Best depends on your setup: use OBS Studio’s built-in Chroma Key filter if you have a physical green screen; try NVIDIA Broadcast for background removal without a screen if your Windows PC meets its RTX requirements; and consider XSplit Broadcaster if you want automatic removal integrated into a Windows production app. There is no established apples-to-apples test showing which gives the cleanest cutout or uses the least system resources, so test the option that fits your hardware and workflow.
Choose by hardware and workflow
| Option | Best fit | Background method | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Streamers who want a free, cross-platform production hub; especially useful with a physical green screen | Built-in Chroma Key filter for a screen; third-party plugin for software background removal | The no-screen removal route relies on a community add-on, not a built-in OBS filter. OBS Studio |
| NVIDIA Broadcast | Windows users with supported NVIDIA RTX hardware who want a virtual camera feed | AI background removal, replacement, or blur | Requires compatible hardware, Windows, memory, and driver versions. NVIDIA Broadcast |
| XSplit Broadcaster | Windows users who want production tools and camera effects in one app | Automatic VCam background removal, Chroma Key, or Color Key | Free-plan limits include watermarks on specified output and features, a four-scene cap, and personal-use restriction. XSplit Broadcaster |
These are different kinds of tools: OBS mixes a production, NVIDIA Broadcast supplies a processed virtual-camera feed to apps such as OBS and XSplit, and XSplit combines production with camera effects. A physical chroma key removes a chosen color; software segmentation attempts to separate a person from the background without requiring a screen.
Which one should you try?
Choose NVIDIA Broadcast if you have a compatible RTX Windows PC
NVIDIA Broadcast is the most direct fit when you want background removal without buying or setting up a green screen and already have supported hardware. Its virtual camera lets you select the processed feed in production or video apps such as OBS and XSplit. NVIDIA lists GeForce RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, TITAN RTX, or higher, 8 GB RAM, Windows 10 64-bit, and driver 570 or higher as requirements; it recommends an Intel Core i5 8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or higher. Installation requires an internet connection. Confirm the current requirements on NVIDIA’s requirements page before installing, since they can change.
Choose OBS Chroma Key if you have a physical green screen
OBS Studio is free, open-source, and available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its built-in Chroma Key filter removes a selected color, making it the straightforward choice when you can provide a reasonably consistent green background. The filter includes controls for similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction. OBS warns that meeting its platform minimum requirements does not guarantee adequate performance: encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity also matter. See OBS Studio and the Chroma Key filter guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you choose chroma key, a green screen backdrop gives the filter a consistent color to remove. It is an optional part of this workflow, not a requirement for software background removal.
Choose the OBS Background Removal plugin if you want to stay in OBS without a screen
OBS itself does not include the no-screen background-removal filter described here; that option is a third-party community plugin. Its OBS resource listing names Windows, macOS, and Linux support, and OBS 28.0.0 as the minimum version. The listing was last updated August 9, 2026. Check the resource’s current release notes and compatibility with your installed OBS version, then use its official resource link to obtain it: OBS Background Removal resource. Plugin availability and compatibility can change independently of OBS.
Choose XSplit Broadcaster if you want integrated effects on Windows
XSplit Broadcaster includes automatic VCam background removal as well as Chroma Key and Color Key modes. Its support page says higher automatic-removal quality settings use more hardware resources; try the available settings while monitoring your own system. The product is positioned for Windows, and its exact system requirements should be checked against your version and intended production resolution. See XSplit Broadcaster and its virtual background support page.

How to set up a virtual green screen
OBS Studio with a physical green screen
- Install and open OBS Studio. Add your camera as a source in the scene where you want to appear.
- In the Sources list, right-click the camera source and select Filters.
- Under Effect Filters, add Chroma Key. Choose the key color that matches your backdrop, usually green.
- Adjust Similarity until the backdrop is removed without eating into your subject. Adjust Smoothness to soften the key’s edges, then use Spill Reduction to reduce green color reflecting onto you.
- Put the replacement image, video, or scene layer beneath the camera source. Check the result while moving and speaking, not only in a still preview.
- Make lighting on the backdrop as even as practical and keep clothing or objects near the key color out of frame; those colors may also be removed.
OBS documents the filter and its controls in its Chroma Key filter guide. It does not prescribe universal slider values: the right balance depends on your camera, backdrop, lighting, and subject.

