For a lean, single-stream Linux VPS running OBS, 4 GB of RAM is a reasonable starting point; choose 8 GB if OBS shares the server with other services, your scene uses several browser or media sources or filters, or you also record or transcode. These are practical estimates, not a published minimum or a tested guarantee. RAM alone cannot ensure a stable stream: CPU and encoder capacity, scene rendering, network throughput, source reliability, and recovery monitoring matter too.
Which OVHcloud VPS size is a sensible starting point?
OVHcloud’s public VPS page, accessed October 3, 2026, labels its plans “VPS 2027.” Its smallest listed plan has 4 GB RAM, making it a plausible starting configuration for one uncomplicated stream—not proof that OBS or YouTube requires exactly 4 GB. The 8 GB plan is a more comfortable choice when the workload is heavier or shares the VM with other applications.
| OVHcloud plan (page accessed October 3, 2026) | RAM | vCores | NVMe storage | Public bandwidth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VPS-1 | 4 GB | 2 | 40 GB | 500 Mbps |
| VPS-2 | 8 GB | 4 | 75 GB | 1 Gbps |
| VPS-3 | 12 GB | 6 | 100 GB | 2 Gbps |
| VPS-4 | 24 GB | 8 | 200 GB | 3 Gbps |
These are a snapshot of OVHcloud’s public plan specifications, not an enduring promise; verify availability, terms, region, and actual configuration when purchasing. The page also advertises unlimited traffic, but that should not be read as a guarantee about every region, service condition, or connection route. See OVHcloud’s VPS plans.
Choose 4 GB for a lean, single-output setup
A static looping image or video with one audio track and a minimal scene is likely to demand fewer resources than a scene with multiple browser overlays, filters, simultaneous recording, or transcoding. This is an engineering inference from OBS’s workload guidance, not a measured RAM comparison. Start with 4 GB if the VPS runs little besides the streaming workload and you can validate it under the exact stream conditions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prefer 8 GB when the workload is busier
Choose 8 GB when OBS runs alongside other services, the scene includes several browser or media sources or filters, or recording and transcoding add work. More memory provides headroom, but it will not fix an overloaded CPU, an unavailable encoder, a weak network route, or a problematic source.
When larger plans make sense
The 12 GB and 24 GB configurations may suit a VPS hosting additional workloads or a more demanding setup, but the plan specifications alone do not establish that either is needed for one YouTube stream. Base an upgrade on observed memory pressure and CPU or encoding behavior. OVHcloud says upgrade choices vary by VPS range and model; consult its VPS upgrade documentation.

Why RAM does not determine stream stability by itself
CPU, encoder, and scene rendering
OBS says its CPU requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its system requirements also caution: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” OBS renders and composites scenes; browser sources, filters, and source complexity can add resource demands. A VM can have free RAM while the encoder or CPU is still overloaded. See the OBS system requirements and OBS encoding-performance troubleshooting.
Do not assume a VPS includes a usable hardware encoder
A hardware encoder can shift encoding work from the CPU to specialized hardware, but that depends on compatible hardware, drivers, and platform support. A VPS listing vCores and RAM does not establish that the guest can use NVENC, Quick Sync, or another hardware encoding path. Verify the specific instance and software configuration before planning around one. OBS’s hardware encoding guidance describes the relevant compatibility considerations.

Network capacity is a separate constraint
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate, RTMPS, testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, and monitoring stream health. Its recommended video ingest bitrates include:
| Video output | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates for ingestion, not RAM requirements or proof of end-to-end reliability; guidance was accessed in 2026 and may change. Allow capacity beyond the nominal video bitrate for protocol overhead and variation, and check the actual route and VPS limits. YouTube says it transcodes live streams automatically into output formats for viewers. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings; it advises: “Make sure to test before you start the live stream.”

How to validate a VPS before relying on it 24/7
- Start with the 4 GB configuration for a lean workload, or 8 GB for the heavier cases above. Treat the choice as an initial estimate, not a certified minimum.
- Confirm what encoding hardware and software the VM actually exposes. Do not select an encoder based only on the plan name or vCore count.
- Run the exact intended workload. Test the target resolution, frame rate, codec, scene, sources, and audio, including any recording or additional services that will run in production.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and host resource behavior during the test. Look for memory pressure as well as CPU or encoding overload and network instability; more RAM is useful only when memory is the limiting resource.
- Plan recovery and monitoring for continuous operation. A process supervisor, reconnect handling, source reliability checks, and a recovery procedure matter when a stream is expected to run around the clock. The cited sources do not establish a universally safe RAM margin, test duration, or uptime guarantee.
What changes the cost and upgrade decision?
Compare more than RAM when selecting a plan: vCores, storage, public bandwidth, regional availability, and price all matter, as do whether the guest has a usable hardware encoding path and whether it must host other services or record. OVHcloud’s public configurations are a checked snapshot, not a permanent price or availability quote. Its upgrade options depend on the selected range and model. A U.S.-specific support article updated February 14, 2025 described upgrade availability and limitations for named U.S. regions at that time; it should not be generalized to every region or current policy. Check the upgrade guide and regional purchase details before committing.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to configure and maintain an encoder on an OVHcloud VPS, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. No computer or home internet connection has to stay on. A slot streams what you uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
