These 38 family-friendly Halloween movies range from gentle animated monster comedies to darker stop-motion fantasies and supernatural comedies. The best choice depends on a child’s age, scare tolerance, and sensitivity to themes such as death, grief, frightening imagery, language, or adult humor.

Family-friendly Halloween covers a wide range: gentle monster comedies for preschoolers, mildly spooky mysteries for elementary-age children, and darker stop-motion fantasies or supernatural comedies better suited to tweens and teens. The 38 movies and specials below are organized by likely audience and scare level rather than treated as equally suitable for every child.

Use the age bands as starting points, not guarantees. A child who enjoys suspense may be comfortable with Monster House but dislike the grief in Frankenweenie; another may find the button-eye imagery in Coraline more disturbing than a live-action ghost comedy. When in doubt, preview the film and pay attention to the content notes.

Quick guide: all 38 Halloween movies and specials

# Movie or special Format and audience Scare level and reasons to watch
1 The Corpse Bride (2005) Stop-motion fantasy; older elementary children, tweens, and teens Macabre but musical and romantic, with a dead-bride premise and gothic imagery.
2 Monsters, Inc. (2001) Animated comedy; one of the safest all-ages choices Gentle monster imagery, friendship, and a warm family-like story rather than horror.
3 Beetlejuice (1988) Live-action supernatural comedy; older children with a parent preview Macabre imagery, adult humor, language, and stronger scares than its comic reputation suggests.
4 Halloweentown (1998) Live-action Disney Channel fantasy; younger school-age viewers Light witch fantasy with accessible peril and a distinctly nostalgic Halloween atmosphere.
5 Twitches (2005) Fantasy adventure; older children and tweens Twin witches, magical danger, and a strong sisterhood story.
6 The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) Stop-motion musical; elementary-age children through adults Spooky visuals and an intense villain, but broad family appeal and memorable songs.
7 Monster High: The Movie (2022) Teen-oriented fantasy musical; tweens and young teens Stylized monsters, school drama, fantasy conflict, and a stronger fit for fans of the Mattel property.
8 Ghostbusters (1984) Live-action supernatural comedy; older children, tweens, and teens Funny and iconic, but includes ghosts, monsters, stronger language, adult jokes, and frightening imagery.
9 Ghostbusters II (1989) Live-action sequel; older children, tweens, and teens Similar caution level to the original, with recognizable characters and broad supernatural comedy.
10 Hocus Pocus (1993) Live-action witch comedy; older children and tweens with discretion Three resurrected witches, music, mild peril, scary sequences, language, and suggestive jokes.
11 Hocus Pocus 2 (2022) Live-action sequel; older children and tweens A natural companion to the original, with returning witches, magic, comedy, and peril.
12 Goosebumps (2015) Live-action monster adventure; children who enjoy mild scares Fast-moving R. L. Stine-inspired creatures and suspense that may be intense for younger viewers.
13 Werewolf by Night (2022) Marvel monster special; older tweens and teens Darker presentation and more intense creature violence; not a small-child pick.
14 The Scream Team (2002) Live-action supernatural family film; elementary-age viewers Children help a deceased grandfather move on, combining ghosts with themes of grief and family.
15 LEGO Star Wars: Terrifying Tales (2021) Animated anthology; younger viewers and Star Wars fans Comedic LEGO-style spoofs of horror conventions make the scares relatively low intensity.
16 Nightbooks (2021) Dark fantasy; older children and tweens Children are trapped by a threatening witch, creating sustained suspense and magical peril.
17 Frankenweenie (2012) Stop-motion fantasy; older children, tweens, and teens A boy revives his beloved dog; emotionally heavy loss and macabre imagery merit a preview.
18 Toy Story of Terror! (2013) Animated special; younger children and short movie nights A roughly 25-minute creepy motel mystery featuring familiar Toy Story characters.
19 Igor (2008) Animated comedy; older children and tweens Quirky mad-scientist humor with an offbeat, slightly macabre tone.
20 Muppets Haunted Mansion (2021) Live-action/puppet special; mixed-age families Gonzo and the Muppets bring familiar comedy to a haunted-house story with limited fright.
21 Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) Stop-motion creature comedy; children and adults Mild suspense, inventive humor, and strong cross-generational appeal.
22 Monsters vs. Aliens (2009) Animated action comedy; elementary-age viewers Monster characters and action replace horror, making it accessible to many younger viewers.
23 Monster House (2006) Animated haunted-house adventure; older elementary children and tweens Genuine suspense and peril make it more intense than a typical gentle monster comedy.
24 Phantom of the Megaplex (2000) Live-action mystery; elementary-age viewers and tweens A Disney Channel mystery inspired by The Phantom of the Opera, useful for children who prefer clues to monsters.
25 The Munsters (2022) Colorful live-action comedy; older children and tweens PG eccentric family humor and classic monster references; its length may test younger viewers.
26 Hotel Transylvania (2012) Animated comedy; younger children and mixed-age families Highly accessible monster humor built around a warm parent-child relationship.
27 Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (2022) Animated sequel; younger children and families A body-swap story that extends the franchise’s gentle monster comedy.
28 The Addams Family (1991) Live-action dark comedy; older children, tweens, and teens Macabre jokes, stylized violence, and an unusually strong family-bonding theme.
29 Addams Family Values (1993) Live-action dark comedy; older children and teens Sharper satire and a more prominent Wednesday storyline make it a better fit for older viewers.
30 The Addams Family (2019) Animated dark comedy; children, tweens, and families More accessible visually than the 1991 film, though its humor remains macabre and eccentric.
31 The Canterville Ghost (1996) Live-action literary supernatural comedy; older children and families A niche Oscar Wilde adaptation for viewers who want a classic ghost story.
32 Scooby-Doo: The Movie (2002) Live-action mystery adventure; older elementary children and tweens Broad comedy, Mystery Inc. antics, and supernatural elements without full horror.
33 Scoob! (2020) Animated adventure; children and families Low-to-moderate scares, modern animation, and an expanded Hanna-Barbera superhero premise.
34 Coraline (2009) Stop-motion dark fantasy; older children and tweens Disturbing button-eye imagery, menace, and intense sequences make this unsuitable as a preschool recommendation.
35 Casper (1995) Live-action ghost fantasy; school-age children Friendly ghosts, friendship, acceptance, grief, and some sad or spooky material.
36 Monster Family (2017) Animated comedy; younger viewers A family transforms into monsters in a playful, low-scare story about family and identity.
37 It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) Animated special; preschoolers, early elementary viewers, and families A roughly 25-minute classic about costumes, trick-or-treating, friendship, and Linus’s belief in the Great Pumpkin.
38 100% Wolf (2020) Animated comedy; younger viewers and elementary-age children A werewolf heir becomes a poodle in a playful identity and self-acceptance story with little horror emphasis.

