This is a historical U.S. release guide.
August 2024 was less about a single uniform “new movie” category than about a mix of one prominent Prime Video original and a large catalog refresh. The month’s best choices range from Paul Feig’s absurd survival comedy to Peter Jackson’s fantasy epics, Rian Johnson’s time-travel thriller, a Jane Austen adaptation, and a Hitchcock classic.
Key takeaways
- Jackpot! was the clearest new Prime Video original of August 2024, arriving on August 15 with Awkwafina and John Cena in a survival-action comedy directed by Paul Feig.
- The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies arrived on August 1, making August 2024 the strongest month for a Middle-earth marathon before or during The Rings of Power season 2.
- 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street formed the month’s best comedy double feature, while Looper offered the strongest serious science-fiction option.
- Adventureland, Emma., and Psycho provided character-driven, romantic, and classic-horror alternatives to the franchise titles.
- The August 2024 schedule was a historical U.S. release calendar, not a current guarantee of Prime-included streaming; availability, rent-or-buy terms, and Freevee status could vary by region and date.
What were the best new movies coming to Prime Video in August 2024?
The best new movies coming to Prime Video in August 2024 were led by Jackpot!, which premiered on August 15, and a major August 1 catalog influx that included both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. The strongest broader picks also included 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, Looper, Adventureland, Emma., and Psycho.
“Best” here is an editorial judgment rather than an Amazon ranking. The shortlist follows the contemporary selection from TheWrap’s August 2024 Prime Video guide, expanded with the full arrival context reported by TV Guide and Tom’s Guide.

Why was Jackpot! the main August 2024 Prime Video movie?
Jackpot! was the month’s clearest new-release centerpiece because the film was a Prime Video original rather than an older library addition. The action comedy arrived on August 15 and was directed by Paul Feig, with Awkwafina playing Katie Kim and John Cena playing Noel Cassidy.
The premise supplies the immediate hook: Katie wins a lottery in a near-future Los Angeles, but the winner must survive until sundown because anyone who kills her can legally claim the jackpot. Noel is a lottery-protection agent who agrees to help Katie in exchange for a share of the winnings.
Prime Video’s catalog listing identifies Jackpot! as a 2024, 1-hour-46-minute action comedy from Amazon Studios. The film belongs on this list because of its prominent original-release status, accessible high-concept premise, and Awkwafina–John Cena pairing—not because this article is claiming universal critical acclaim.
For the historical release context, readers can watch Jackpot! on Prime Video through the current destination supplied by the site’s viewing partner. The August 15 premiere date is historical, so the present-day watch option should be checked rather than assumed.

How did the Middle-earth movies change Prime Video’s August lineup?
The August 1 arrival of all three Lord of the Rings theatrical films and all three Hobbit films turned the month into Prime Video’s best large-scale fantasy marathon opportunity. The timing also made the films a natural revisit for viewers preparing for the return of The Rings of Power.
The recommended viewing order for a first-time six-film marathon is release order: start with The Fellowship of the Ring, continue with The Two Towers and The Return of the King, then watch An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies. Viewers who prefer the story’s internal chronology can begin with The Hobbit trilogy, but the original trilogy is the stronger editorial starting point for most audiences.
| Middle-earth set | Films | Best viewing use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Lord of the Rings | The Fellowship of the Ring; The Two Towers; The Return of the King | Start here for the most broadly recommended marathon | Prime Video’s catalog can show standard and extended-edition purchase options, and exact watch terms can vary. |
| The Hobbit | An Unexpected Journey; The Desolation of Smaug; The Battle of the Five Armies | Continue with a longer Middle-earth binge | The trilogy’s reception is more mixed than that of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. |
Prime Video’s catalog page for The Fellowship of the Ring extended edition identifies Peter Jackson as director and lists Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, and Sean Astin among the cast. The page also demonstrates why readers should check the exact edition and transaction type in their own region.

