Recommended Free Tools
The best legal replacement for SolarMovie is a combination of JustWatch and Tubi. JustWatch replaces the search function by showing where a movie or series is legally available, while Tubi provides a large free, ad-supported catalog for on-demand viewing. If you prefer live channels, choose Pluto TV; if you have a library card, Kanopy or Hoopla may be better than any commercial service.
There is no dependable official SolarMovie replacement domain. The SolarMovie name has historically been used by unauthorized movie and television streaming or linking sites, so this guide does not recommend mirrors, clones, or unlicensed streaming pages. The services below are organized by what you actually want to do: watch free movies, find one specific title, borrow documentaries from a library, rent a new release, or subscribe to a broad paid catalog.
Quick recommendations: Free on-demand movies: Tubi. Free live TV: Pluto TV. Library-card documentaries and independent films: Kanopy. Library borrowing and downloads: Hoopla. One specific movie: JustWatch. New releases without another subscription: Fandango or a Prime Video rental.
What should replace SolarMovie?
A useful SolarMovie alternative needs to do more than display a large list of movie titles. It should have a transparent operator, identifiable official apps or websites, a clear access model, reliable search, support for the reader’s devices, and a catalog obtained through legitimate licensing or library lending.

- 120 Inch Viewing Screen :Features 16:9 aspect ratio with a 120 inch diagonal, offering an expansive 104" x 58" viewing area
That immediately separates the recommendations into several types:
- Streaming guides: JustWatch tells you where a title is available but usually does not play the movie itself.
- Free, ad-supported streamers: Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex, and selected Fandango or Prime Video titles let you watch without a conventional subscription, in exchange for advertising.
- Library lending services: Kanopy and Hoopla provide access through participating libraries or universities.
- Subscription services: Netflix, Prime Video, Max, Peacock, Disney+, Criterion Channel, and MUBI offer catalogs for a recurring fee.
- Transactional stores: Fandango, Prime Video, YouTube, Apple TV, and similar services let you rent or buy one title without maintaining another monthly subscription.
The recommendations in this article are aimed primarily at viewers in the United States. Catalogs, prices, devices, library participation, and even service availability can differ in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other markets. A title can also disappear when a licensing agreement expires.
Is there an official SolarMovie domain?
There is no authoritative, dependable official replacement domain that readers should use. SolarMovie has historically referred to unauthorized movie and TV streaming or linking websites. In one Australian court proceeding, films listed on a SolarMovie site were found to be available without the copyright owners’ licenses; the Motion Picture Association has also identified SolarMovie domains in piracy-related submissions. See the Australian court record hosted by WIPO and the MPA’s notorious markets report.
That does not prove that every domain using the SolarMovie name is controlled by one operator. Domain ownership, copies, content, and availability change frequently. A current website using the name should not automatically be treated as the original, official, or licensed service. The safest approach is to stop looking for a SolarMovie mirror and use a recognized provider or a legal search guide instead.
Best free legal SolarMovie alternatives
1. Tubi: best free on-demand replacement
Best for: viewers who want the closest legal equivalent to a searchable, free, on-demand movie and TV catalog.
Tubi is the strongest first choice for most former SolarMovie users. It is free and ad-supported, does not require a subscription or credit card for its advertised free service, and carries movies and TV shows from studio and independent sources. Tubi says it is available on the web, phones, consoles, smart TVs, and streaming devices.
- Cost: free with advertising.
- Account: basic access is promoted without a credit card; an account adds features such as watch-list syncing and personalization.
- Devices: web, Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, Samsung and Sony smart TVs, among others listed by Tubi.
- Strength: on-demand viewing rather than waiting for a scheduled channel.
- Limitation: advertisements interrupt playback, the catalog rotates, and newly released theatrical movies are not guaranteed to be available.
