What Bitrate Is Good for YouTube Live Streaming on a 20 Mbps Connection?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your connection delivers a steady 20 Mbps upload, start with 1080p30 at 10–12 Mbps when stream stability matters. YouTube’s official H.264 recommendation for 1080p30 is 14 Mbps, while its AV1/H.265 recommendation is 10 Mbps. The right setting depends on your codec, frame rate, and how much upload capacity remains available for fluctuations.

First, confirm that 20 Mbps is your upload speed

Streaming bitrate uses upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube recommends testing your upload bitrate and rehearsing with the audio and movement you expect during the actual stream. A speed test is only a snapshot; it does not guarantee that the connection will sustain the same rate throughout a broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.

If the measured 20 Mbps is stable, treat it as the available connection capacity—not a bitrate target. The stream itself needs room below that figure so ordinary network variation does not immediately cause trouble.

Choose a bitrate for your resolution, frame rate, and codec

YouTube’s live ingest table gives different recommendations for H.264 and AV1/H.265. These figures describe the video sent to YouTube, not an uploaded video file.

Resolution and frame rate AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p30 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps

YouTube also lists minimum bitrates, which are lower than its recommendations: at 1080p30, 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264; at 1080p60, 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264. A minimum is not the same as the recommended target for that resolution and frame rate. See YouTube’s encoder settings table.

1080p30: the safer general starting point

For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps. That leaves about 6 Mbps of nominal headroom on a steady 20 Mbps upload. If reliability matters more than matching the full H.264 recommendation, 10–12 Mbps is a cautious starting range; it is a practical choice, not a separate YouTube-prescribed setting. For AV1/H.265, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps.

1080p60: higher motion, less H.264 headroom

YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60, leaving about 3 Mbps of nominal headroom on a 20 Mbps upload. That is less forgiving if upload capacity varies. The AV1/H.265 recommendation is 12 Mbps, leaving more nominal room on the same connection.

1440p: check the codec recommendation carefully

For H.264 at 1440p30, YouTube recommends 21 Mbps—more than a 20 Mbps upload connection can provide. Do not try to sustain that setting on this connection; lower the resolution or frame rate instead. YouTube’s AV1/H.265 recommendation for 1440p30 is 15 Mbps. At 1440p60, the listed recommendations rise to 24 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 34 Mbps for H.264.

Set the encoder for YouTube Live

YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS as ingest protocols; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codecs; and frame rates up to 60 fps. For the encoder settings it specifies:

  • Bitrate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3, with 128 Kbps recommended for stereo.

Choose a bitrate from the table that matches the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually configure. The listed video bitrate does not include the separate audio bitrate.

Test the connection before relying on the setting

  1. Measure upload capacity. Use a speed test on the connection and at the location you plan to stream from; confirm that the result is upload speed, not download speed. YouTube says to run a speed test to test your upload bitrate.
  2. Rehearse the real show. Use the planned encoder settings and include representative audio and movement. A quiet desktop scene may not reveal the same issues as a broadcast with frequent motion.
  3. Watch stream health while live. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages during the rehearsal or broadcast. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen setting, reduce the bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than broadcast a live camera or production, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