Prefer a permanent collection instead of relying on changing streaming rights? A The Lord of the Rings trilogy Blu-ray or other physical Middle-earth collection is a natural alternative. Edition, price, seller, stock, and regional compatibility should be verified on the current product listing before publication or purchase.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Are 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street worth watching together?
21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street are best treated as a paired comedy recommendation because the sequel deliberately extends and mocks the conventions of the first film and of sequel-making itself.
Both films were directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and arrived on August 1. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum play police officers sent undercover: first at a high school, then at a college. Watching the films back to back makes the repeated undercover setup and the escalating self-parody part of the appeal.
Choose the double feature when the priority is energetic, accessible comedy rather than a new Prime Video original. The two films also provide a useful change of pace between longer fantasy installments.
What is the best serious science-fiction choice?
Looper is the strongest serious, idea-driven genre choice in the August 2024 lineup. Rian Johnson’s 2012 thriller follows Joe, a criminal “looper” working in 2044, after Joe is forced to confront his older self.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the younger Joe, Bruce Willis plays the older Joe, and Emily Blunt is also part of the cast. The central appeal is the collision between two versions of one character and the moral consequences that follow, not time travel as spectacle alone.
Looper works especially well after the broad comedy of Jackpot! or the franchise scale of Middle-earth. The film asks viewers to follow its rules and ethical tensions, making it the pick for a more focused evening.

Which August movie is best for a quieter character drama?
Adventureland is the quietly excellent alternative for viewers who want a character-driven coming-of-age story instead of a franchise movie or action comedy.
Greg Mottola’s 2009 dramedy follows Jesse Eisenberg’s recent college graduate after he takes a job at a theme park. The job leads to a complicated relationship with a co-worker played by Kristen Stewart, while Ryan Reynolds, Bill Hader, and Kristen Wiig contribute to the ensemble.
The film’s wistful, indie-style tone makes it a good choice for viewers who prefer awkward relationships, uncertain adulthood, and an ensemble setting over large-scale spectacle.
Why should romance viewers choose Emma.?
Emma. is the August pick for romance, literary adaptation, and costume-drama audiences because Autumn de Wilde’s 2020 Jane Austen adaptation combines period styling with bright visual design and modern comic energy.
Anya Taylor-Joy plays Emma Woodhouse, with Johnny Flynn, Mia Goth, Josh O’Connor, Bill Nighy, and Callum Turner in supporting roles. The film’s carefully designed settings and costumes are as central to its appeal as the matchmaking plot and ensemble comedy.
Viewers who want a lighter period film can choose Emma. after Adventureland; viewers seeking the most expansive fantasy experience should choose one of the Middle-earth trilogies instead.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Janet Leigh, Anthony Perkins, and Vera Miles lead the cast. The film is a natural early-Spooky-Season choice and a useful counterpoint to the newer, more comic titles in the August schedule.
Prime Video’s catalog page for Psycho confirms the film’s catalog presence and shows that rental, purchase, and physical-format options can appear differently across regional views. The August 1 historical arrival should not be read as a promise that Psycho remains included with Prime in every market.
Collectors can also consider a Psycho Blu-ray or DVD, but this is a narrower physical-media opportunity than the Middle-earth collection and should not be treated as a current price or availability claim.

What other movies arrived on Prime Video or Freevee in August 2024?
The full U.S. August 2024 schedule was much larger than the editorial shortlist. TV Guide’s calendar included American Graffiti, Annie, Atomic Blonde, Born on the Fourth of July, Cinema Paradiso, Dante’s Peak, Death Becomes Her, Eastern Promises, Fargo, Face/Off, Ghost, Good Boys, Green Zone, Howard the Duck, Jacob’s Ladder, Pulp Fiction, Road to Perdition, Ronin, Scarface, Sense and Sensibility, Stardust, The Naked Gun, The Whale, and The Warriors, among many other titles.
The phrase “coming to Prime Video” requires care. The August schedule could include Prime-included streaming, Freevee viewing with ads, or titles offered through Amazon’s broader video catalog for rent or purchase. A title’s presence in a contemporary release calendar did not guarantee no-extra-charge Prime access for every U.S. subscriber, and regional catalogs could differ.
What should viewers know about the August 2024 release dates?
The release dates in this guide refer to the U.S. Prime Video and Freevee schedule published for August 2024: August 1 for the major catalog additions and August 15 for Jackpot!. The dates are historical and should not be presented as current August 2026 availability.
Amazon catalog pages can display different watch, rental, purchase, or channel options according to territory, account, edition, and the date accessed. Check the current Prime Video listing before promising that a film is included with a subscription. The release-calendar context is documented in the contemporary TV Guide schedule and Tom’s Guide’s August guide.