Best Halloween picks for preschoolers and younger children

Start with animation, familiar characters, and comedy rather than ghosts, death, or sustained suspense. Even these gentler choices can contain brief peril or spooky images, so a child’s temperament matters.

  • Monsters, Inc.: The monsters are more funny than frightening, and the central relationship emphasizes friendship, protection, and family. It is one of the most reliable choices for a child who wants Halloween decorations and costumes without actual horror.
  • Hotel Transylvania: Dracula’s relationship with his daughter gives the movie an emotional center that is easier for young viewers to follow than a conventional haunted-house plot. The monster designs are colorful and comic.
  • Hotel Transylvania: Transformania: The body-swap premise keeps the focus on physical comedy and family dynamics. It can be watched on its own, although children who enjoy the first film may prefer a franchise double feature.
  • Muppets Haunted Mansion: This is a strong mixed-age choice when adults want Halloween atmosphere without a serious scare level. The haunted-house setup supplies the seasonal setting, while the Muppets keep the tone playful.
  • It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown: At about 25 minutes, it works well before bedtime or as part of a larger Halloween evening. The story is about costumes, candy, friendship, and Linus’s hopeful belief rather than monsters.
  • Toy Story of Terror!: The short runtime is useful for children who are not ready for a feature-length spooky story. The motel mystery is creepy, but familiar toys make the danger easier for many children to manage.
  • 100% Wolf: The werewolf setup is mostly a vehicle for a transformation comedy. A child who likes animal characters or stories about fitting in may respond better to this than to a ghost movie.
  • Monsters vs. Aliens: This is action-comedy with monster imagery, not a horror film. It suits children who want colorful creatures and adventure but are not ready for a haunted house.
  • Monster Family: The family transformation gives young viewers a low-intensity way to enjoy Halloween-style monsters. The emphasis is on identity and family rather than fear.
  • Scoob!: The animated presentation and low-to-moderate scare level make it approachable for family viewing. Its expanded superhero premise is more action-oriented than traditional Scooby-Doo mystery.

