD diagnosis or show that fame inevitably causes mental illness.
How well does the chimpanzee conceit work?
Its strongest purpose is to separate the private person from the pop-star image. TIME’s interview with Williams highlights the distinction between Robert Williams as a boy and “Robbie Williams” as a constructed persona. The chimpanzee gives that split a striking visual form: the audience sees a performer who is both inside the show and alienated from its demands.

The device also lets spectacle and vulnerability occupy the same frame. The BBC describes musical set pieces that recontextualize familiar songs alongside intimate concerns such as acceptance and self-criticism. Whether that balance works will depend on how much a viewer accepts the film’s deliberately artificial image. The production choice is purposeful, but purpose alone does not guarantee emotional access.
Is Better Man worth watching?
The film’s appeal lies in the tension between its scale and its subject: large musical sequences set against a story about identity, scrutiny and recovery. The AP review gives it three out of four stars, calling it entertaining while also finding it overlong and indulgent in places. That response captures a useful expectation: this is an emphatic, stylized biopic, not a restrained chronicle.

For viewers interested in how pop stardom shapes a public persona—and how a film can turn that idea into visual form—the chimpanzee conceit gives Better Man a distinctive critical angle. For viewers who want a conventional, unadorned portrait, the same conceit may be its biggest obstacle.