- Check NVIDIA’s current supported hardware, Windows, memory, and driver requirements before installing.
- Install NVIDIA Broadcast with an internet connection and choose the camera effect you want, such as background removal, replacement, or blur.
- In OBS, add or edit a camera source and select the NVIDIA Broadcast camera as its device.
- Preview your actual framing and movement, then check system load while OBS is streaming or recording. If the source is missing, confirm the app is installed, the camera is available, and the NVIDIA requirements are met.
Because Broadcast provides a virtual-camera feed, the background processing happens before OBS receives the image. Do not add a second removal filter unless you specifically want another effect.
XSplit Broadcaster
- Confirm the current Windows and system requirements for your version, then install XSplit Broadcaster.
- Select your camera and open its virtual-camera/background controls.
- Choose Automatic removal for a no-screen setup, or Chroma Key or Color Key if you want to remove a selected color.
- Test the quality setting against your actual lighting, movement, and system load. XSplit notes that higher automatic-removal quality uses more hardware resources.
- Before relying on the free plan for a public or commercial stream, check the current restrictions and watermark behavior on XSplit’s pricing page.
OBS with the Background Removal plugin
- Check the plugin’s current compatibility and release notes against your OBS version and operating system.
- Download it through the official OBS resource listing and follow that release’s installation instructions.
- Restart OBS if the plugin instructions require it, then find the plugin’s background-removal filter in the camera source’s Filters panel.
- Test the cutout with your usual lighting, framing, clothing, and movement, and verify that your computer can handle the filter together with your encoder and other scene sources.
Plugin installation details can change by release; use the resource’s current directions rather than assuming an older tutorial still applies.

How to choose between a physical screen and software removal
- Use a physical green screen with chroma key if you can control the backdrop and want OBS’s built-in filter. The key removes the selected color, so similarly colored clothing or objects can disappear too.
- Use software segmentation if you do not want a screen or have a background that is difficult to light evenly. NVIDIA Broadcast and XSplit offer automatic removal; in an OBS-only setup, the cited no-screen route is a third-party plugin.
- Check operating-system and hardware fit first. OBS is cross-platform, NVIDIA Broadcast has specific RTX and Windows requirements, and XSplit Broadcaster is Windows software.
- Run a real test before committing. No comparable controlled results establish which option has the cleanest edges or lowest performance cost. Check your own camera, lighting, movement, and computer load in a representative scene.
Plans, prices, and restrictions
OBS Studio and NVIDIA Broadcast
OBS describes OBS Studio as free and open source. NVIDIA presents Broadcast as a downloadable app; its product page does not establish that buying an RTX graphics card solely for background removal is worthwhile. Consider the hardware’s other uses and total cost rather than treating the filter as a reason by itself to upgrade.

Common problems and fixes
The keyed background remains visible or looks uneven
With OBS Chroma Key, uneven illumination or a backdrop that varies in color can make a single-color key harder to tune. Adjust the camera framing and lighting, then revisit Similarity, Smoothness, and Spill Reduction. Avoid raising Similarity so far that it removes parts of your face, hair, or clothing.
Edges look rough or parts of the subject disappear
Recheck lighting, camera exposure, distance from the background, and movement. With chroma key, make sure the subject is distinct from the selected color. With automatic removal, test a different quality setting where available and compare in motion. No single setting is established as best for every camera and scene.
NVIDIA Broadcast is unavailable or its camera does not appear
Check that the computer meets NVIDIA’s current GPU, Windows, RAM, and driver requirements, and that installation completed with internet access. Then confirm the app’s virtual camera is selected as the source in OBS or the other production app.

The OBS removal filter is missing
Confirm that the third-party plugin release supports your operating system and installed OBS version, and follow the installation directions for that release. The plugin is not a built-in OBS filter.
The stream or recording becomes unstable after enabling removal
Background effects add work to a production setup whose performance already depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Reduce competing scene load or choose a less demanding effect or quality setting, then test again at the output settings you intend to use. XSplit specifically notes that its higher automatic-removal quality uses more hardware resources.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of pre-recorded video rather than a live camera presentation, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud; it does not remove a webcam background or stream from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs from the cloud, not your computer or home connection.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.
