For a static border, snowflakes, or corner decorations, add an Image source in OBS Studio. For alerts, chat, or other hosted elements, add the provider’s URL as a Browser Source. Keep decorations away from important gameplay, faces, captions, and on-screen text.
Christmas overlay ideas that work on stream
- Subtle seasonal frame: Add a thin evergreen, warm-light, or snowflake border around the camera or the full scene. A transparent PNG can preserve clear areas for the content beneath it.
- Corner accents: Place ornaments, holly, stars, gift boxes, or snowflakes in unused corners rather than over the center of the picture or important game HUD elements.
- Matching scene cards: Create coordinated “Starting Soon,” “Be Right Back,” and “Stream Ending” layouts so the seasonal look carries across scene changes. Streamlabs lists these as examples of scenes to create when building an overlay manually.
- Animated snow or lights: Use a suitably licensed transparent animation or hosted overlay, then check its playback and readability in your streaming software. Performance and usage rights depend on the particular asset.
- Festive alerts: Add a provider’s alert widget through a Browser Source if you want interactive elements such as animated holiday alerts. OBS describes third-party alert overlays as web content embedded this way.
These are design approaches, not endorsements of a specific pack. Before using or monetizing any downloadable graphic or widget, check its license and whether it is compatible with your streaming software.
Choose the right way to add the overlay

OBS organizes scenes from sources, including Image sources for images or slideshows and Browser sources for web pages. OBS does not supply stream alerts directly; a third-party alert page can be embedded as a Browser Source. Streamlabs documents library installation, importing an existing .overlay file, and building scenes manually.
Add a Christmas overlay in OBS Studio
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene where you want the Christmas layout. You can keep a separate seasonal scene or scene collection to make switching back easier; this is a workflow choice, not a requirement.
- Add the right source. In the Sources dock, click the plus button and select Image for a local static graphic or Browser for a hosted overlay page or widget. OBS’s source documentation describes these source types and their uses.
- Set up a Browser Source if needed. Get the widget URL from its provider and enter it in the Browser Source properties. Do not share a private account-linked widget URL publicly.
- Position and layer the overlay. Place decorative elements above the content they frame, but keep gameplay, camera faces, captions, and status text visible. OBS lets you position sources and change their order in the scene.
- Preview and test. Check the full scene before going live. For an alert widget, use the provider’s test function where available; Streamlabs documents a test function for its alerts.
Add an overlay with Streamlabs
Install one from the Streamlabs library
In Streamlabs Desktop, browse or search the overlay library, choose an overlay, select its components, and install it. Confirm that Streamlabs Desktop opens; the guide says the overlay appears in the scene collection.

Import an overlay file
In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings, go to Scene Collections, choose Import Overlay File, and select the .overlay file. Review and adjust the imported scenes before using them.
Build scenes manually
Create a fresh scene collection, add scenes such as Starting Soon, Live, and BRB, then add image files through each scene’s Sources control.

Use Streamlabs widgets or transfer an overlay to OBS
Streamlabs says custom widgets can be added directly in Streamlabs Desktop or through a Browser Source in OBS and other streaming software. Its documentation also describes a plugin workflow and transferring overlays by importing a Streamlabs scene collection into OBS without the plugin. Follow Streamlabs’ current detailed instructions for the exact transfer steps.
Check the finished layout before going live
- Make sure the overlay does not obscure gameplay, presentation details, faces, captions, or other important text.
- Check that every scene in a packaged collection looks right, not only the main live scene.
- Test Browser Source widgets and alerts where the provider offers a test function.
- Confirm that you have permission to use the graphic, animation, or widget as intended, especially if the stream is monetized.
There is no established engagement or performance figure that applies to Christmas overlays generally. Choose an overlay for clarity and fit rather than relying on an unverified promise of more viewers.