Tubi’s claims about a large catalog should be understood as provider-reported figures rather than an independently audited count. Availability also varies by country. For a documentary viewer, Tubi is worth checking for general factual programming and older films, but Kanopy and Hoopla are often more reliable starting points for curated documentaries.
2. Pluto TV: best for free live channels
Best for: viewers who enjoy channel surfing and want live programming as well as on-demand movies.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

It is a better match for someone who wants to turn on the television and browse what is playing than for someone searching for one exact film.
- Cost: free with advertising.
- Format: live channels plus on-demand programming.
- Strength: a familiar scheduled-TV experience without a paid subscription.
- Limitation: a particular movie may be scheduled rather than immediately available, and channel lineups vary by market.
Pluto TV is not a direct substitute for a large, instantly searchable movie archive. Use JustWatch when the title itself matters; use Pluto TV when the live-channel experience is the attraction.
3. The Roku Channel: best free hybrid for Roku households
Best for: viewers who already use Roku, compatible Samsung TVs, or Fire TV and want free on-demand titles alongside a live-channel guide.
The Roku Channel combines free movies and shows, Roku Originals, and a substantial live-TV guide. Roku also makes the service available through its website and selected mobile and TV platforms. Its official pages describe the free catalog and live-channel selection using figures that can change, so do not treat those numbers as permanent.
- Cost: free programming with advertising; some content or partner channels may require payment.
- Strength: combines on-demand viewing and live channels in one interface.
- Devices: Roku devices, the website, compatible Samsung TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and mobile apps according to Roku’s device guidance.
- Limitation: availability differs by device and region, and not every item shown in the broader interface is free.
4. Plex: best for free streaming plus personal media
Best for: people who want free licensed movies and live TV but also want to organize their own legally acquired media collection.
Plex offers free ad-supported movies, shows, and live TV. Its separate personal-media-server features can organize video files that the user has the right to store and watch. Plex says basic free viewing does not require an account, although an account adds watchlist and personalization features.
- Cost: free with ads for Plex-provided programming; optional paid Plex features are separate.
- Devices: browsers, smart TVs, streaming players, game consoles, phones, tablets, and more.
- Strength: a useful combination of free streaming and personal-media organization.
- Limitation: the free catalog is separate from a user’s own media server, and Plex Pass does not remove advertisements from Plex-provided free content.
Read Plex’s video-on-demand FAQ for country and catalog qualifications before relying on it as a primary service.
5. Kanopy: best free ad-free service for documentaries
Best for: documentaries, independent films, classics, international cinema, educational content, and viewers who prefer not to sit through commercial breaks.

Kanopy is often the best SolarMovie alternative for documentary-focused readers who have access through a participating public library or university. It is not a conventional unlimited commercial streamer: eligibility, available titles, and viewing rules are determined partly by the institution that provides access.
- Cost: no conventional subscription payment for eligible library or university users.
- Ads: ad-free viewing.
- Access: a participating library card or university login is required.
- Strength: curated documentaries, independent films, classics, and international titles.
- Limitation: not every library participates, catalogs vary, and some institutions use tickets or play credits for selected titles.
Some Kanopy public-library programs offer unlimited viewing for particular titles, and Kanopy Kids titles may be unlimited for participating users. That does not mean every film is unlimited. To check eligibility, choose Get started, select Find your library, search by library name, city, or ZIP code, and follow the card or university-login instructions. Kanopy’s library signup guidance, ticket and viewing rules, and supported-device page explain the details.
6. Hoopla: best for library borrowing and downloads
Best for: viewers with a participating library card who want to borrow movies, TV, books, comics, music, and audiobooks, often with offline viewing.

- 1. 【Lightweight & Foldable 16:9 Screen】 Designed for casual indoor and outdoor use. This high-density polyester projection screen offers a wide viewing angle. It is incredibly lightweight and folds compactly to fit in your own backpack, making it the perfect budget-friendly choice for camping, backyard movie nights, or temporary setups.
