For software-encoding a single YouTube stream, VPS-4 is the cautious starting point among the plans on OVHcloud’s worldwide “VPS 2027” page. It lists 8 vCores and 24 GB of RAM, the largest allocations in that lineup. That is a resource-based recommendation, not a performance guarantee: no cited benchmark establishes which VPS can sustain a particular FFmpeg workload.
If FFmpeg only copies an already encoded stream, rather than decoding and re-encoding it, VPS-2 or VPS-3 may be candidates to test. The right tier depends on your actual input, output settings, filters, and headroom. For demanding transcoding or multiple outputs, OVHcloud points readers toward dedicated servers. Which OVHcloud VPS should you choose?
Start with the job FFmpeg will perform. Stream-copying packets from an already encoded source is substantially different from software video encoding. Choose a plan to test against your real stream, then check CPU, memory, network stability, and recovery behavior before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
| Worldwide plan listing | vCores | RAM | NVMe storage | Public bandwidth | Starting price shown |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VPS-1 | 2 | 4 GB | 40 GB | 500 Mbps | $4.54/month |
| VPS-2 | 4 | 8 GB | 75 GB | 1 Gbps | $8.50/month |
| VPS-3 | 6 | 12 GB | 100 GB | 2 Gbps | $12.32/month |
| VPS-4 | 8 | 24 GB | 200 GB | 3 Gbps | $23.37/month |
These are the configurations and starting prices shown on OVHcloud’s worldwide page when accessed on October 3, 2026. The page labels the lineup “VPS 2027”; regional availability, specifications, and prices may differ or change, so check your country’s checkout page. OVHcloud also lists unlimited traffic, daily backups, and a 99.9% SLA for these plans. Those statements do not guarantee an FFmpeg process or a YouTube ingest session will remain uninterrupted. - 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If FFmpeg will stream-copy
FFmpeg’s stream-copy mode copies packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding them. When the source already matches the desired output, that avoids the CPU work of a software transcode. VPS-2 or VPS-3 are reasonable tiers to test for a simple, single-output copy workload; the available sources do not establish a minimum plan or benchmark these configurations. [FFmpeg documentation]
If FFmpeg will encode video
Software encoding can use far more CPU than packet copying. Demand varies with codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, filters, and number of outputs. VPS-4 is the cautious starting tier among the listed VPS plans, not proof that a particular encode will fit. OVHcloud’s FFmpeg page directs demanding transcoding workloads toward dedicated servers; consider that route if a VPS cannot sustain the encode with CPU headroom. How to size the stream and check capacity
Use YouTube’s ingest guidance for the intended output
YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS. Its published H.264 bitrate recommendations include:
| Output | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 4K at 30 fps | 42 Mbps |
| 4K at 60 fps | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates, not minimum VPS network speeds or measurements of OVHcloud throughput. Allow additional headroom for protocol overhead and variation, then test the route from your VPS location to YouTube. YouTube advises running a speed test, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health. [YouTube live encoder settings]

Test the actual workload, not just the plan specification
- Match your intended output. Use the real codec, resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, filters, audio, and number of outputs. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream.
- Observe resource headroom. During an extended test, watch CPU and memory use alongside dropped frames and stream-health indicators. A plan’s vCore count alone does not show whether a specific encode will run in real time.
- Check sustained network performance. Confirm that upload capacity from the VPS to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint remains comfortably above the stream’s bitrate. A listed public-bandwidth tier is not a measured end-to-end route.
- Include source and storage needs. Account for where the video comes from, local copies, logs, and any files you retain. The plan’s NVMe allocation is not the only factor if media is fetched from elsewhere or stored outside the VPS.
- Test recovery. Simulate an FFmpeg exit and confirm that your process supervisor restarts it and that the stream can reconnect. Separately plan for host, network, source-file, and YouTube ingest interruptions.
What a 24/7 stream needs beyond a VPS plan
A server allocation does not itself keep FFmpeg alive. A continuous stream needs a reliable source, process supervision, monitoring or alerts, and a tested recovery procedure. Daily backups can help recover files or configuration, but they do not restart a crashed FFmpeg process. Likewise, OVHcloud’s listed 99.9% SLA is not an end-to-end uptime commitment for your script, source, or YouTube session. [OVHcloud VPS plans]
For documentaries or other long-form recordings, verify that you have the necessary rights to the video, soundtrack, and any other included material before broadcasting. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions depend on the content and channel; a technically stable stream does not establish that content is permitted or eligible for monetization.

Common problems and what to check
- FFmpeg cannot sustain real-time encoding: check CPU utilization, encoder preset, filters, resolution, and output count. Test a lighter preset or lower output demand; if the workload remains CPU-heavy, consider VPS-4 or a dedicated server.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames: compare actual outbound capacity with the configured bitrate, allow for overhead, and test the route to the chosen ingest endpoint. Review YouTube’s encoder settings and stream-health guidance.
- The stream stops after FFmpeg exits: configure and test process supervision, logging, and restart behavior. Backups are not process supervision.
- The stream fails after a source interruption: check whether the input is still reachable and whether your command or supervisor can recover from that specific failure. Add alerts so an interruption is not mistaken for a healthy broadcast.
- A plan appears adequate on paper but behaves inconsistently: the published bandwidth figure does not prove sustained throughput to YouTube from your specific region. Repeat tests at the actual bitrate and monitor the session over time.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that loops uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to operating your own FFmpeg VPS: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. [StreamNeo]
