The LG UBK90 is the best LG Blu-ray player to seek out if you want 4K Ultra HD discs, Dolby Vision, and flexible connections to a home theater receiver. The catch: LG USA lists it as discontinued. The HDR10-only UBK80 is a cheaper fallback, but it is also an older model. Treat either as a used or remaining-stock purchase, and compare its condition and price with current Panasonic and Sony players before buying.
For the UBK90, the key advantage is not a promise of better-looking picture or sound than every rival; it is a useful combination of Dolby Vision, two HDMI outputs, and broad disc-format support. The right choice depends on your television, receiver, collection, and the specific unit you can find.

LG USA marks the UBK90 as discontinued and directs shoppers to check local retailers for availability. The UBK80 and UP870 are also legacy designs, so stock, warranty, and condition vary. Best overall LG player: LG UBK90
The UBK90 is the strongest LG option for a 4K disc collection. It plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray as well as standard Blu-ray, DVD, and CD, and LG’s published specification sheet lists USB playback and 4K upscaling. For HDR discs, it supports both HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Dolby Vision playback requires a compatible television and an HDMI signal path that can carry it; a Dolby Vision disc by itself is not enough.

Its two HDMI outputs are especially useful in a theater with an older receiver. Send video from the main output directly to a compatible TV and audio from the second, audio-only output to a receiver or processor that cannot pass 4K HDR video. With a modern receiver that handles your TV’s 4K HDR formats, one HDMI connection may be simpler. The UBK90 also provides Ethernet, optical digital audio, and built-in Wi-Fi.
LG lists Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, and other audio formats. That means the player can deliver compatible disc audio, not that every setup will produce Atmos. The disc must include an Atmos track, the player must be connected and configured appropriately, and the receiver or soundbar must support Atmos. For lossless or object-based formats, HDMI is generally the connection to prioritize; optical audio has less bandwidth and cannot carry every such format in full.
LG’s specification sheet lists Netflix, YouTube, and 4K Netflix streaming. Because this is an older discontinued platform, those listings should not be taken as a guarantee that each app still works in every region in 2026. Buy the UBK90 for discs and connection flexibility, not as a long-term streaming hub. A current TV or separate streaming device is generally the safer choice for apps.

Buy the UBK90 if you specifically want an LG player, have a Dolby Vision TV, need dual HDMI to work around an older receiver, or want one machine for several disc formats—and can find a tested unit at a sensible price. It is a poor value if it costs close to a current alternative, comes without a return option, or is being sold mainly on the promise of built-in streaming.
Best budget LG player: LG UBK80
The UBK80 plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, DVD, and CD. It supports HDR10, 4K upscaling, USB playback, Ethernet, and the listed Dolby and DTS audio formats, including Dolby Atmos and Dolby TrueHD. Unlike the UBK90, it does not support Dolby Vision, has one HDMI output, and has no built-in Wi-Fi listed by LG.
That makes it a reasonable legacy option only when HDR10 meets your needs and the price is meaningfully lower than a Dolby Vision-capable player. It can suit a 4K TV that supports HDR10 but not Dolby Vision, or a buyer who mainly wants physical-disc playback and already has a separate streaming solution. If you have a Dolby Vision display and intend to use Dolby Vision discs, the UBK80 is the wrong LG model to choose.

Choose the UBK90 for Dolby Vision or a split video-and-audio connection to an older receiver. Choose the UBK80 only if HDR10 is sufficient and its lower price justifies giving up those features. Neither model’s upscaling turns a DVD or standard Blu-ray into native 4K: it scales a lower-resolution source for a 4K output. Your TV or receiver may do as well or better, so compare the results in your own setup rather than assuming the player’s scaler is superior.

What about the LG UP870?
The UP870 is an older 4K player with HDR10, 4K upscaling, USB playback, Ethernet, and one HDMI output. LG’s specification sheet does not list Dolby Vision. Consider it only if you find an inexpensive, working unit for a specific setup; it is not the first choice for a new 4K home theater purchase.
Connect the player to match your system
- For a modern TV and receiver: Connect the player to the receiver, then the receiver to the TV, provided both receiver and HDMI path pass the video formats you want, including 4K HDR and Dolby Vision where applicable.
- For an older receiver that cannot pass 4K HDR: On the UBK90, connect its main HDMI output to the TV for video and its audio-only HDMI output to the receiver. The UBK80’s single HDMI output does not offer this workaround.
- For a Dolby Vision problem: Confirm that the TV supports Dolby Vision, the disc includes it, the player’s HDR settings are appropriate, and the TV input and HDMI chain support the format. Try connecting the player directly to the TV. If that works but routing through the receiver does not, the receiver or another link in the chain is likely the limitation.
- For Atmos: Select the Atmos soundtrack in the disc’s audio menu, connect by HDMI, use an appropriate bitstream output setting, and confirm that the receiver or soundbar supports Atmos. Check the receiver’s display or information screen for the format it is receiving.
Exact menu names can differ by firmware, so consult the manual for the unit rather than relying on instructions written for another version. Also remember that a Dolby Vision-compatible TV does not guarantee Dolby Vision playback through an incompatible receiver, switch, or HDMI path.

Disc, USB, and region compatibility
The UBK90’s published specifications list several recordable disc types and USB formats, including common video, audio, and image formats such as MKV, MP4, MOV, MP3, FLAC, and JPEG. A listed container or file extension is not a guarantee that every codec, bitrate, subtitle, or file structure inside it will play. USB formatting and disc authoring can matter, too; a file that works on a computer may fail on the player.
Do not assume an ordinary U.S. retail UBK90 is region-free. Blu-ray, DVD, and UHD Blu-ray have different region and compatibility rules, and imported or modified units may differ from standard regional models. Verify the exact model suffix, disc-region claims, electrical compatibility, warranty, and update support with the seller. Modified “region-free” players can carry warranty and firmware-update trade-offs.

- The tray opens and closes smoothly, and the remote is included and functional.
- The player recognizes and plays a 4K UHD disc, a standard Blu-ray, a DVD, and a CD if those formats matter to you.
- Discs load reliably, play without freezing, and navigate chapters properly. Test more than one disc before blaming the player for a single failure.
- Both HDMI outputs work on a UBK90, and the picture remains stable at the resolution and HDR format your system uses.
- Ethernet or Wi-Fi works if you need network features. Do not count on an older phone remote app or streaming service being supported indefinitely.
- There is no excessive fan noise, vibration, or evidence of overheating, and the seller explains the firmware and included accessories.
If a 4K disc freezes, inspect and clean the disc, try other discs and formats, and check that the player has ventilation. If only one disc fails, it may be damaged or poorly authored. If multiple formats fail, the aging optical drive may be at fault. For streaming-app problems, use a current external streamer rather than treating app access as a reason to keep or buy the player.
When a Panasonic or Sony makes more sense
If you do not need LG branding, compare the UBK90’s used price with current alternatives. Panasonic’s official store lists the DP-UB450 as a 4K Blu-ray player with Dolby Vision and hi-res audio. Panasonic also lists the DP-UB820 in its Blu-ray/DVD collection for buyers considering a more premium model. Check each model’s current specifications, stock, warranty, and price before deciding; the product pages do not establish a fixed price here.
Sony maintains an official page for the UBP-X800M2, which lists built-in streaming services including Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Prime Video, subject to region and app availability. Check Sony’s current specifications for the exact HDR and audio behavior you need. In general, current Panasonic or Sony availability may be preferable if warranty and ongoing support matter more than keeping the brand LG.