- 2. 【Important: Material & Best Environment】 To achieve extreme portability and a highly cost-effective design, this screen is made to be thin and lightweight. IT IS NOT a thick, heavy-duty professional home theater screen. For the best image quality, we highly recommend using it in completely dark environments or hanging it directly against a solid, opaque wall..
- 3. 【Foldable Design & Crease Removal Guide】 Please note: The screen is shipped folded in basic packaging to minimize costs, so creases are normal upon arrival. To easily remove wrinkles, simply stretch the screen tightly using the included accessories for a few days, or iron it on the LOWEST heat setting with a damp cloth.
- 4. 【What's Included & Wall Safety Warning】 Package includes: 1x Projector Screen, Ropes, Hooks, and Double-Sided Tapes for quick setup (NOTE: Stand, bracket, and carry bag are NOT included). WARNING: Only use the tape on completely smooth surfaces like glass or tile. For painted walls, strictly use ropes or nails to prevent the tape from damaging your wall paint.
- 5. 【Budget-Friendly Casual Viewing】 Built for convenience and extreme value, this minimalist screen is the perfect entry-level accessory for casual family gatherings. If you are a professional cinephile looking for a premium, heavy, wrinkle-free fixed-frame screen with luxury packaging, this highly portable model might not fit your advanced needs.
Hoopla works more like a digital library than a free commercial streaming catalog. A valid participating-library card and email address are required. The library sets borrowing limits, and each title has an expiration period. Many movie titles can be downloaded in the official app when the title supports it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Cost: free through a participating library.
- Account: library card and email registration required.
- Features: streaming, downloads for many titles, casting, and support for web, Chromecast, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, and selected Samsung TV apps.
- Strength: useful for offline viewing and for readers who want more than movies.
- Limitation: monthly borrowing limits and catalog size vary substantially by library, and borrowed titles expire.
Start with Hoopla’s signup page rather than assuming that every library card works.
7. Fandango’s free catalog and rental store
Best for: viewers who want to check free titles but are also willing to rent or buy a new release without adding another monthly subscription.
Fandango combines free ad-supported content with transactional rentals and purchases. Fandango has announced that its consumer entertainment experience is being consolidated under the Fandango brand, including free streaming formerly associated with Fandango at Home. Because branding and URLs may change during that transition, begin at the official Fandango announcement or its current consumer site.
- Cost: selected titles free with ads; most new releases are rentals or purchases.
- Strength: a legal one-off option when a movie is too new for a subscription catalog.
- Limitation: prices vary, payment and an account may be required, and the free catalog is not the same as the rental catalog.
Do not confuse a free title with a rental listing. Check the price, rental period, and purchase label before starting playback.

YouTube can be useful for official movie rentals, purchases, and selected free-with-ads titles. However, a full-length movie uploaded to YouTube is not automatically authorized merely because it plays. YouTube explains that copyright status can be complicated and does not guarantee that every linked work is free of copyright protection. Use the platform’s official movie area and verify the uploader or payment listing; do not treat random uploads as a dependable legal catalog. See YouTube’s copyright guidance.
JustWatch: the best way to find one specific movie
JustWatch is the closest functional replacement for SolarMovie’s discovery experience, but it is important to understand what it does. JustWatch is primarily a legal streaming guide, not a universal free host. It searches participating providers and shows whether a title is available free with ads, through a subscription, for rent, or for purchase.
Use it whenever you have a particular documentary, film, or series in mind:
- Open the U.S. site or select the correct country.
- Search the exact title.
- Confirm the release year, artwork, and format so you do not select a similarly named work.
- Review the listed providers.
- Use the filters for Free, Ads, Subscription, Rent, or Buy.
- Compare quality, price, and whether the result is included in an existing subscription.
- Open the provider’s official website or app and recheck the price or inclusion label before pressing play.
