For most creators, the practical choices are a computer running streaming software, dedicated encoder hardware, or a cloud service that sends prerecorded video to YouTube Live. Developers can also automate broadcasts through the YouTube Live Streaming API. Choose based on where you want the ongoing playback and encoder workload to run—not on an assumption that a 24/7 stream guarantees more viewers, watch time, or revenue.
Choose where the stream will run

There are no substantiated head-to-head price or reliability measurements for these approaches here. Compare the computer, equipment, connectivity, or service responsibilities you would actually take on rather than assuming one option is universally cheapest or most reliable. YouTube’s encoder guide identifies OBS and lists Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming; that listing alone does not verify a service’s current pricing, uptime, or partner terms.
Set up a computer-based prerecorded stream
YouTube’s encoder workflow is the relevant starting point when you want local software or hardware to send prerecorded programming. Its guide explains how to connect an encoder, but does not document a specific playlist-loop recipe. How you choose and repeat files depends on your encoder software and operating system.
- Check channel eligibility. Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Prepare the prerecorded source. In your encoder, configure the media source or playlist according to that software’s instructions. Confirm that playback advances and repeats as intended before relying on an unattended run; the exact controls vary by application.
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow and create or select the stream you intend to use. Choose the encoder option where prompted.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in the encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as a password and address: keep the key private, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Set the start and stop behavior. YouTube’s stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop options. They let an encoder control when a stream starts and stops, but do not guarantee an uninterrupted feed.
- Preview, then go live. Preview the incoming stream in YouTube Studio before starting the broadcast. Once it looks and sounds right, start sending the content from the encoder and begin the stream using the configured workflow.
- Monitor the output. YouTube advises monitoring audio and video quality while streaming. Check that the prerecorded source continues playing and that the Studio preview still receives the expected content.
YouTube’s encoder instructions do not specify universal bitrate, resolution, keyframe, or computer-specification settings for this prerecorded workflow. Use settings supported by your encoder, source files, and connection, and consult the encoder’s documentation for configuration details rather than treating an unsupported preset as a YouTube requirement.

Use hardware, a cloud service, or API automation
Dedicated encoder hardware
A standalone encoder can take the place of software encoding on a computer. It may suit an existing broadcast-hardware workflow, but YouTube does not require expensive equipment to begin streaming. Select hardware for the actual production and media workload; the reviewed YouTube guidance does not name a mandatory device or provide a 24/7 hardware specification.
Cloud streaming service
A cloud service runs the streaming workload away from your home computer. YouTube’s encoder documentation lists Gyre as an example for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams. The listing is not a verification of current features, price, uptime, or service terms, so check those directly with any provider you consider.

YouTube Live Streaming API
The API distinguishes the incoming liveStream resource from viewer-facing liveBroadcast resources. YouTube documents a pattern where a 24/7 broadcast remains live while an application creates and completes a separate broadcast—such as an interview—using the same incoming stream. This is useful for developers who need scheduled or segmented programming; it is not a no-code way to loop a playlist.
Plan for stream keys, archives, and viewer controls
Protect the stream key
Treat the key like a credential because anyone with access may be able to send content to your stream. Do not publish it or place it in publicly accessible code. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder or service using it.

Account for archive behavior
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a continuous all-day broadcast will produce one intact archive; plan how you will manage recordings and check YouTube’s current behavior for your channel. Archiving is separate from DVR: with DVR enabled, viewers can pause, rewind, and resume during the live stream.
Use auto-start and auto-stop deliberately
These settings can let an encoder control stream start and stop, and YouTube allows stream settings to be reused, including those selections. They are workflow conveniences—not a substitute for monitoring or a guarantee of service continuity.

Clear rights and understand monetization separately
Only stream material you own or are authorized to use. YouTube points creators to applicable copyright exceptions, permission from rights holders, Creative Commons terms, and music from YouTube’s Audio Library or Creator Music. Copyright rules differ by jurisdiction, and YouTube warns that none of these routes guarantees avoiding a claim or strike.
Permission to stream content does not by itself make it eligible for monetization. In its policy update dated July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and said repetitive or mass-produced material is ineligible under existing policy. Reused content may also be ineligible—even when the creator has permission—if it lacks meaningful original commentary, substantive modification, or viewer value. These monetization policies apply to live streams as well as other video formats.

Decide who should operate the stream
- Choose a local software encoder if you want to manage playback and streaming on your own computer and are comfortable maintaining that setup.
- Choose dedicated hardware if standalone broadcast equipment fits your existing production workflow; YouTube does not require expensive hardware to get started.
- Consider a cloud service if you do not want a dedicated computer to handle continuous playback. Verify the provider’s current features and terms before choosing.
- Use the API if you are building a developer-managed schedule or need separate broadcasts to share a continuous incoming feed.
