For YouTube Live at 1080p, match your bitrate to both frame rate and codec: YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 30 fps, and 14 Mbps for H.264 at 30 fps. At 60 fps, the recommendations are 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264. These are incoming video bitrate recommendations—not guarantees of picture quality or a required internet plan. Choose a profile your upload connection can sustain reliably, then test it before the event.

What bitrate should I use for 1080p YouTube Live?

YouTube Help lists different recommended bitrates for each codec and frame rate. Use the row that matches the video you are sending to YouTube:

Stream profile AV1 or H.265 recommended video bitrate H.264 recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s configuration recommendations, as listed in its encoder settings guidance accessed in 2026; they are not results from a controlled image-quality study. The source does not establish that one codec will always look better than another at the listed bitrates. Choose a codec your encoder supports and YouTube can ingest, then test the resulting stream.

For a documentary, interview, lecture or presentation with modest movement, 1080p30 is a sensible starting profile. Use 1080p60 when smoother motion matters—for example, when the picture includes fast movement—and your encoder and upload connection can sustain the higher bitrate. If the connection struggles, a stable lower-bitrate profile is preferable to a nominally sharper stream that keeps interrupting.

Should I stream at 30 fps or 60 fps?

Choose 30 fps for relatively still footage

Thirty frames per second is generally a practical choice for talking heads, interviews, slides and many documentary-style programmes. It requires less bitrate than 1080p60 in YouTube’s recommendations, and may be easier for an encoder and connection to sustain.

Choose 60 fps when motion smoothness matters

Sixty frames per second can make rapid movement appear smoother, but YouTube’s recommended bitrate is higher at 1080p60 than at 1080p30 for both codec groups. The encoder must also produce the selected frame rate consistently. Do not select 60 fps simply because it is the highest option; match it to the source footage, equipment and dependable upload capacity.

Which YouTube encoder settings should I use?

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists these core settings:

  • Protocol: RTMPS is recommended for encrypted transport; RTMP is also listed.
  • Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, subject to encoder and ingestion compatibility.
  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds is recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: up to 60 fps. Choose 30 or 60 based on the content and what the system can sustain.
  • SDR picture: progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth.
  • Stereo audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube lists 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz in its advanced settings.

Use the bitrate recommendation for the codec you actually select. Do not enter the H.264 figure for an AV1 or H.265 stream merely because the resolution and frame rate are the same.

How do I set and test the profile before going live?

  1. Check the encoder and YouTube ingestion options. Confirm that your encoder can produce the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR mode and keyframe interval. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
  2. Measure upload capacity. Run an upload speed test, then select a bitrate your connection can sustain reliably. A speed-test peak is not guaranteed capacity; leave practical headroom for ordinary network variation.
  3. Choose the matching profile. Select the resolution and frame rate, then use the corresponding codec-specific bitrate in the table. YouTube recommends choosing a quality the connection can sustain rather than pushing the highest setting.
  4. Run a private or unlisted rehearsal. Test with movement and sound similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  5. Check stream health in Live Control Room. Monitor warnings during the test and during the event; address problems rather than assuming the stream is healthy because the encoder says it is sending.
  6. Adjust if the connection is unstable. Reduce video bitrate or resolution and test again. A lower, steady profile is more useful to viewers than a higher profile that repeatedly stalls.

Should I use automatic resolution detection or a custom stream key?

YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection in Live Control Room by default. A custom stream key allows manual selection. Use automatic detection when you do not need to dictate a specific profile; use a custom key when you need to choose settings manually and can verify that your encoder, source and connection support them.

YouTube transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple output formats so viewers can watch on different devices and network connections. That does not remove the need to send a stable source stream: choose a sustainable input profile and monitor stream health.

Why is my YouTube live stream lagging or buffering?

Upload capacity is inconsistent

A bitrate that exceeds what the connection can maintain can lead to instability. Recheck upload capacity, leave headroom for variation, then lower the video bitrate or resolution and repeat the rehearsal.

The selected frame rate is difficult to sustain

If 60 fps is not being produced consistently or pushes the connection too hard, try 30 fps. The right choice depends on whether the programme benefits from smoother motion and whether the encoder and connection can handle it.

The test did not match the actual programme

A static test screen may not represent a broadcast with movement and audio. Rehearse with representative footage and sound before the event, then check YouTube’s stream health for warnings.

The encoder profile does not match the chosen codec

Verify the bitrate against the codec-specific recommendation: YouTube lists separate values for H.264 and AV1/H.265. Also check CBR and the keyframe interval; YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