JustWatch also supports filters for provider, release year, genre, rating, and other criteria. A missing title is not proof that it is unavailable everywhere: try an alternate spelling, the original-language title, the director, a library service, or the rental and purchase filters. Licensing changes can also mean that a result seen yesterday is gone today. JustWatch states that it lists legal offers in its service explanation.
Best paid alternatives by catalog
Paid services are not automatically better than free services. They are usually more predictable, have fewer advertisements or more original programming, and may offer better device and download features, but no subscription includes every movie. Choose based on the kind of content you watch.
Netflix: broad general-purpose catalog
Best for: original series, popular entertainment, and a broad general catalog in one subscription.
The official U.S. Netflix help page currently lists Standard with ads at $8.99 per month, Standard at $19.99 per month, and Premium at $26.99 per month. Netflix says Standard supports two simultaneous devices, while Premium supports four and adds 4K/HDR where available. These prices and features are volatile, so verify the plan page at checkout.
Netflix has no free tier, and a title can leave when its licensing period ends. A broad catalog is not the same as a catalog containing every current movie.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Prime Video: subscription, rentals, purchases, and add-on channels
Best for: viewers who want included subscription titles, rentals, purchases, and optional add-on channels in one account.
Prime Video separates titles included with membership from movies and shows available to rent or buy, as well as add-on subscriptions such as Max and Starz. Its official help page explains these categories.
The major drawback is interface confusion: a title may appear in search results even though it costs extra. Before watching, look for the wording that says it is included with membership rather than assuming that Watch now means free to your existing plan.
Max: best for HBO, Warner Bros., and DC
Best for: HBO programming, Warner Bros. movies, DC content, and related premium series.
Max’s current U.S. plan information lists Basic with Ads at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, Standard at $16.99 per month or $169.99 per year, and Premium at $20.99 per month or $209.99 per year. The same page says Standard includes 30 downloads and Premium includes 4K/UHD, Dolby Atmos where available, and 100 downloads. Confirm current pricing and features at Max’s official plan page.
Max is a focused catalog rather than a pay-per-view movie store. Its programming help page explains that movies and shows can rotate and that there is no pay-per-view option inside Max itself; a film absent from the subscription may therefore require a separate rental elsewhere.

Peacock: best for NBCUniversal and sports
Best for: NBC, Bravo, Universal movies, Peacock Originals, live events, and selected sports.
Peacock’s U.S. pages list Select with ads at $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year, Premium with ads at $10.99 per month or $109.99 per year, and Premium Plus at $16.99 per month or $169.99 per year. Peacock says Premium includes movies, Originals, sports, and live events. Premium Plus removes most ads but retains exceptions for some channels, live sports, and selected programming. Check the current official plan page before subscribing.
The lowest Select tier is not a general movie replacement: Peacock’s page says it excludes sports, movies, and Peacock Originals. Choose Premium or another service if those are the reason you are subscribing.
Disney+: best for family and franchise viewing
Best for: Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, and family viewing.
The U.S. Disney+ page currently lists Disney+ with ads at $11.99 per month and Disney+ Premium at $18.99 per month or $189.99 per year. Hulu and ESPN-related access depends on the selected plan or bundle. See the official Disney+ page for current options.
Disney+ is excellent for its franchise strengths but is not a universal replacement for every documentary, independent film, or newly released movie.
Criterion Channel: best for serious film history
Best for: curated classics, international and art-house cinema, documentaries, commentaries, essays, and special features.
The Criterion Channel focuses on curated cinema rather than maximum catalog size. Its programming, restorations, discussions, and supplements make it a much better choice for someone who wants context and film history than for someone simply searching for the largest possible list of current blockbusters.
The U.S. signup page currently displays a seven-day trial, $10.99 per month, and $99.99 per year. Recheck the official signup page because prices and promotions can change.
MUBI: best for curated contemporary and independent cinema
Best for: viewers who prefer a carefully selected international and independent catalog over a mass-market library.