Best for elementary-age children ready for mild scares

These films add ghosts, mysteries, creatures, or more sustained suspense. They are not universally safe for every young child, but they offer a useful middle tier between gentle animation and darker tween fare.

  • Halloweentown: A light witch fantasy and an accessible live-action starting point for children who want spells and supernatural characters without full horror.
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas: The stop-motion design is visually spooky, and the villain can be intense for sensitive children. The musical structure, comedy, and ultimately family-friendly story make it a dependable choice for many elementary-age viewers.
  • Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit: The were-rabbit premise sounds scarier than the finished film feels. Stop-motion comedy, eccentric inventions, and the friendship between Wallace and Gromit make it effective for both children and adults.
  • Casper: The friendly-ghost premise is approachable, but the film also deals with loss and acceptance. Preview it if grief-related stories are especially difficult for your child.
  • Phantom of the Megaplex: Choose this for a child who enjoys solving a mystery. Its phantom setup creates suspense without relying on a parade of monsters.
  • The Scream Team: Children helping a deceased grandfather move on gives this movie a gentler supernatural angle, but the death-related premise may matter more to some children than the actual ghost effects.
  • Goosebumps: This is a good next step for children who already enjoy mild scares. The pace is quick and the creatures are numerous, so younger or easily startled viewers may find it overwhelming.
  • Monster House: The haunted house is a genuine threat, not merely a backdrop for jokes. Older elementary children and tweens are more likely to enjoy its suspense than preschool viewers.
  • Igor: Its mad-scientist setting is quirky and animated rather than terrifying, but the offbeat humor and macabre premise make it a better fit for older elementary children than very young viewers.
  • The Canterville Ghost: This is a less obvious selection for families who want literary supernatural comedy. Its Oscar Wilde source gives it a different flavor from monster franchises and Halloween cartoons.
  • The Munsters: The 2022 film is colorful and rated PG, but its length and eccentric humor may work better with older children and tweens than with a restless preschool audience.
  • LEGO Star Wars: Terrifying Tales: The anthology spoofs horror conventions in a LEGO setting, reducing the intensity for many children while giving Star Wars fans a clear reason to watch.

Best for tweens and teens

These choices have stronger macabre imagery, darker themes, more intense creatures, language, adult jokes, or sustained menace. They can still be appropriate for a family movie night when the household’s scare tolerance is higher, but the label family-friendly should not be read as scare-free.

