Adolescence is the best TV show of 2025. The four-part drama is the year’s most complete combination of formal invention, emotional force, and social relevance. It leads a ranked list that also includes The Pitt, Severance season 2, Andor season 2, The Studio, and five more standout series.
This is an evidence-based editorial ranking, not an objective mathematical verdict. It weighs critical consensus, Emmy recognition, and the distinctiveness of the viewing experience, with separate consideration for new series and returning seasons.
Our pick for the best TV show of 2025 is Adolescence. The four-part Netflix drama combines exceptional performances, formally daring direction, and a devastating examination of youth, masculinity, family responsibility, and institutional failure. It was also Metacritic’s top new series of 2025 and won the Emmy for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
The rest of this ranking balances three signals rather than pretending that “best” can be calculated exactly: professional critical consensus, major industry recognition, and how distinctive or useful each viewing experience is. That produces a list led by Adolescence, The Pitt, Severance season 2, Andor season 2, and The Studio, while making room for ambitious comedy, hybrid nonfiction, anthology drama, and lighter group viewing.

How this 2025 ranking was chosen
This is an editorial ranking, not an objective league table. A show can be culturally important, artistically daring, or personally useful without having the highest aggregate score. To keep the list grounded, the ranking combines:
- Critical consensus: Metacritic’s year-end data placed Andor season 2 at 92, Hacks season 4 at 91, The Rehearsal season 2 at 88, and Severance season 2 at 87 among returning series. Its separate new-series comparison named Adolescence the best new TV show of 2025. See Metacritic’s 2025 television rankings.
- Industry recognition: At the 77th Emmy Awards, Adolescence won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series, and The Studio won Outstanding Comedy Series. The Studio also set a comedy record with 13 Emmy wins. Review the Television Academy’s winners list.
- Distinctive viewing value: The final order considers what each show does especially well, whether that is sustaining a real-time emergency-room pressure cooker, turning a corporate mystery into visual satire, or making viewers question the ethics of documentary performance.
The Emmys are a useful validation layer, but their eligibility period covers the 2024–2025 television season rather than a perfectly strict January 1 through December 31 calendar year. Awards therefore support the ranking without defining it.
1. Adolescence
Why watch: The year’s most formally assured and emotionally forceful limited series.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne’s four-part British drama begins with the arrest of a 13-year-old boy accused of murdering a classmate. From there, it widens its focus to include the boy’s family, the police, the school environment, and the community struggling to understand what happened. The series is not simply a crime story. It asks how adults interpret young people, how online and social pressures shape ideas about masculinity, and where responsibility sits when a crisis emerges from a whole environment rather than one isolated decision.
Its signature device is the uninterrupted, one-take construction of each episode. That technique matters because it denies the viewer the relief of a conventional edit. Conversations cannot be tidied up, emotional confrontations cannot be escaped, and the camera’s movement keeps placing the audience inside changing social pressures. The formal ambition becomes part of the argument rather than a visual stunt.
Adolescence was Metacritic’s official No. 1 new TV show of 2025. The Television Academy recognized it for limited series, acting, writing, directing, cinematography, casting, sound, and costume. Metacritic’s year-end feature documents its critical position.
Best for: Serious viewers, limited-series fans, and discussions about masculinity, youth culture, family responsibility, and institutional failure.
Content note: This is emotionally difficult material, not casual background viewing. Violence, murder, adolescent distress, and the consequences for grieving families are central to the story.
2. The Pitt
Why watch: A relentless emergency-room drama that makes routine medical work feel as consequential as a major crisis.
The Pitt is structured around the passage of a single shift in an emergency department. That compressed timeframe creates momentum, but the show’s strength is not just urgency. It pays attention to triage, handoffs, staffing pressure, competing priorities, and the ethical compromises that arise when too many patients need help at once.
The ensemble format lets the series move beyond one heroic doctor. Its drama comes from decisions made under incomplete information, the emotional cost of treating strangers, and the friction between professional ideals and an overstretched institution. That makes it an unusually effective traditional workplace drama: the procedures generate the tension, while the people give the procedures meaning.

