The VPS must sustain the selected bitrate and monthly data use; the right CPU plan depends on whether FFmpeg copies the video or transcodes it.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available, a prepared video, and the stream URL and key assigned in YouTube Live Control Room. Account eligibility can vary; confirm your channel can go live before building the server setup.
- An Indian VPS plan that permits continuous streaming and has enough outbound transfer, sustained network throughput, storage, and CPU for your chosen FFmpeg workflow.
- FFmpeg installed on the server with support for the input format and RTMPS connection you plan to use. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery; it uses TLS, and Google documents port 443 and the correct server hostname for SNI. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide explains the connection requirements.
Use the endpoint and key YouTube currently assigns to your stream rather than copying an ingest address from an old tutorial. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, put it in screenshots, or expose it in scripts or logs accessible to other users.
Choose stream settings YouTube can accept
YouTube’s encoder guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Select the bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate instead of treating one command’s values as universal. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for 1080p30, and 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p30. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for other formats and settings.
The example below encodes H.264 at 30 fps with a two-second GOP. Its 4.5 Mbps video bitrate is illustrative, not a YouTube recommendation; use a bitrate appropriate to your chosen output and leave network headroom. It is a starting command shape, not a tested universal configuration.

Prepare and start the FFmpeg stream
1. Confirm the source file and output plan
Decide whether to preserve the file’s existing encoded streams or re-encode them. Stream copy can save CPU when the input codec, dimensions, frame rate, keyframes, and audio already meet YouTube’s ingest requirements. Do not assume compatibility: inspect the file and check YouTube’s stream health after connecting. If you transcode or use filters, test CPU use at the intended settings before relying on the VPS continuously.
2. Add the YouTube endpoint and key
In the command, replace the file path and endpoint placeholders with your own values. Put the RTMPS address and key exactly as YouTube provides them into the required URL form. Never publish or share the completed command if it contains your real key.

-f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_HOST/YOUR_APP/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'-re reads a file in real time rather than sending it as fast as the server can read it; -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. The H.264 and AAC options re-encode the media, so the VPS must have enough CPU for that workload. At 30 fps, -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds. For a stream-copy workflow, remove the encoding options and use stream copy only after confirming the source streams and keyframe pattern are suitable.
3. Test before leaving it unattended
Start the command in a test session and watch both the FFmpeg output and YouTube Live Control Room. Use representative motion and audio; confirm the picture, sound, bitrate, and stream-health messages before leaving the process running. YouTube’s LiveStreams API also exposes active, inactive, or error state, health status, and configuration issues such as low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio. Estimate bandwidth and select an Indian VPS
Continuous video uses substantial transfer. A useful payload estimate is bitrate × uptime. At 3 Mbps, streaming for a full 30-day month uses about 972 GB; at 4 Mbps, about 1.30 TB. These are decimal arithmetic estimates before protocol overhead, reconnects, or other server traffic—not provider quotes or guaranteed usage figures.
Check the provider’s India-region plan for included monthly transfer and what happens after the limit. For example, one Mumbai VPS provider documents plan-dependent monthly traffic limits and reduced speed after the allowance is consumed; its terms are specific to its plans and may change. Review the provider’s plan details before purchase.

- India-region availability and sustained outbound throughput, not just an advertised port speed.
- Included monthly traffic and post-cap speed or charges.
- CPU performance for the actual encode settings; stream copy and transcoding have different needs.
- Storage capacity and reliable reads for the source media.
- Terms that allow the intended continuous-stream workload.
There is no universally adequate CPU or RAM size established for every stream. Begin with a test at your intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, then observe CPU use and YouTube health before committing to a larger or longer-running setup.

Run FFmpeg under a service manager such as systemd so it can start at boot and restart after an unexpected exit. Configure a restart delay or backoff to avoid a rapid failure loop, and send logs to journald or rotated files. A restart is not guaranteed to resume seamlessly: YouTube may need to reacquire the feed, and a VPS network or ingest outage can still interrupt the broadcast.

Monitor both ends: check whether the FFmpeg process is alive and review its logs on the server, then inspect stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep a local copy of source media and service configuration so you can restore the VPS, but do not treat a backup as a substitute for monitoring.
Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a 24/7 broadcast arrangement in which a second broadcast can share the stream; when that second broadcast completes, the 24/7 broadcast continues. This describes API resource behavior, not an uptime guarantee, indefinite archiving, or eligibility for any particular channel. See the broadcast lifecycle documentation.
Troubleshoot common failures

Copyright, channel eligibility, and continuous playback
Before leaving a loop live, confirm that you have the rights needed for the video and audio and that your channel’s live-streaming access and account are in good standing. Continuous playback does not bypass YouTube’s content policies, copyright processes, or channel-specific limits. The cited technical documentation explains ingest and stream health; it does not decide whether a particular video is legally usable or whether an individual channel is eligible.