MUBI’s U.S. membership page currently displays $14.99 per month or $119.88 per year, a seven-day trial, no ads, and downloads on iOS and Android. MUBI’s value is selection and curation rather than an assurance that it has every popular title.

How to find newer movies legally
No legitimate free service can promise every newly released movie. A typical release path is theatrical exhibition, rental or purchase, a premium subscription window, and eventual availability through an ad-supported service or library. The timing differs by studio and title.
For a new or obscure film, search JustWatch first. Set the country correctly, then filter by Free, Ads, Subscription, Rent, or Buy. If the film is not included in a service you already pay for, a rental from Fandango or Prime Video is often cheaper than adding a new monthly subscription. Prime Video explicitly distinguishes included titles from rentals, purchases, and add-on channels.
Do not interpret new releases as newly added to a catalog. A film can be new to Netflix but years old, while a current theatrical release may be legally available only to rent or buy.

- Plex: says an account is not required for basic use, while an account enables watchlists and personalization.
- JustWatch: is free to use; account features such as watchlists and notifications are optional.
- Kanopy: requires access through a participating library card or university login, followed by a Kanopy account.
- Hoopla: requires a valid participating-library card and email address.
- Fandango, Prime Video, Netflix, Max, Peacock, Disney+, Criterion Channel, and MUBI: normally require an account for subscription, rental, purchase, or playback management.

Kanopy supports web browsers, iOS, Android, Fire tablets, Apple TV, Android or Google TV, Fire TV, Roku, and selected Samsung TVs, subject to version requirements.
Hoopla supports web playback, Chromecast, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, and Samsung TV apps, and supports downloads for many titles. Pluto TV’s supported devices and channel lineup should be checked in the app store or official site for the country in question.

Why SolarMovie mirrors are a poor substitute
Unlicensed mirror sites create two problems that a legal provider solves: there is no reliable way to verify the operator or rights, and the page can change while you are using it. A site may display a familiar brand, but that does not establish that it is authorized or safe.
The risks are not limited to copyright. The Federal Trade Commission warns that illegal streaming apps and add-ons can spread malware, steal credentials, generate pop-ups and redirects, and expose other devices on a home network. The FBI has separately warned about unofficial streaming devices, pirated content downloads, malicious backdoors, and free VPN applications in its consumer cybersecurity advisory.
A VPN does not change this analysis. It may change the apparent network location, but it does not supply a content license, verify a site’s operator, or remove malware and phishing risks. It also does not guarantee that a provider’s terms permit changing regions.
Streaming safety checklist
- Use the provider’s official website or an app installed from the official device app store.
- Leave a page that demands a browser extension, APK, codec, special media player, or software update before playback.
- Never enter credit-card details into a pop-up claiming that payment verification is required for a supposedly free movie.
- Do not follow CAPTCHA instructions that ask you to open Run, paste commands, or execute code. The FTC says legitimate CAPTCHAs do not ask for this.
- Keep your browser, operating system, streaming device, and security software updated.
- Do not call a phone number shown in a suspicious pop-up or install an unknown browser extension.
- Use strong, unique passwords and multifactor authentication for streaming accounts where available.
If you already clicked a suspicious streaming page
- Close the tab and do not interact with further pop-ups.
- Do not enter credentials, payment information, or a verification code.
- If you downloaded or installed something, disconnect the affected device from the internet if malware is suspected.
- Remove unknown browser extensions and recently installed apps.
- Update trusted security software and run a scan, following the FTC’s malware-exposure guidance.
- From a clean device, change passwords that may have been exposed and enable multifactor authentication.
- Contact your bank or card issuer immediately if payment details were entered.
- Report fraud to the FTC or suspicious cybercrime to IC3 when appropriate.
Services that should not be treated as automatic recommendations
Older alternative lists often mix recognized legal services with unlicensed domains or brands whose current status is unclear. That is why this guide does not link to SolarMovie mirrors, 123Movies-style pages, or other piracy sites.
