Test upload speed near your streaming time, reserve capacity for variation and other devices, then choose a resolution and frame rate that fit. For many constrained connections, 720p30 is a more sensible starting point than 1080p60; confirm it with a test stream before going live.
Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
Use measured upload speed, not download speed, as your starting point. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing the stream before the event. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for stream bitrate; treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee. Allow additional room for household traffic and changes in connection quality. OBS explains its connection troubleshooting guidance, and YouTube lists its encoder settings and testing advice.
- Run an upload-speed test on the same connection and near the time you expect to stream.
- Use about 75% of the measured upload as an initial ceiling, then account for other devices and variation.
- Choose a YouTube resolution/frame-rate target at or below that budget. If none of the recommended targets fit, lower the resolution or use 30 fps.
- Make a private or unlisted test with movement and audio similar to your planned stream. Check OBS dropped frames and YouTube stream health before relying on the settings.
For example, if your stable measured upload is 6 Mbps, 75% gives an initial bitrate budget of 4.5 Mbps. That makes trying a 4 Mbps H.264 stream more plausible than targeting YouTube’s 8 Mbps recommendation for 720p30. This is an application of the guidance, not a guarantee that a 6 Mbps connection will sustain any particular stream.
YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not minimum internet-plan speeds or guarantees of stable streaming. Select the column matching the codec configured in OBS. YouTube also publishes lower minimums, but meeting a minimum does not promise good picture quality or a stable connection.

With limited upload, test 720p30 or 720p60 only if its matching codec bitrate fits your sustainable budget; otherwise reduce output resolution or frame rate. Choose 60 fps when motion detail matters, such as fast gameplay. A lecture, documentary discussion, slides, or talking-head stream may be acceptable at 30 fps. Do not default to 1080p60 when the connection cannot sustain its bitrate plus headroom.
Set the essential OBS streaming options
- Open Settings → Output → Streaming in OBS.
- Set Rate Control to CBR and enter the bitrate selected for your connection and target.
- Set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Use RTMP or RTMPS and a codec supported by the selected encoder. H.264 is a broadly compatible baseline. If your encoder offers H.265/HEVC or AV1, use the corresponding bitrate column above.
- Set audio to AAC or MP3; YouTube’s guidance specifies 128 kbps for stereo audio.
These are ingest settings: OBS sends the encoded stream to YouTube. A supported codec or a bitrate within YouTube’s table does not by itself establish that your local connection can carry the stream reliably.

Lower bitrate or resolution when OBS drops frames?
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or unable to keep up with the configured bitrate. Many dropped frames can disconnect a stream. First lower the video bitrate and test again. If the stream remains unstable, reduce resolution or frame rate so the picture target fits the connection instead of pushing a bitrate it cannot sustain.
- Bitrate is too high for the connection: lower it, then repeat a representative test.
- Wi-Fi is unstable: if practical, connect the streaming computer to the router with Ethernet. A wired connection may address local Wi-Fi instability, but cannot increase ISP upload capacity or fix upstream congestion.
- Connection remains unstable on Ethernet: OBS lists possible faults in the modem, router, network cable, network card, or another network device. If the cause is unclear, OBS advises contacting your ISP before replacing hardware.
- A different ingest route may help: try another server if one is available.
- Windows network options: OBS documents Network Optimizations and TCP pacing for Windows; these options are not available on every operating system.
- Short congestion periods: OBS documents Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment (Beta), which lowers bitrate during congestion instead of dropping frames. It can reduce image quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.
Speed-test results are a snapshot, not proof that the route to YouTube will remain clear throughout a broadcast. Use the representative test’s OBS dropped-frame behavior and YouTube stream health to decide whether a setting is reliable.

Why a lower setting can be the better stream
- Sustained upload: use the capacity left after household traffic and a margin for variation, not a best-case speed-test peak.
- Content motion: prioritize frame rate for fast movement; static visuals and speech often do not need 60 fps.
- Codec: YouTube’s recommended figures differ between H.264 and AV1/H.265.
- Viewer connections: maximum resolution is not automatically best; viewer buffering and stream latency also matter.
- Observed stability: a successful representative test is more useful than assuming a speed-test number guarantees the stream.
The bitrate table is YouTube’s published encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026; the 75% starting point is from OBS’s official connection troubleshooting guidance. These figures do not describe a typical Indian connection or establish that any one upload speed or ISP applies across India.