The Television Academy named The Pitt the 2025 Outstanding Drama Series and recognized Noah Wyle and Katherine LaNasa for acting. It also ranked among the year’s strongest shows in Metacritic’s television comparison, with an 85 Metascore. Check Metacritic’s 2025 TV score list.
Best for: Viewers who want procedural momentum, medical stakes, ensemble storytelling, and a complete season arc without a fantasy or franchise premise.

Why watch: The second season expands one of television’s sharpest workplace metaphors without abandoning its eerie visual discipline.

Season 2 continues to explore what that split means once the people inside the system begin to understand that the arrangement is not as controlled or as benevolent as it appeared.
The season’s appeal lies in the tension between mystery and metaphor. Its puzzles encourage speculation, but the deeper subject is the way organizations separate a person from their labor, identity, and moral agency. The sterile architecture, controlled compositions, and unnerving corporate rituals make the workplace feel both absurd and genuinely threatening.
Apple lists the U.S. release date for season 2 as January 17, 2025. Metacritic gave the returning season an 87 score, and the Emmys awarded Britt Lower Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series and Tramell Tillman Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. See the returning-series comparison.
Best for: Science-fiction viewers, mystery-box audiences, workplace-satire fans, and anyone who enjoys slow-burn world-building and precise production design.
Viewing note: This is not a standalone season. Watch season 1 first and expect season 2 to build on its characters, rules, and unanswered questions.
4. Andor season 2
Why watch: A politically serious espionage drama that happens to be set in the Star Wars universe.
Andor uses its established science-fiction setting to examine surveillance, state violence, resistance, compromise, and the difficult organization of a revolutionary movement. Its interest is not limited to battlefield spectacle. The series is just as concerned with intelligence work, propaganda, bureaucracy, fear, and the private decisions that make public resistance possible.
That political focus gives the season a different texture from much franchise television. Characters are forced to choose between secrecy and trust, principle and effectiveness, and individual safety and collective action. The result is a spy story with a broad historical imagination and an unusually clear interest in how systems of power sustain themselves.
Metacritic’s returning-series table placed season 2 first among the returning shows it reviewed in 2025, with a score of 92. The Television Academy also awarded Dan Gilroy the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series and recognized the season’s visual effects. Read the Metacritic 2025 overview.
Best for: Political-thriller fans, spy-story audiences, morally complex genre viewers, and Star Wars viewers who want adult dramatic stakes.
Viewing note: Begin with season 1. The second season rewards familiarity with the characters, organizations, and political situation already established.
5. The Studio
Why watch: A fast, densely written comedy about the panic behind modern Hollywood decision-making.

Matt Remick becomes the head of a struggling film studio and immediately finds himself trapped between artistic ambition, corporate demands, celebrity egos, prestige signaling, and the economics of franchises. The show turns executive meetings, development arguments, publicity events, and creative compromises into engines of embarrassment.
Its targets are broad but specific: the fear of making an expensive mistake, the language of cultural importance, the dependence on recognizable intellectual property, and the uneasy relationship between filmmakers and the executives who finance them. The jokes move quickly, but the satire works because the underlying pressures are recognizable. Everyone is trying to protect a career, a brand, or a project while pretending the decision is purely artistic.
The Studio won Outstanding Comedy Series at the 2025 Emmys, Seth Rogen won for lead actor, and the series set a comedy record with 13 total Emmy wins. See the Television Academy’s account of the wins.
Best for: Comedy viewers, film-industry audiences, and fans of embarrassment-driven ensemble farce.