Crackle’s operating status has been unstable following the liquidation of its former corporate owner, so its availability should not be assumed without a current first-party source. Amazon Freevee should also not be presented automatically as a separate current destination: Freevee content has been folded into the Prime Video experience rather than reliably maintained as the former standalone brand. Similarly, search results for Popcornflix can include domains that are not automatically verified as official. A recognizable name is not enough; use an identifiable operator, current official documentation, and a clear licensing or library-access model.
The same caution applies to claims such as 100% working, virus-free, no buffering, or everything is available. Those are not meaningful guarantees without documented, current testing, and catalog availability changes constantly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SolarMovie legal?
SolarMovie has historically referred to unauthorized movie and television streaming or linking websites. Documented court findings and piracy-market reports have associated SolarMovie domains with unlicensed access. Because different domains and copies may have different operators, the precise status of a particular current site should not be guessed; use a recognized licensed service instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What is the closest free legal alternative to SolarMovie?
Tubi is the closest free on-demand substitute for most viewers. It offers a large ad-supported catalog without a conventional subscription or credit card. Use JustWatch alongside it to find titles that Tubi does not carry.
Is JustWatch a streaming service?
Usually, no. JustWatch is a legal streaming guide that shows where a film or series is available for free with ads, through a subscription, as a rental, or for purchase. It normally directs you to the provider that plays the title.
Can I watch newly released movies legally for free?
Usually not immediately. New films commonly move from theaters to rental or purchase, then to subscription and later ad-supported or library availability. For a particular title, search JustWatch and check the Free, Ads, Subscription, Rent, and Buy filters.
Which SolarMovie alternatives work without a paid subscription?
Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex, selected Fandango titles, and selected Prime Video or YouTube titles are free with ads. Kanopy and Hoopla can be free through a participating library or university, although they require the appropriate login or library card.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I use Kanopy or Hoopla with any library card?
No. Your public library must participate, and each institution controls its catalog, limits, and eligibility. Kanopy generally requires a participating library card or university login. Hoopla requires a valid participating-library card and email registration.
Are free streaming services safe?
Official, identifiable services such as Tubi, Pluto TV, Roku, Plex, Kanopy, and Hoopla are lower-risk choices than unlicensed mirror sites, but no online service should be described as risk-free. Use official websites and apps, avoid unknown downloads, and leave pages that demand extensions, APKs, fake players, payment verification, or command execution.
Does a VPN make an unlicensed streaming site legal?
No. A VPN can change the apparent network location, but it does not provide a content license, verify the operator, or eliminate malware and phishing risks. It also may conflict with a provider’s terms or fail to provide access to a title.
Why did a movie disappear from a streaming service?
Streaming catalogs depend on licensing agreements. A title can expire, move to another provider, become rental-only, or be available in one country but not another. Search the title on JustWatch again and check alternate legal providers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs Freevee still a separate streaming service?
Do not assume that the former standalone Freevee destination is still the correct place to look. Freevee content has been incorporated into the Prime Video experience, so check the current Prime Video interface and official Amazon documentation for free-with-ads titles.
What should I do if I downloaded a fake player from a streaming page?
Stop using the download, disconnect the device if malware is suspected, remove unknown apps or extensions, update trusted security software, and run a scan. From a clean device, change exposed passwords and enable multifactor authentication. Contact your card issuer if payment information was entered.
The Bottom Line
For most former SolarMovie users, start with Tubi for free on-demand viewing and JustWatch for title-by-title discovery. Choose Pluto TV when you want live channels, Kanopy or Hoopla when you have library access, Fandango or Prime Video when you need a single new-release rental, and a paid service such as Netflix, Max, Peacock, Disney+, Criterion Channel, or MUBI according to the catalog you actually watch. The legal route may not provide every movie for free, but it gives you a current answer without the uncertain domains, fake players, redirects, and malware exposure associated with unlicensed mirrors.