  • The Corpse Bride: Tim Burton’s stop-motion fantasy is musical and stylized, but the dead-bride premise and gothic afterlife imagery place it above the gentlest children’s selections.
  • Beetlejuice: The comedy is iconic, but parents should preview it for younger viewers because of macabre imagery, adult humor, language, and stronger supernatural material.
  • Twitches: The twin-witches adventure offers magical peril and a strong sisterhood theme. It is a natural choice for tweens who have outgrown the gentlest Disney Channel Halloween stories.
  • Monster High: The Movie: This teen-oriented fantasy musical is aimed more squarely at tweens and young teens, especially viewers already interested in the Monster High world.
  • Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II: Both combine supernatural adventure with comedy, but neither should be assumed to be suitable for all young children. Ghosts, monsters, stronger language, adult jokes, and frightening imagery are part of the experience. Watch the original first if you want the most culturally familiar entry, then use the sequel as a follow-up.
  • Hocus Pocus and Hocus Pocus 2: The two films make an obvious double feature. The original remains the essential Halloween watch, while the sequel brings back the Sanderson sisters for another musical witch comedy. The first film is rated PG in the United States for scary sequences and language, and parental-guide material also notes mild violence, profanity, suggestive material, and frightening scenes.
  • Werewolf by Night: This Marvel special has a darker visual presentation and more intense creature violence than the comic monster films in this list. It belongs with older tweens and teens, not small children.
  • Nightbooks: Children trapped by a threatening witch create sustained suspense rather than occasional Halloween decoration. It is best for viewers who actively enjoy tense fantasy.
  • Frankenweenie: The story of reviving a beloved dog is emotionally heavier than its family label may suggest. Parents should consider how their child responds to animal loss, death, and macabre imagery before choosing it.
  • The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993): These are separate films, not alternate versions of one entry. The first is a macabre live-action comedy with stylized violence and a surprisingly warm family core. Addams Family Values is sharper and more satirical, particularly in Wednesday’s storyline, so it is generally the better choice for older children and teens.
  • The Addams Family (2019): This is a separate animated adaptation. Its visual style may be more accessible than the 1991 live-action film, but the macabre jokes and eccentric behavior still make it a better fit for children who already enjoy spooky humor.
  • Coraline: Do not use the PG rating as a shortcut for gentleness. The film involves a child being lured into an alternate world, button-eye imagery, menace, and intense frightening sequences. It is an excellent older-child or tween selection for viewers who enjoy dark fantasy, but it is not a preschool recommendation.

Franchise picks and easy double features

Hocus Pocus + Hocus Pocus 2

Choose this pair when the goal is a classic witch-centered Halloween night. The original is the stronger cultural anchor, while the sequel works best after viewers know the Sanderson sisters. Because the films include scary sequences, language, mild violence, suggestive jokes, and frightening moments, preview them for younger children.

The Addams Family (1991) + Addams Family Values

This pairing suits older children, tweens, and teens who prefer dark humor to conventional scares. The first film establishes the eccentric family; the sequel pushes the satire further. The animated The Addams Family (2019) is a separate, more contemporary option for families who prefer animation.

Ghostbusters + Ghostbusters II

These films provide recognizable ghosts, monsters, and supernatural comedy, but their older live-action tone includes content that can surprise parents who remember them only as nostalgic family entertainment. They are better for older children and teens than for very young viewers.

Hotel Transylvania + Hotel Transylvania: Transformania

This is the gentler franchise marathon. Begin with the original’s parent-child story and continue with the body-swap sequel if the first film is a hit. It works better for younger children than most live-action supernatural franchises.

Halloweentown + Twitches

These Disney Channel fantasy picks are useful for children who want witches, spells, and magical worlds without jumping straight to darker films. Twitches has more fantasy peril and is better suited to older children and tweens.

Stop-motion night: The Nightmare Before Christmas, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and The Corpse Bride

Stop-motion does not automatically mean gentle. Start with Wallace & Gromit for comedy, move to The Nightmare Before Christmas for a musical with spooky imagery, and save The Corpse Bride for older children who are comfortable with gothic themes.

Parent content notes worth checking first

Coraline: The PG rating covers thematic elements, scary images, language, and suggestive humor, but the frightening content can feel severe to sensitive children. The alternate-world threat and button-eye imagery are the key issues.

Hocus Pocus: It is a Halloween favorite, not a scare-free children’s movie. The U.S. rating is PG for scary sequences and language, with additional mild violence, profanity, suggestive material, and frightening scenes noted in parental-guide information.

Frankenweenie: The emotional impact of losing and reviving a dog may be the deciding factor for a child who is less bothered by visual spookiness.

Werewolf by Night: Reserve it for older tweens and teens because of its darker presentation and more intense creature violence.

The Corpse Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas: Their musical, stylized presentation softens the horror for many viewers, but dead characters, gothic designs, and villain imagery can still be upsetting.