Why watch: It continues to make the Deborah Vance–Ava relationship funny, combative, and emotionally credible.
The fourth season preserves the show’s mix of sharp jokes, career conflict, generational friction, and genuine affection. Deborah’s need for control and Ava’s ambition remain sources of conflict, but their relationship has enough history to make every professional disagreement carry personal consequences.
Hacks understands that show-business partnerships are rarely just business. The characters compete for authority, recognition, and creative freedom while also needing one another. That combination allows the comedy to land without reducing the relationship to a simple mentor-versus-protégé formula.
Metacritic ranked season 4 second among its returning-series comparison, with a 91 score. Jean Smart won her third consecutive Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy, and Hannah Einbinder won Outstanding Supporting Actress. See the critical comparison for returning shows.
Best for: Character-driven comedy, show-business stories, sharp dialogue, and viewers who want a strong emotional core beneath the jokes.
Viewing note: The season is most rewarding when watched after the earlier episodes, since the comedy depends on the accumulated history between Deborah and Ava.
7. The Rehearsal season 2
Why watch: It remains one of television’s strangest examinations of control, consent, empathy, and the urge to rehearse uncertain situations.
Nathan Fielder’s series continues to blur documentary, performance, simulation, and ethical experiment. Its apparent premise is often only the starting point: elaborate preparations lead to new scenarios, which expose the limits of preparation itself. People try to control their environments and other people’s reactions, but the attempt frequently produces more uncertainty rather than less.
That makes The Rehearsal particularly relevant to documentary-minded viewers. It does not offer straightforward observational nonfiction, and its constructed situations require viewers to think carefully about performance and consent. Its value comes from the questions it leaves behind: What does it mean to help someone by scripting their choices? When does empathy become manipulation? Can a simulation prepare anyone for the messiness of real life?
Metacritic gave season 2 an 88 score and placed it among the year’s leading returning shows. TV Guide also included it among its honorable mentions for 2025. Compare its critical standing with other returning series.

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
Best for: Adventurous viewers, hybrid nonfiction fans, and audiences interested in uncomfortable conceptual comedy.
Content note: The show’s humor often comes from awkwardness, power imbalances, and situations whose ethical boundaries are intentionally unclear.

8. Dying for Sex
Why watch: A tender, candid limited series about friendship, sexuality, independence, and mortality.
The story follows Molly after she receives a stage-four metastatic breast-cancer diagnosis. With encouragement from her friend Nikki, Molly decides to explore sexuality and independence. The series balances grief with humor and treats intimacy not as a side plot but as part of the character’s attempt to reclaim agency.
Its emotional strength comes from the friendship at its center. The show is interested in the practical and emotional realities of serious illness, but it also allows its characters desire, embarrassment, anger, playfulness, and contradiction. That tonal balance keeps it from becoming either a conventional inspirational drama or an unrelentingly bleak illness narrative.
Metacritic gave Dying for Sex an 83 score, and it received a 2025 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. See its position in Metacritic’s 2025 television data.
Best for: Viewers seeking emotionally direct limited drama, friendship stories, and performances that balance grief with humor.
Content note: Cancer, mortality, sex, and end-of-life themes are central rather than incidental.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. The White Lotus season 3
Why watch: The anthology remains a reliable destination for class satire, beautiful locations, and an ensemble mystery built around privilege.
The third season relocates the series to a new luxury-resort setting and uses that environment to examine the behavior of wealthy guests, the people serving them, and the social structures that allow comfort to coexist with exploitation. As with the earlier seasons, the resort is both a vacation fantasy and a pressure chamber.

Best for: Viewers who enjoy class satire, ensemble mysteries, striking locations, and season-by-season anthologies.

10. Taskmaster series 19
Why watch: A low-stakes, highly rewatchable alternative to the year’s heavier prestige dramas.
The 19th series demonstrates why the British task-comedy format remains so durable. Jason Mantzoukas, Mathew Baynton, Fatiha El-Ghorri, Rosie Ramsey, and Stevie Martin compete in Alex Horne’s elaborate challenges while Greg Davies judges the results with deliberately inconsistent authority.
The pleasure comes from the contrast between the simple instructions and the contestants’ wildly different interpretations. Ingenuity, panic, pettiness, physical comedy, and accidental brilliance all count. Unlike a conventional competition series, the appeal is not primarily who wins. It is the strange route each person takes toward a solution and the group’s reaction when the task exposes their personality.
TV Guide selected series 19 as one of its ten best shows of 2025. See TV Guide’s 2025 recommendations.

- Pee-wee as Himself: The strongest documentary-oriented alternative in this group, especially for viewers interested in a public performer’s life, persona, and legacy.
- Forever: A highly regarded romantic coming-of-age option for viewers who want intimacy and adolescent perspective rather than institutional or political drama.
- The Lowdown: A useful genre-specific alternative for viewers looking for investigative or crime-driven storytelling.
- Long Story Short: Consider it for an animated or family-centered alternative to the live-action dramas above.

Where can I watch these shows?