How to choose the right movie tonight

  1. Start with the child’s actual tolerance. Ask whether they are comfortable with ghosts, monsters, villains, death-related themes, or suspense. A child who loves Halloween costumes may still dislike frightening imagery.
  2. Choose the format before the title. A 25-minute special such as It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown or Toy Story of Terror! is a better first step than a feature film for a young child or a short attention span.
  3. Move up gradually. Try Monsters, Inc., Hotel Transylvania, or Muppets Haunted Mansion before Casper, Goosebumps, or Monster House. Save Coraline, Beetlejuice, and Werewolf by Night for children who are ready for darker material.
  4. Check emotional themes, not just fright. Death, grief, animal loss, and family separation may matter more than a movie’s monster count. This is especially relevant to Casper, The Scream Team, and Frankenweenie.
  5. Preview or watch together. A parent can pause, explain a joke, skip a disturbing moment, or switch to a gentler title without turning the movie night into a bad surprise.

Where to watch the 38 titles

Streaming availability is not permanent. The original list’s service references were published on October 27, 2025, so they should be treated as a historical snapshot rather than a promise of availability for an August 12, 2026 movie night. Rights also vary by country, and a title may be available to rent or buy even when it is not included with a subscription.

Before choosing a film, check the official catalog for the service you use or a current availability index in your country. Disney+ maintains seasonal family Halloween collections, making it a sensible place to check for Disney, Pixar, Disney Channel, and related titles, but a seasonal collection does not establish that every listed movie will remain available on a particular date. The same caution applies to Netflix, Paramount+, Peacock, Max, Hulu, Apple TV, Tubi, and Amazon Prime Video.

If a family wants the same favorite every October, physical media avoids the uncertainty of rotating streaming rights. Compare the exact edition rather than assuming that every listing contains the same bonus features, cut, or format. Relevant searches include Hocus Pocus DVD, The Nightmare Before Christmas Blu-ray, and Hotel Transylvania DVD; inventory, seller, region, and edition details should be checked before purchase.

Bottom line

For the gentlest starting points, choose Monsters, Inc., Hotel Transylvania, Muppets Haunted Mansion, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, or Toy Story of Terror!. For mild scares, try Halloweentown, Casper, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, or Phantom of the Megaplex. Older children and teens can graduate to Hocus Pocus, Ghostbusters, the Addams family movies, The Corpse Bride, or Coraline—with a parent check for the darker titles.

Frequently Asked Questions

For the gentlest Halloween movie night, start with Monsters, Inc., Hotel Transylvania, Muppets Haunted Mansion, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, or Toy Story of Terror!. These use comedy, familiar characters, or a short runtime to limit the intensity, although individual sensitivities vary.

Is Coraline appropriate for young children?

Coraline is better for older children and tweens, not preschoolers. Its PG rating includes scary images and thematic elements, but the alternate-world threat, button-eye imagery, menace, and intense sequences can be genuinely disturbing.

Is Hocus Pocus family-friendly?

Yes, but use discretion. Hocus Pocus is rated PG in the United States for scary sequences and language. It also includes mild violence, profanity, suggestive jokes, and frightening scenes, so it is a stronger fit for older children and tweens than for very young viewers.

Which Addams Family movies are included?

The list includes three separate Addams-related entries: the 1991 live-action The Addams Family, the 1993 sequel Addams Family Values, and the 2019 animated The Addams Family. They should not be treated as different versions of one movie.

Where can I stream these Halloween movies?

Do not rely on the October 27, 2025 service listings as a guarantee for August 12, 2026. Streaming rights change by date and country. Check the service’s current official catalog or a current availability index immediately before watching.

The Bottom Line

The best first pick depends on scare tolerance: use Monsters, Inc. or Hotel Transylvania for young children, Halloweentown or Casper for mild scares, and Hocus Pocus or The Nightmare Before Christmas for an older, mixed-age audience. Treat Coraline, Beetlejuice, Ghostbusters, Frankenweenie, and Werewolf by Night as parent-preview titles rather than universally child-safe choices.
